This is an extended version of the Labyrinth ballroom scene. It contains the studio music track mixed into the original movie audio.
My focus was mainly on the video content.
In order to enhance the fantasy theme of the ballroom sequence, I smoothed out the skin tones and increased the blue shades to provide a much cooler, more dream-like quality to the scene. I also sharpened the highlights (most notably in Bowie's hair and costume) because the film seemed a little flat. (Perhaps the Blu-ray version has better color tones to work with.)
I arranged the lead-in sequence to begin with Sarah after she has taken a bite, and then standing as if looking in the direction of Jareth's castle. I also flopped the direction of the floating bubbles so that the movement of the scene would match the direction of the bubble Sarah was trapped in as she drifted away.
The studio track plays beyond the "shattered bubble" scene, allowing the video to play to a better conclusion rather than the typical abrupt ending. I enjoy the song and the scene and hoped to make a better overall video experience for Labyrinth Lovers.
0:01 Sarah transfixed
0:12 Labyrinth ballroom scene
0:15 Sarah arrives
0:29 Into the bubble
0:40 Jareth enters scene
2:15 The Labyrinth Waltz
3:08 Sarah escapes
3:26 Out of the bubble

Can anyone tell me who/what the man in the strange bone colored mask is supposed to be or represent? He appears repetitively throughout the ball scene, and for thirty years, I've wondered who he was. I named my daughter "Sarah" after this movie - had the entire thing memorized after the second time I watched it and can recite it even now, all these years later, including sound effects. I cried when Bowie died (and still do sometimes), I have the board games, the figures, the jewelry, and so on and so on. But this remains a mystery to me. I have yet to meet someone who can tell me who that man in the bone colored mask is. He first makes an appearance at second 28 here and looks at the camera, then again at 1:47 for just a flash of an instant. Then at 2:02, where he's peering into a hand held mirror with his dance partner and is wearing a different hat. At 2:40, he's spinning with the original hat and a new dance partner and looks directly at the camera. At 2:48, he is in the background, a "stationary" follower of the camera, walking behind the others to remain in the center of the screen as the rest of the world spins. At 2:56, he's right there in her face and frightening. As she breaks away from Jareth and pushes through the crowd at 3:11, you see him again, right there beside her and watching her. If you slow it down and stop it at 3:16, he's dead center, a non-blurry mask amidst a bunch of blurry ones. Who is this man/goblin/masked creature? He's clearly more important than the others. On another note - did anyone else notice the small floating/flying person to Sarah's left (our right) at 3:33 when she's finally falling after having shattered the crystal ball? Also… how many times do you see Jareth's face in the architecture throughout the movie? I seem to notice him in a new location every single time I watch it - and I've seen it so, so many times.

I believe it represents his father (mother dancing with him sometimes in the orange puffy hair) in the coronation comics they talks about his background story and at the end they mention how his parents were present during the ballroom scene.

To those concerned about the age difference...keep something in mind here. Her character was meant to be 16 in the movie and His was an immortal fae king. It's essentially a modern romanticized a portrayal of a real Gaelic legend about the Fae stealing babies/young children or luring pretty young maids into their world.

@jjohnsengraciesmom
@jjohnsengraciesmom 6 жыл бұрын
DaemonicWolf if it's blow-dried and curled, wither with rollers or curling iron, tight curls, backcombed, where the back of her hair is brushed to the top of her head, ratted a bit, hairspray, then arrange the rest and add one can of hairspray. I'm not describing it well, it's an hour process at least, sometimes two hours. Add another hour at least if hair is to be colored, another hour if makeup is done, then help getting into the dress, it's puffy with a lot of layers. Then add ribbons to hair.

Every time I watch this scene I am struck by this thought: jareth had already given her the peach. She had eaten it and so , forgotten everything about her goal i.e Toby. Jareth did not have to send her the bubble. She had already forgotten and could have been left to forever wander through the labyrinth. But he didn't do that. He tried to convince her to stay with him by showing her this dream ball. Which leads me to think that it wasn't just about her forgetting about Toby. He wanted her to choose to stay beside him. Obviously it's wrong and represents a toxis relationship but man that's pretty romantic in it's own twisted way :')

I had something very similar in my hair as we left the church. Beauty and romance are what I get from this scene.

