The Lace sound a bit fatter and have slightly less sparkle. I prefer the '59 set for the clean sounds and the Lace for the drive. Yep, much less hum. The Gold set are indeed most like a SC. I suggested some noiseless sets by Wilde in the past that have stronger/clearer note fundamentals than Fender SC's without any high-end loss at all, but the bridge model is higher inductance like a 60s Tele bridge PUP. That would have less highs than a Fender SC. Zexcoil has a new noiseless set with a lower Q that's just like a Fender SC set with a different core alloy that's less harsh than previous sets without loss of highs, but he just raised his prices. The Lace do sound nice. Say, consider the new TAD Redbase EL34 next tube change. They sound very full, round, and less-compressed just like the old Mullard XF3's, and are very solidly constructed by Psvane in China with a higher than average grid limit of 500V. Check out Pete Thorn's video comparison with an NOS RFT set. I prefer the less-compressed TAD. Dave Friedman even likes them.

To me it sounds like the original '59 pickups had more "Gristle" to quote Mr. Greg Koch. Both sound good, myself, I seem to prefer the '59 vintage/traditional single coils.
@GCKelloch
@GCKelloch 7 ай бұрын
@@hkguitar1984 Big Koch fan here...say what now? Gristle sounds about right. Ya' know, the Lace Golds have about the same high-end response as the '59's according to some very well-conducted tests done at the GuitarNutz site. The main differences would be the smoother attack sound from lower string pull, and possibly some very high harmonic roll-off from the slightly wider window aperture, but it does sound very different. The Lace are a bit louder without as strong flux because the Steel comb core pulls the flux lines from the strings down more through the coil than does AlNiCo.

Great comparison video! Makes me miss these pickups. Had Lace Sensor Golds in my Strat years ago and just like in this video, they were warmer than the stock pickups. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I was missing the spankiness from the wound strings especially. Because I wanted to keep the almost noiseless feature while getting some brightness back , I tried changing the stock 250k pots out for 500k pots and added a 1.2M ohm resistor in parallel coming from the pickups selector output to ground so the Lace Sensors were "seeing" roughly 350k pots and it worked! Seemed to be the sweet spot for me after trying a bunch of resistors ranging from 800k to 2M.

Shane should've put the TBX pot to retain the brightness. Fender already noticed the lack of brightness of the lace sensors and used the TBX pot on the strat deluxe with lace sensors. TBX pot is a passive tone control which cuts the low when maxed which "boosts" the treble. Another trick is to adjust the height pickup closer to the string. Lace has way less magnet pull than normal single coils so it can be adjusted higher. The higher the pickup, it will sound more treble. And another way is to swap the 250k pot with a 500k or 1 meg pot

@@guitarsfunmods3986 Bingo. I don't think his PUs were maxed. You wind them up to almost kiss the string and then drop them until you get no impacts. That's how they sound brightest. Also, there's a video with blind tests and F CS singles, where it really is pretty hard to tell the difference.

The Lace Pickups sounded warmer and a little compressed. The Fender Pickups had more spank, and a lot of noise. I suggest getting another Pickguard and loading it with the other set of Pickups. Put in Pots, Caps, Switch, and a single Quick Connect for the Jack, and you've got an entirely different package of electronics you can swap out in a few minutes without soldering. That's what I've started doing. 😉

The Lace pickups sound great. I play at church and I can get some nasty hum. I run a noise gate but there’s time where I need to play quieter and that affects it. Like you said, a quick tweak of the amp knobs will get you really close to the other pickups. One guitar that I really like is my old vintage G&L Skyhawk with the PTB system instead of standard tone knobs. I can set the amps bass, mids, and treble all at noon, and adjust at the guitar on the fly. I like the versatility of Leo’s system so much, that I’m going to modify both of my Rickenbacker 360/12’s to this PTB system this winter. Sometimes the bass player can’t make it and it is really convenient during a song to be able to bring in a little more bass when needed. Great video Shane. Keep up the good work!!!

I like the fact that they look similar to the stock pickups and are not that expensive. It was difficult to find YT reviews that didn't involve some sort of Metal style playing (nothing against that style, it's just not what I play). Not only did I enjoy your playing, but it was also nice to hear the pickups in a context I would also use them. Thanks for your help.

I think they have a richer, smoother tone while the original Fender pickups sound a bit too harsh. Also, the lack of noise from the Lace pickups is definitely a wonderful benefit. I have had a set of the Lace Chrome Domes (single coils) in my strat for about 10 years now and thoroughly enjoy them. They are great all around pickups in addition to being quiet. I was super hesitant about going noiseless, but then I realized one of my favorite players (Dean Ween) used golds in his strat live and I’d never had an issue with his tone. Traded out the stock pickups in my schecter traditional strat-style guitar, with a double-gold splittable humbucker in the bridge. Absolutely adore the tone and I never get complaints from the sound guy about noise anymore. Th thanks for the video!

The Lace company has so many variations of the Sensor, you can end up with the paralysis of too many choices! (And then they’ve got the Alumitones, just in case you weren’t bewildered already.) Every pickup company does this, with so many different choices - but in reality, they’re similar enough that a little change to your amp settings can mask any major distinctions.

