It's remarkable how apparently clueless the NS commentators are about politics in the EU. Twice now I've heard Freddie and Andrew claiming the election in the Netherlands as some kind of disaster/cultural shift. The EU project relies on more than just one or two nations to work. It is still very much steering it's own course (the direction of which is of course questionable, but on its own terms.) Last week (iirc) they said it made them thankful for FPtP. What a remarkably short sighted thing to say. It's well known that Wilders will have to jettison many of his policies in order to form a government and throughout his term will be forced to rely on more moderate colleagues to govern. In countries with a form of PR the right can be *part* of a government, but at least they don't get in by the back door and radicalise an entire ostensibly mainstream party, as has happened in the UK and US. I live in Sweden where the Sweden Democrats have a large influence over the government and all it has done has made the government unpopular. Right populism is certainly a huge issue, but it is clear that of the two electoral systems, FpTP and PR, it is PR that is best able to weather the vicissitudes of public opinion and maintain some semblance of political balance.

The biggest problem is that a lot of Labour's "national revival", namely any of it that might involve needing money, is going to be throttled by that "fiscal discipline", is it? Pretty sure that realistically only leaves worker's rights teform (provided nothing gets watered down) and planning reform to credibly look forward to. The rest is not going to get sufficient financial backing to have a serious impact, and a lot rely on market conditions and growth being favourable to succeed. It's putting the carriage before the horses.

Social Care Reform has to be the number 1 priority of a Labour Government. Increasing care worker pay to the same levels for NHS equivalents if not more, £13 an hour at least. Not nationalising the market but having much greater control over it, what services are commissioned and where, as it’s a free for all at the moment. Reforming the charging policy for service users; not making it free but implementing what they do in Wales with a weekly cap of £100 for home care and respite care, if you have savings or capital not including your home less than £24000, you pay nothing. I’d also go further and have a cap of £600 a week for residential and nursing care and when you get assets of less than £100,000 you don’t pay anything.

NHS is in desparate need of reform. That is not to say privatisation. But there are state healthcare systems with a public/private partnership in Europe that are better resourced, offer better care, much better organised and do not result in loss of universal care or crippling charges like in the US. UK has to first recognise that the NHS is not the “envy of the world” and needs to modernise.

Personally I find a wealth tax difficult because those who have existing assets inherited support a whole class system of inherited privilege which is unjustifiable in a democracy or at all. Everyone should start off equal. However those who put more in or are more lucky or are Elan Musk not only benefit themselves but society. Those are the real aristocrats. They benefit themselves and everyone else. So just for a start those who are inherited privileged should be cut down to size by a wealth tax. Starting with bringing the royal family into the same tax situation as everyone else. Starting with stopping tax privileges which only the very rich can afford to buy. You do not even have to be a socialist to think we should all start off more equal.

Hi a number of points. All EU countries elect members to the EU Parliament. The EU Council is made up of the heads of government of all the member states. And the commission is made up of nominees from the member states, all of whom are voted on by the elected Parliament. In the UK we have a hereditary head of state, and our PM was voted in by no one, not even his own party. The second chamber is composed of placemen, tory donors, people whe believe in a particular fairy story and some people who inherit their titles. No democracy is perfect, but the EU is far more democratic than the UK. Hope this helps. Ken @davidhorton188

We're in a very odd situation if some of the positive aspects of the Labour Party's possible future policies are to do with job security and pay (things that you might expect to be achieved through collective bargaining, ie. through unions) when the Labour leadership sanctioned any of its own MPs who turned up on picket lines during the rail strikes, nurses strikes, etc. So, it isn't planning to return power to the workers via unions (its traditional base), but via act of parliament, leaving workers atomized and therefore necessarily weaker as a result. I don't see that as a positive.

I'm all for fair workers rights......a fair day's work for a fair day's money. However, be careful what you wish for. Somebody has to pay for all of this .....small businesses can't. Manufacturing can't. I know civil servants, local government and professionals people will lap up more employment rights ,.......four day week anyone.? They won't have to pay for it! I work as a bricklayer.....we have no rights .....forced self employment, or zero hour contracts ( as middle class people call it ) no one has ever defended us..... particularly the middle class left ( we don't tick the politically correct boxes). Construction workers should be in a PAYE system, and have basic rights. Some sick pay,a basic pension , some holiday pay, and some wet time . ( I guarantee this will not happen under labour). However, I do understand why construction companies would be scared of modern workers rights. Diversity quotas, paternity leave ect.....it would stop productivity dead. And productivity is what is missing right across Britain. I'm also against new towns. Harlow, Stevenage and Milton Keynes are ugly characterless mass housing estates. The original garden suburbs ,were far better. People like character . The best way to build , without destroying our countryside and much needed farm land ; is to go back to medium sized local building companies. These used to build local houses with lots of PAYE trades and apprentices. If you genuinely build for local people, each town and village could take added houses without destroying the surrounding countryside.

The Western intellectual consensus has basically changed. We're moving on from Neo-Liberalism. So the difference between Labour and Tories will in the medium term be superstructural, wedge, 'culture' issues, whilst the core economic structure and agenda will be almost the same, because that stuff is not really up for choice by voters, despite the rhetoric of Democracy. The New Washington Consensus is here, for want of a better term, which is on the whole a good thing.

This is the friggin Twilight Zone. Anybody merely contemplating a suggestion that either entrenched main party has the country's interests at heart has zero understanding of the policies enacted by both sides of the Uniparty and the BoE that have robbed the nation of it's wealth and spending power. It will continue this way until it's obvious that our greatest enemy is internal and is the group that insists in inflationary fiscal policy, inflationary energy policy, monetary policy designed to rob workers of spending power via currency debasement (aka counterfeit) and ever-higher income tax on a fast-shrinking private sector to feed the beast. Either party will be busy telling everyone to tighten their belts with a central bank scoffing at people wanting pay rises to keep up with a devaluing currency (a situation the central bank and government create together) all the while protecting their own inflation-linked pensions and spending other people's money like drunken sailors. I would like to see labour spend most of the budget designing and building a giant computer that we the public can then program with our beliefs, philosophies, values and aspirations. This computer can then run all government departments for the next 100 years, then a new generation can modify it if they choose to if it programming no longer reflects them or if it has started too many wars. I really don’t see any other option for politics in this country.

The immigration thing is not high up on the list of priorities of the electorate, it ranks only 7th on most polls. The only polls that list it higher are the polls which specifically exclude the main priorities of, cost of living, housing, the economy, energy prices etc, in other words, polls that the Tory government and media promote.

What Marr fails to understand is that Zoe and Freddie are the future, not him, so their opinions on the UK’s place with the EU have more weight within their generation more than Andrew’s. It’s the retirement age generation who got us into this mess!

Many, including me, will NOT vote for Labour for at least a decade because of Starmer's stance on the Israel-Palestinian war.
@wolfen210959
@wolfen210959 9 ай бұрын
Why should the stance of any UK politician concern you in regards to Israel? The UK has zero influence there, so it does not matter what any UK poliician thinks or declares or supports, as it will make no difference. The only countries that have any influence in the Israel/Hamas war are the US and Iran, and neither has had any success in persuading Israel and Hamas to stop. The UK ceased to have any influence around the world, many decades ago, and in Europe that happened more recently with the advent of Brexit.
