Far as I understand, the fire on the bottom of the booster was just a vent that was probably super hot and still had some flammable material in it.

methane
@sucof977Ай бұрын
It's coming from the booster QD umbilicals. You could see the exact same vent on flight 4 as well. I think they are just dumping methane to lower the chances of an explosion when safing.
@S1nwarАй бұрын
using the QD is quiet the efficient solution i qould say
@realEpicGoldАй бұрын
They were dumping methane, and it caught fire by the engine flames. So it's literally evaporating methane.

"Blue Origin's going to launch a rocket" Laughed out loud at that one..
@mattmcc72Ай бұрын
It was a nice attempt at stealing the headlines, "While SpaceX fails, Blue Origin succeeds" or something like that would have been the headline on the WSJ the next morning without question. But I honestly have to ask, did the "cock rocket" actually launch? I don't know? It's now a story that has been lost to the history of being second place.

The swing was 100% intentional and was designed to enter the catch area that way.

just fyi: the swing at the end was completly intentional to assure that the booster would not hit the tower unless its absolutly certain that it is on a catch trajectory. if anything went wrong it would hit the ground infront
@wtf7851Ай бұрын
They left a lot of tiles off the ship on purpose because they wanted to test the actual strength of the ship itself and how many tiles could be missing before it's fatal and on the wings they Stainless steel because I believe they were testing the sheet metal itself
@NcyphenАй бұрын
Some of the missing tiles had an ablative coating instead, as they wanted to test out the durability of the ablative coating they plan to put on all Starship vessels as a backup heatshield in the future.

I would love to see the reaction of both the chinese and russian space program to this
@NcyphenАй бұрын
Russia . . . not so much. The current man in charge of Russia's space program has been publicly anti-space. As such, we won't see much innovation from Russia in space for probably decades to come. China, on the other hand . . . it would not surprise me if they people trying to work out where the Starship "landed" and boats ready to dredge it from the ocean floor.
@SynFuZeАй бұрын
They purposefully removed tiles to test the ablative layer, and to put instruments.

Probably warping from rapid heating.
@NcyphenАй бұрын
I assume the big explosion at the end wasn't Starship having a chaotic failure, but rather SpaceX initiating the self-destruct in order to protect their trade secrets,. in case anyone were able to recover the vessel from the ocean floor.
