He wrote an article in the newspaper that this was indeed about his father, and growing up with him completely absent. I agree, there are some lyrics that definitely have a more intimate connotation, but he wanted it to be about a family, so that does include his mom, who had to grow up without the father figure. He had eight siblings and his mom had to raise them alone. It’s one of the most excruciating and beautiful songs, don’t you think?
