I watched this film over and over again, something appealing to me. Melville is a stylist.

It's available on the Criterion Channel. You need to be a subscriber, or you could sign up for a free 7-day trial. www.criterionchannel.com/videos/le-silence-de-la-mer Criterion also released it on DVD and Blu-ray, so, if those formats are an option for you, you could check at your local library.

I love the later version in color. I don’t know if the BW version has English subtitles.

I understand all that is said here, the era and the fact that this was his first film but I found the film to be rather heavy-handed and too styistic, too New Wave, to accurately represent the book (in my opinion). The second film, if 2004, erred a bit more towards romance so so missed accurately representing the humanity of the book, I think it was more accurate than the first by focusing on human beings, which, to me, the first film did not.

But what is the meaning of the very last scene ? The captain came back to France to be with her, but the relationship had to be secret ?

The first film was made by a Résistance member, based on a book of another Résistance member. The topic is not about a romance. It is about dignity.

Fighting the writer is why almost always studios buy book rights outright. The writer has to take the money and disappear.
