I think that unfortunately Prismacolor is managing to live off their old reputation and still manage to make money so they are ignoring the problem. I am one of the folks who is newer to creating art, and based on their reputation and the fact that they were softer and creamier, I purchased Prismacolors. I am SO disappointed because all the issues you mentioned are happening with them. I live on disability due to chronic illness, so even the Prismacolor were an investment for me. Now knowing what you have said, I wish I had waited until I could have afforded the Luminance or just bought what I could afford open stock and built up slowly. Oh well, for now I am stuck with the Prismacolor, but as they wear out I will be looking at the luminance as replacements. Thank you for this informative video and for letting people know the problems with Prismacolor. There are still many videos that speak of them as the best pencil out there, and for people who don't have the knowledge or experience, it is sad.

I need to thank you so much for this video, I have a old set of Caran D'ache that my brother gave me and I'm almost completely running out and I was told by an art teacher who compared my pencils to her Prisma Color that they where just as good, after seeing this I know that I want to save up to get more of the Caran D'ache. Also I agree with what you said about them having more natural colors, while I didn't really care about that when I was younger, I've had these pencils for years, I really appreciate it now.

You're 100% on target. Prismacolor Pencils were once the gold standard in colored pencils. Today, they're not worth 1/10th of their asking price. I received a set of 72 as a gift less than 2 months ago, and already 95% of them are basically tiny nubs due to the need to sharpen and resharpen because of breakage. I've since moved on to Faber-Castell.

I didn't notice much difference when the pencils transitioned from Berol to Sanford. Despite their low price tag, it's problematic when a $2 pencil has to be replaced BEFORE it gets down to a nub.

I have been working with Prismacolor Premier for over 18 months and I think they have improved more since 2014. I do baby my pencils but I also am careful with how I sharpen and what sharpener I use. I use the sharpener dahle 133. You can mount the sharpener or simply set it down, hold it while sharpening your pencil. I cannot tell you how much this sharpener has helped in breakage. When sharpening PC, I sharpen to a sharp point with this sharpener. It has really made a different using that sharpener. I have different brands of colored pencils but I go back to Prismacolor Premier because they are so easy to blend with a blender.

I have a set of 72 prismacolor and 60 faber castell polychromos. I like the prismas more because they are so easy to blend. I've never had any problem with them breaking. I've seen a lot of artist complaining about this but my pencils are fine. The faber castell are good for detail but you can also have detail with prismas if you work more on it. I think prismacolor is a good brand for beginners because all the other brands cost a lot more.

I have had no problems with my fairly new set of 72 Prismacolors although, they do burn through much faster than my Caran d'Ache Pablo pencils. I love how informative your videos are! Keep it up!

+stefano carlo Celsi They're still good. I really like them because of how creamy they feel and they blend well. You can still create great art with these pencils, but you still have to be aware of how often they break. Do whatever you can to keep them from breaking. Use an electric sharpener, be gentle with them, things like that.

I bought a Prismacolor set of 72, and nearly all of the pencils came with the lead broken inside. I tried several sharpeners (thinking it was my problem) until I found out that a lot of people were having the same issues. Next time going for Polychromos or Luminance that's for sure!

Best review ever!!! I adore my Polychromos, but do use my caran d'ache white for the brightest, opaque white. I also do still use my prismas but more for shading. Its a great compromise and use of each.

My mom gave me her Prismacolor (The line Berol, I don't know if they make those anymore) pencils from more than 15 years ago, and they are pretty great. They don't easily break, and I use an electric sharpener as well. Although sometimes they are not centred and sharpen in a weird way. Prisma pencils are really hard to find in my country though. In shops you find Caran d'Ache and Faber Castell pencils more easily. Although they are REALLY expensive for sets, but you can still find them open stock. Great video, I find that even your older videos are very good quality and you seemed very comfortable in front of the camera. J10

I used to think that Prismacolors were the end all be all of colored pencils and got a little pissy when people dissed them, but after watching some of your other colored pencil comparison videos, and giving Polychromos and Caran d'ache Luminance a try, I can really see the differences you're referring to. I currently own a large set of prismacolors and a 12 pack of Polychromos, and I find that I have an easier time blending prismas but Polychromos are better for detailing and have less breakage issues. When I picked some of the Caran d'ache at the art store though, I was amazed by how it had all the features of the Prismas that I loved with the creaminess and thick leads, except they were far better made. They're out of my price range for the moment, but maybe someday I will get myself a set.

