Once upon a time working people voted Labour believing that the Tories were for posh people. Nowadays the working people aren't posh enough for Labour. We embarrass them. We're looked down on. I worked in the civil service with Ministers, Jack Straw was Home Secretary and Kate Hoey was a Minister at the time too. She is such a lovely lady, and used to meet a Frank Field MP regularly for lunch and go to the staff canteen, no airs or graces. Two fine conviction Labour Party members who worked for the greater good and need. I’m old school and remember when Labour were the party full of ‘conviction’ MPs. Remember a few months ago it was announced that TATA were shutting down furnaces in Port Talbot meaning almost 3000 would lose their jobs. Labour of years ago would have kicked off big time at TATA & the government not a word of condemnation from Starmer. I expect he was celebrating a win for net zero. Reform is the pre-1992 Labour party in many respects. It was at about that stage that Labour decided that supporting the poor gained them few votes and little money. So they ditched them and I'm not really sure what or who Labour now represents apart from a trendy metropolitan middle class who couldn't give a toss for the poor.

In many parts of our country you can easily be asked to pay way over a thousand pounds a month in rents. If you are on benefits your rent is paid for you. How can anyone afford to take a low paid job in fields such as care when their monthly take home would barely cover the rent. This government’s answer is to recruit cheap labour care workers from sub Saharan Africa who bring their dependents with them and require housing which again increases the shortage of accommodation further pushing up the cost of housing. £20 thousand tax threshold would help as would stopping recruiting workers and their families from abroad which would encourage care providers to make their care workers wages more attractive to new recruits.
