It's been so long since I've seen the live performance of a play or musical; I know the experience can be magical in a way movies cannot capture. I ultimately hated Steven Spielberg's vision of The Color Purple. He pandered to patriarchy and easy sentimentality and turned the powerful character of Shug Avery into a little lost girl seeking redemption from daddy and the church. Totally antithetical to the message of the book.