Hi Lisa, great videos followed for a long while now. Like yourself I made the switch from Prisma color to Luminance for all the same reasons. BUT STOP, DONT THROW THEM AWAY!!!!! I learned that by putting them in the oven for 2 mins fixes all the issues of breakages with no loss of value. I nearly threw away 100's of pencils for no reason. However the caran dash pencils I find more superior. Keep up the good work love love love the videos thank you.

Thanks Lisa for putting out these videos. Luckily I bought a couple 120 sets of prismacolor colored pencil sets about 10 years ago and was given almost another full set by a friend. I haven't ran into a lot of problems but I still buy some pencils I use a lot. I have heard a lot of great things about faber castell polychromos sets. A couple of my fav artist use them and say the same thing as you. That they started with prismacolor and converted.

So now Im able to get the 150 set of prismacolors for under 90 bucks. I think they are still definitely worth that. I will never be able to afford the Lumninece.

I got into the medium again recently and went to pick up my favorite brand and it was a complete disaster. I can't afford the luminance pencils so I don't know what to do.

Some options: * Get a smaller set of expensive and high quality pencils and learn to blend and layer (Caran d'Ache Luminance and polychromos could work this way). Plan for something between 12 and 24 colors, start with an initial batch of essential colors and over time add a few more (4-6 colors at a time to not break the bank) * Get a bigger set of more affordable quality pencils (maybe the Faber-Castell pencils will do the trick!) * Make sure to practice intensively with the intent of selling the artwork and turn the expense into an investment

Very informative video. I've used Prismas for the past 8 years and noticed the problems you've mentioned and always chalked it up to a bad pencil, but I have never looked into different brands. I might order some of these and test them out. In my experience hand sharpening with a razor blade or exacto knife prevents a lot of breaking of the Prismas, but it does not completely eliminate it. I love both the faber castel and luminance. I think the luminance feels more quality, it’s a lovely hold and don’t seem to get through the pencil. Yet the colour goes just as far if not further. Luminance is definitely creamier. Never had any issues with lead breakage. Faber castel, love these too, have the other ranges that faber castel do as well. I love both the FC Polychromos and luminance. I think if I was starting out id probably get the luminance, it’s not worth in the end getting anything cheaper as I think you would just be disappointed. I’m in the UK so not sure how expensive US is. 😀

Angela Richard I totally know what you mean. I had nearly given up on colored pencil all together after that flamingo that I did last year. It was such a frustrating experience. If you look back at my older videos, I rarely worked in colored pencil before Feb/March of this year. After I got new pencils I really started enjoying the medium again :)

I keep hearing that prismacolor is having quality trouble. I'm using them since a while now with a hand helped sharpener from steadler and I never had trouble with it. I'm very gentle with them to keep the lead from breaking when I carry then around. Thats all I'm doing with it. No matter how I sharpen them. How hard I'm coloring. I never had a broken lead. Never. Not a single one. Not even once. I don't know why people have so lich trouble with it. Plus the white is quite opaque at my experience. The cream is opaque too but maybe a little less. I live them they are good quality opaque bright creamy and blendable.

The biggest takeaway from this video for me is that the luminance pencils are lightfast. That won’t matter for people that aren’t producing works they’re concerned about lasting long term. As she noted in the video, it’s very possible to deal with the prismacolors breakage issue. In my own experience, simply sharpening the pencils with an xacto electric pencil sharpener removed my breakage problem. I still hate the waxiness of prismas. Overall, it’s really difficult for me justify the price of caran d’ache luminance pencils unless I know for certain my original works are going to sell (as opposed to prints) - in which case, it becomes necessary.