The expression he makes at 3:12. Gosh, it hurts me so much because it's almost as if he's watching his dream run away from him and reject him for something/someone she loves more (which I guess is basically the case here). He probably feels a wound in his pride and heart that even despite his status as a goblin king and despite all the effort he's expended on her, her brother is the only person she can see and the only reason she's fighting to make her way through the labyrinth. Heck, she was presented with all of her dreams and yet she forsook all of that to save her little brother. I don't know, but in that scene, I saw in his eyes desire, longing, loneliness, and anguish from being torn away from the only person he desired deeply. She chased down her dream and as a result, he wasn't able to chase down his. Also the way he gazes into her eyes (2:10 - 2:18) as he takes her to dance is just so mesmerizing. His eyes showed pure adoration. Not only that, but you can tell how strongly he was trying to entrance her in that moment in time. His gaze was direct and piercing, as if he believed that was the only connection holding them together. His gaze never left her even as she was becoming increasingly distracted by the reappearing masked person and the clock, and becoming standoffish towards him. I'm pretty sure in that moment, he felt it was just them two dancing in that dream. This movie is just all around amazing and the chemistry between Sarah and Jareth is just... GAH. Unrequited love, huh.

Throughout this entire movie, Bowies acting is practically all Eyes. He maintains this upright posture and glides through every action. His face is almost unchanging. Its just his eyes. All the emotion is there. In the Escher Stairs scene, he says the words "I move the stars for noone", and that look in his eyes is chilling. I am only just now as an adult, learning to appreciate these things, always ignoring this film through my childhood. Yet Bowie is truly a class of his own and that raw talent is certainly not wasted here.

You’re so right! I find that scene interesting, because if I was in Sarah’s shoes,... and David Bowie looked deep into my souls I would be screaming! And I’d be so nervous that I’m sure he’d win me over because that’s how much I love David Bowie. Or the part when he’s watching her from a distance making sure she’s ok, ya know? It’s like he cares so much for her, and I’m sure he’s in love! However I don’t understand how she didn’t feel anything for him throughout the whole movie! Or maybe she did and she didn’t want to confess? I still think she should’ve said yes to the goblin king. And I wish this ball room scene could’ve lasted for another minute or so... I just feel like they could’ve at least talked or something haha 😂

I respectfully disagree, Labyrinth totally lacks the qualities (not least of all musically) to stand beside those two titles you mention.. And the entire look and tone of it seems coldly calculated and lacking true spirit. No disrespect to Bowie, but he was a poor choice for the part, too well-known, takes me right out of the movie. Tim Curry, who did such a splendid job in the otherwise disjointed Legend, would've been a much better choice..

@ulfing - Well that's not true at all - The Titles are miles apart, but this is no less a classic. In many cases, a better a firm in terms of Music. Due to the Music Legend himself making this title what it is, it is what it is because of him. An epic classic for most people. Time is nothing next to Bowie and most know it.

Yup. Honestly, though, I account for that being because I am in my teens and understand that kind of thing (I saw it for the first time earlier this year and I'm 15). I think if I'd seen it for the first time, say, 10 years ago, I wouldn't have had that feeling, because I was only 5 then, and I didn't know that such feelings even existed - now as a teenager, though, I understand very well and am crushing on him so hard!!

I had a crush on him after this movie back when I was in High school, and yes In fact I always end up dreaming of him that we're together (and some 90's - 20's celeb. like Jeremy Sumpter, Zachary Quinto (star trek), Gerald butler at his movie "Dracula", and more) and they were also my crushes haha! Actually I'm the type of a girl who's obsessed with 90's generation like the actors and actress were so Hot and Super seductive, etc. haha

Bowie nailed it here with the look, the acting, and the music lifted it way up. This is a great ballad. Critics still say Bowie's 80's period wasn't that great aside from "Let's Dance". They are so out of touch. Hmm, let's see.."Under Pressure", "Cat People", "Absolute Beginners", "Loving The Alien", "This Is Not America", "Ashes To Ashes", "Fashion"

As much as much as this scene makes me swoon and I absolutely love it, a tiny part of me also feels really sad when I watch it - just knowing that he's dead and that I don't have anyone to dance to this song with. However, I want this as my first dance at my wedding, so I'm sure this feeling will someday go away.

Here's how it works. I think I finally figured it out. Jared is under the control of the labyrinth the labyrinth is the only thing keeping him from being an owl. It keeps him in power as long as he provides it with its population of goblins. Jerris admires her strength and willingness to beat him and finds her attractive otherwise why would he have created such a romantic scene to distract her? He wants her to beat him so he can be free but he doesn't because he doesn't want to be transformed. So he's evil but he has little bit of a heart. That's just my theory.

If you notice in the beginning of the movie, when she is trying to learn the lines to the play, there is a music box that has a princess in a white gown. The princess is her. The reason Jareth make that fantasy was to stop her. He knew that it was her dream to be a princess and all that jazz. So he used it to his own gain. Plus, when Sarah wished away Toby, she set the play up as she told Toby the story. Sarah made it so the goblin king was in love with her. Considering the fact that everything that happened to Sarah was a dream that she was forced into. That's why everything worked out in her favor, When things whent wrong, that was caused by her brain, trying to make her dream a nightmare.