After watching this video among a few others, I got a set of Golds taken from old Strat Plus (two cable version with metal baseplate). I’ve heard these sound a bit different than newer ones, but anyway - I’m really falling in love with them quickly. My impression is that they do not sound exactly like a vintage single coil, but they do behave in the same way. Meaning like, you can hear a pickups’ general tonality over KZbin, but you can’t hear the dynamic response. I’ve heard people compare this pickups to other noiseless designs like DiMarzio Area. I’ve tried both and to me they’re different worlds. Area sounds like a single coil, but it reacts to picking dynamics like a humbucker, which is what it is. On the other hand, Lace sounds a bit more like a mixed hum/single sound, like it has a bit of parked wah sound blended underneath, but the way it reacts to the pick attack, playing dynamics, is unmistakeably true single coil. As said in the video, these are not completely noiseless but they’re 90% there, the 60Hz buzz will not bother you any more than idle hum from drive pedals or gain channel. Also, sound-wise, they’re not fully there, as I already mentioned, there’s a bit of honky parked wah sound layered that kind of smears notes together when you play a chord under a bit of gain, and they’re a bit dead on the overtones, but dynamics are as spongy, saggy, quacky, as any of you regular strat pickups. You just don’t get that in any vertical stack design. For me, Lace are the clear winner of my noiseless strat quest, the first and only pickup so far to get me to point where I can say, it’s close enough, now I can play my music and not bother any further. On a final note, there are recommendations to put those pickups as close to strings as possible, that didn’t work for me, they lose a lot of strat character that way. I found them sounding their best when set further from the strings, just like plain vanilla strat pickups, and no, they don’t lose the output, they just regain clarity. My neck pickup is almost level with the pickguard and sounds like a charm.

The Lollars were a bit more powerful and articulate, but I found myself setting up the Nash to as closely as possible emulate the Fender, because the Fender spank, to me, will always be THE sound of a Stratocaster. The sensors sound a lot like the Lollars and while they sound clear, articulate, and quite nice, once you went back to the Fender pickups, I just heard THAT sound.

I usually keep my tone controlled around 6 on my Fender. My partscaster with the Sensors doesn't need that. I love the silver from the 3 color set.

Great comparison, in the apples to apples, the lace pick ups are not quite as bright, not as articulate. However, both sound great and what you said if you eq a slight adjustment you could probably get them to quite similar. Thanks for taking the time. Great video.

I perceived a lack of edge/snap on the Lace bridge pickup in both mix and isolated clean tones, a fair bit less diff between middle & neck pickups. In clean tones the Lace bridge struck me as somewhat Tele-like. Not ice-picky, and good that it wasn't at all muffled. The noise test was impressive. In terms of live playing I expect the Lace pickups would be a good option. Thanks, Shane, a useful comparison.

I put lace sensors on a bunch of guitars in the nineties. I found them to be gre at pickups, except on low volume & clean. They were muddy. I also discovered that when mixed with humbucking pickups, they sometimes made them DEAD quiet, quiter than tue HB on its own. It depends on how the HB is wound.

I have been using an hss set of the golds for about 8 years, and they're solid pickups. The humbucker is wired with a 3 way toggle, so i can still get the single coil bridge sound.

why 3 way?

Its basically a selectable coil split. The middle position is the full humbucker. The upper position is the top coil of the humbucker, and the lower position is the bottom coil.

@@jonathanmeyer1164 thanks, but is there a big difference between the 2 coils that makes it worth it to need to be more precise when switching? (I‘m planning to get the gold deluxe set with a 2way toggle to split)

There is a slight difference to my ear, but i dont have the right gear to properly record it to see how much of a difference it is, if at all. I liked the idea of having 2 more tone options in the middle/bridge position though.

What sounds are the lace pickups not picking up? And will they still pick up vibration-caused sounds from ajacent strings (causing us to palm-mute)?

I think both sets sound cool. I like Lace Sensor pickups because they capture the sound and look of Strat Plus from the 80s. The only downside is their price. They are a bit too expensive. At least here in Europe. Shane, could you review some affordable pickups? Such as Tonerider City Limits or IronGear Texas Loco. Thank you.

I have heard the Hot Gold set is brighter and a tad less compressed, likely not counting the extra hot bridge. I would consider Lace Hot Gold beck, RWRP Hot Gold or Silver middle and a Purple or Burgundy Bridge.

Gold Lace Sensors sound a little bit fatter/hotter but they keep the sparkle and bell tone. With overdrive they shine!! Many ('94) years ago I modified my Am Std Strat with a Lace Sensor red on the bridge,. It was great with high gain sounds so it gained lots of versatility...

Thought they both sounded great the 59s had a bit more top end sizzle which I preferred but the sensors are probably better for a live situation and better for higher gain

They sound pretty close. I do like the girth and grit the stock ones have, a bit more character imho. But I’m sure you could adjust and dial in something very similar on the Laces. The main thing is to understand whatever pickups you choose to use, and spend some time adjusting them to their best sound, then dialing them in on your amp. (sometimes a tiny turn of the screwdriver, or a slight turn of a knob can make a very noticeable difference.) As for noise, those of us who prefer the stockers can always use a noise gate. 😉

Once upon a time I put an original set of Lace Sensors in my Strat. If memory serves me correct, I opted for the Gold in the Neck, the Blue in the middle and the Red on the bridge. I thought the whole idea of a "silent" single coil would be nice. However, after using them for a while, I swopped them out for a set of Texas Specials. They didn't impress me that much either. I have a USA 62 Reissue with a set of '57/62 pickups in and honestly, they're just the dogs bollocks! Nothing quite like vintage tone in my honest opinion. I found the Lace Sensors too "smooth" and wasn't sorry to see them go.

Great video. I actually like the original '59s though I do hear how the Lace pickups are cleaner. The Lace sound more compressed to me and with less output. I prefer the grit and what would be described by some as the "harsh treble quack" of the '59. Though see, ... at the end of the day I don't hear enough of a difference to justify an upgrade versus say, ... would rather be spending the money on a pedal.