Thank you for making this video. Just discovered you. In Europe Prismacolor are seen like the copics of colored pencils. I've always been wondering if the fame was earned. After this video and other artists telling me about the same, I have no more doubt. I use old Caran D'ache prismalo aquarelle, but use them as regular pencils, without watering. I think they work impressively, and you can make a lot of layers.

I just picked up a set of prismacolors from amazon for very cheap. I wouldn't have considered buying them unless they were so cheap, because I had heard of the notorious breaking problems. I bought polychromos a few months back so I'm excited to see how they compare.

Thank you for such a detailed and informative comparison of the two different pencils. I believe it is a sign of the times, with the dollar dropping so rapidly... the two companies have to charge what they do to stay in business and cover their costs. However, prismacolor seems to want to stay at their price point, and the only way for them to do that, is not only to cut costs for the pencil casings, both in what they are using for it and manufacture.. but IMO especially in the fact that if you are hacking the pencil down to the nibs, consistently.. it will be sooner that you need a new pencil, than later. I saw this early on, in the late ninties with computer printers. If you spent more then $400 for one. you got an ink cartridge for not that much, that printed huge, beautiful picture after picture with it. Good ink, too, as i still have some of those beautiful 8 x 11 photos. But if you spent around $150 for the printer.. the cartridges needed constant replacement. The company ends up making around the same amount of money for either printer but the customer is conned into buying what he " thinks' he can afford.. even though the end result is that he ends up spending as much. Just not all at one time. I suppose that is somewhat of a blessing for some people, who might not get into colored pencil drawing or coloring, if they had to come up with $300 right off. At least they are getting the same quality of pencil color to some degree, and all it takes is for them to put up with the aggravation of the breaking and sharpening.. and the slow bleed of their wallets..

I use Prismas, and I love how soft and creamy they are, but the casings are garbage, just like she says. I use an electric sharpener, and that helps a LOT, but when the core is completely off-center, no sharpener will get you access to the core tip, and you end up breaking out an xacto knife with a core that's so soft you can't touch it without breaking it. Sigh. I don't know that I'll buy another set of Prismas, however, and I'm starting to experiment with other brands to see which ones I can be happy with as a replacement. The Polychromos are so hard and the light colors are way too translucent for the way I use them. I'm also a burnisher, which isn't as nice with the oil-based poly's. Anyway, I completely appreciate this review/compare. I'm gonna get a set of the caran d'ache, which I've put off because of the price. Thank you so much for this. The points of preference you chose to speak about are the ones that concern me most in choosing a pencil. Great video.

I use the Prismacolor Premier, which I have had no problem with. I do hear though that there are colored pencils by Prismacolor SCHOLOR, but those work about as well as Crayola.

Caran d'Ache are my favorites since 1985, but I also like Koh-I-Noor, Lyra, Cretacolor and perhaps my second option would be the Faber-Castell Polychromos (they are not creamy but they are smooth). I really like (and I have) the Lyra Skin Tone Colors Set. Concerning about Prismacolor, I got a 120 color set to my wife and we both hated that. I will never buy another Prismacolor product again. I also feel like with prisma color, the drawing usually ends up too pastel- like because you can't always get the range/ depth of color that you want. Also, just a general question, but what would you consider your style as an artist to be?

Thanks for the review, I haven't had issues with them breaking by sharpening and i think the verithin line of pencils would help in the detailing department, but if i was doing commissioned work I would definitely get the luminance just for the archival quality.

I've noticed my prismas have been splitting for a long time. I'd taken to sharpening them with knives which doesn't give me sharp points. =P Now I know why. Thanks for the info! Arwen Robertson Have you tried using an electric sharpener? I've had the best results that way with mine. The thing is to not sharpen them with the long point, but the shorter point option on the sharpener. The Derwent battery operated one I've been using has worked well. They still split and break, but not nearly as bad as they did when I used other methods to sharpen them.

