Emerging evidence and clinical experience indicate that nutritional ketosis from a ketogenic diet can be an effective treatment for many psychiatric conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and more. But before starting a keto diet to treat mental illness, there are a number of labs you should consider checking and following to help ensure safety and efficacy. In this video, we review these labs, when and how often to consider checking them, and what you may expect to change. This is a great resource to watch and share with your healthcare practitioner as you embark on your ketogenic journey.
If you are interested in ordering your own labs, you can easily order them online through Own Your Labs. Own Your Labs give you the power to privately order blood work through Labcorp. Visit the link below to get started:

Low carb diet for 1.75 years lost 40 lbs reversed metabolic syndrome and ended up with extreme anxiety and in the ER twice from panic attacks, something i had never experienced before. Addressed electrolytes and still could not get over the anxiety. The second ER visit i was scribed hydroxyzine which is a antihystamine that helped but did not eliminate the anxiety. At roughly the 1.75 year mark i went to paleo adding back root vegrtables and fruit and the anxiety went away. Been over a month now and feel normal again. So obviously low carb diets are not for everyone.

My LDL went up considerably on Keto, enough that my doc wanted me on statins. I asked for CAC, which showed ZERO plaque. Hence, I believe in "hyperresponder" theory.

Good for you for getting a CAC!

Zero CAC doesn’t mean zero plaque. It just means zero calcified plaque. You could still have uncalcified soft plaque.

@@DK-pr9ny Yeah. I think it's very difficult to judge the scores for something that takes years to develop/to calcify. I'm currently on the standpoint that you need to get a score every year and that the progression should be lower than the average progression (10% per year?), but only several years after a life style change. Not 6 months later.

You mentioned that low carnitine can make it difficult for someone to get into ketosis. It would be awesome if you all could do a video on things that can make it difficult for some people to get into ketosis. Or difficult to get their ketones into the 1.5-2.5 range. Just a suggestion. Thanks for the great content you all do!

I would like to see a video like that. After removing bupropion (metabolized in the liver) i still have problems reaching anything higher than 0.6 easily. (nocarb)

I had trouble getting into ketosis even eating a pretty high fat low carb diet and intermittent fasting. I started adding a tablespoon of MCT oil to my coffee in the morning and it dramatically increased my ketone levels, putting me strongly in ketosis all day.

I participated in the Lean Mass Hyper Responder study and knew that carnitine was in the metabolic pathway for ketones, so I would try to eat some red meat daily. My ketones averaged 0.8 over the entire year study and they would be highest when I would eat a lot of fat (about 2.1 was my highest on a high fat day). However, when I started on 1 gram carnitine supplements, I measured my highest ketones at 3.1

The fact that SGLT2 inhibitors are shown to be beneficial for cardio protection, while changing the metabolic parameters in parallel to the ketogenic diet does is reassuring. it also causes ketosis. SGLT2 inhibitors raise LDL!

0:06: 📚 Metabolic Mind is an educational resource that explores the connection between metabolic and mental health and metabolic therapies, such as nutritional ketosis, as psychiatric therapies. 3:35: 💊 Nutritional ketosis can lower medication levels, but a decrease in level does not always mean the medication is less effective. 6:24: 🔬 Low vitamin D and B12 levels can be associated with psychiatric symptoms, and starting nutritional ketosis may affect lipid levels. 9:46: 🩺 Testing for insulin levels and A1C is important to interpret changes in glucose and determine metabolic health. 12:56: 🔬 The video discusses LDL cholesterol and the subset of people who experience a dramatic rise in their LDL concentration. Hi! Thanks for this great inf. I think that another important point to consider is that you *CAN NOT* go in Ketosis weekly on & off, on & off, on & off.... Why????? Because your body needs time, maybe 1 or 2 months to change from glucose to Ketosis/fat burning. So your LDL only will go down if you stay for a long, long time in Ketosis (burn fat) Important: ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ *CAN NOT COMBINE* a fat diet (Keto) with an american stile eating habits/ high carbs diet. ↪Mixing both diets will bring you many health's problems = heart problems, high cholesterol, etc..... A Keto diet will bring you lots of good health to your body *"ONLY"* if you do it correctly. Important always to consult your Dr. 👍👍👍

Would the aforementioned lab markers increase (ie LDL, Uric Acid) eating predominantly monounsaturated fats? (ie olive oil, nuts/seeds, avocado, chocolate etc)
@metabolicmind

LDL still can increase, although it certainly doesn't in most people. Uric acid is even less commonly elevated.

Hello, i have two questions on this topic: 1) I have heard that Seroquel (Quetiapine) can make it harder to get and stay into ketosis, because of affecting insulin levels. Are there some biomarkers which can tell me if this is true for me and does it affect every person on keto taking this exact medication or only those who are insulin resistance? 2) Does the medication only make it harder to get into ketosis or also to stay into? - I really cannot believe medical keto won‘t work because of this… I really hope for an answer, thank you!

Thank you for your questions. For this, we defer to an article Dr. Georgia Ede wrote for Psychology Today that will hopefully help answer your questions. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/diagnosis-diet/201803/ketogenic-diets-and-psychiatric-medications

@@metabolicmind Hi and thank you for the Link. In the article it only says that it can increase insulin levels which can make it harder to produce Ketones. But are there some biomarkers or indicaters which can tell me if this is true for me ? Hope you can give me an answer on this ? :)
