I have a 1996 RMX 250 I bought new in 99 rode it 3 times then stored it for 20 years. Just replace all the seals and bearings put a fmf pipe on it and a lectron carb, wow it runs great. In 2023 I bet it still has under 12 hours on it and it looks new. I love the RMX. It was one of the best woods bikes for the PNW area. It brought joy to my heart to see your restored RMX.

The RMX 250 is one of the greatest enduro bikes of all time. I wish Suzuki still made them along with the RM models. The RMX went head to head with the KTM EXC models for the 250 enduro bike of the year for several years. I would love to have one. Any year really from 89 to 98 they're all basically the same with minor upgrades and changes. I think the 89 or 90 model had a rev limiter and an exhaust system that really chocked the power down. It was an easy fix to get it to where it would perform better.

@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA Жыл бұрын
I had this 96 250 RMX and right after a 97 KX250. The RMX has a shorter wheel base than the MX bikes, and a steep head angle. The RMX was great in the woods, (and the forks were super supple), but was scary nervous on a fast bumpy natural MX track. I had quite a few MX bikes that I also rode woods with. But I never had a bike that was so "one sided".
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA Жыл бұрын
I had one for a year. Great trail and tight trail bike. Smooth motor. Very supple forks that would soak up anything on the trail and never seemed to deflect off a weird angle tree root. But on a faster natural bumpy MX practice track, with the shorter wheel base and steep head tube, it was scary unstable/squirrely at speed. I am sure the forks are too soft for a MX track, but they were amazing, (leading the rest of the bike by a small margin), in the woods. Great woods bike. Terrible for the faster MX track. I never had a bike that was so "one sided".

Nice work! I think this is the bike we were talking about at Wishes on Wheels when we met. Definitely a labor of love. I'm currently rebuilding a 1990 rmx250 but it'll be a while before it's done. Definitely not cost effective. Was stoked when you mentioned Ken O'Conner. I'm supposed to sending him my jug to be re-plated, then I'm gonna have him rebuild the motor. Just sourcing parts is ridiculously hard. I ended up getting lucky and sourced 1989 rm250 exhaust valves that fortunately cross referenced to my motor, except no 3 piece grenade waiting to happen. So hopefully I won't ever have the same problem as before with the valves wearing out. Just waiting for new connecting rod, piston, and carb rebuild kit and throttle cable. Love the channel, I watch every day! Any chance you can point me in the direction for NOS parts or any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also...6k for that rebuild seems totally worth it and I'd be completely satisfied and justified if I end up around the same numbers

Had same year and model and hated it on the trails. It was an alright bike, with better suspension than you'd think by looking at the old fork guards. Best wheeling 2 stroke i ever owned - almost like a 4 stroke. could go from a dead stop to top gear no problem on one wheel. The down side was the motor and the gearing were just never where i needed them to be. I could've spent more time swapping sprockets but man after a few different sizes it just wasn't for me. Alot of hills i'd hit in 2nd on a CR or 3rd on a standard RM were just somewhere in the middle. Felt like i was always either hitting the limiter or bogging in 3rd. I've never ridden a bike where i would go from 3 to 2 to 3 to 2 so often on climbs. The powerband just didn't hit a low enough speed to be useful like a honda or savagely enough like an rm. Just an overall bleh bike for me. Just wasn't the well round peppy package the kdx was at the end of the day. Had way better luck with durability than a base rm, but today just as much back then, when suzuki shit broke - it broke big. and parts were always harder to find and more expensive than honda in my region.

I had a rm250 and rmx250 at the same time , loved the rmx it was so similar to the rm just had longer legs it would cruise on the road to ride to the trails just fine smooth like or nearly like a road bike . Then once on the trail crack it open and it was just like the rm . If anything I was faster on the rmx . But of course rm was better on motocross track . The x is really a 2stroke that did it all 😀👍👍👍