I have tried electric sharpeners, and they do work better. I had just figured that the leads were so soft, that the pencils were so delicate, etc. I was surprised to learn about this. Thanks for the extra tips. I want to use what's left of the pencils, and hopefully it won't be as aggravating as it has been. =D

The first pencils I bought were prismacolors. I didn't have the breakage problem at first until I started to use a certain green color. It broke over, and over and over. I looked at the bottom of it and it was way off center. I ended up buying 2 open stock pencils because I needed that color for my picture. I have polychromos and think maybe they are my favorite. I bought some Pablos, and they seem kind of hard to blend, but have beautiful colors. I decided to try out luminance, and bought a box of 20. They are beautiful colors, but again seem a bit hard to blend. Maybe I'm just used to the softness of the polychromos? I kind of think prismacolors suck. They are making a bundle from the coloring book craze, so perhaps they don't care about quality control.

I think You should try out the Faber Castell Grip trio sharpener for your Prismacolor pencils. This is the only sharpener where my pencils never break 👍🏽

Prismacolor Black may not be as scratchy, but I think it is still worth it to use the Luminance pencils for large chunks of black, because you are avoiding bloom almost entirely!!

I don't know if I'm lucky or I don't press hard enough the pencils i just don't know but I have never had a broken lead with prismacolor as in 1:40, and I used to sharpen them with a really basic sharpener, when people complained so much about how likely to break were their leads I thought they were talking about the very point of the lead which for me breaks all the time and that's the major problem I had, specially when trying to make precise lines, they are hard to keep sharp but other than that, no major problems! :)

I don't know much about Prismacolor pencils, since they're not really that much of a thing on the european market, but in my experience excessive breakage in colored pencils is almost always the result of the lead not being glued into the wooden shaft all the way through, but only at about five or six points. This is usually found in low quality pencils, but can also be the result of a company trying to hold down production costs in order to maximize profits. I don't know if that's the case with Prismacolor pencils, since they seem to be in the upper price range, where one could expect some dedication to a high quality standard, but then again, since a lot of formerly great companies switched from caring more about their shareholders then about their customers, it is absolutely possible that Prismacolor sacrificed the quality of their product to the gods of the market. It would be interesting to check whether the decrease in quality that many commenters seem to have experienced coincides with a change of management in the company or with the company being bought up by a bigger player.

Michael P I've not tried the pablos yet. I've heard great things about them though. I believe those are better than the luminance for detail work, more like the polychromos. The polychromos I know are an awesome pencil. I like using my polychromos for detail and the luminance for areas that need softer blending, and of course for any white I use :)

S. Mahon It's just a black artist masking tape that I got from Jerry's Artarama. It's not a high tack tape :)

I am using Caran d'Ache Prismalo Aquarelle colored pencils but I don't have many of them, 35 if I remember correctly (can't check atm lol). I've been thinking about getting Prismacolors since according to many artists on Instagram they seem to be the best choice.. This video kind of changed my mind. The Luminance colored pencils sound much better but right now I can't afford them. I also live in Europe so I would have to order prismacolors online but caran d'aches I can just pick up from a store that I visit few times a year. So, I guess it's better to just save money for the luminance colored pencils? :)

☽Nightsaber Aiska ☾ I would. In the long run you're not really saving much (especially for you being that you would have to order them) on prismas because they don't last as long. A big reason so many artists use prismacolor is that its all you can find over here in the US unless you order online. A lot of us just assumed that they were the best because we hadn't tried the others. A lot of artists still do make this assumption. I did for years, I know :P

Lachri Fine Art Luckily my set of 120 is about 8 years old, plenty of play time before having to buy more. I did have to get some for a class but I stood in front of the open stock display and checked that all the leads were centered and the wood was clear. Darker yellow/brown wood means it's more porous and more prone to crumbling and splitting.

i have made several drawings and portraits with prismacolors and they have never broken a single time , infact i tried luminance and they were not as smooth and waxy as prismacolors.

I want go buy either the polychromos or the luminance pencils but I've had a hard time deciding what brand is better. What do you think would be better to buy?

Elyse Williams With those two I don't know that I can say one is hands down better than the other. I personally use them both together. The polychromos are better for detail, while the luminance are better with blending (especially that white pencil). I'm no help I know! I started with the polychromos and just used the white luminance pencil before I got more luminance. That worked well, but like I said, I'm totally happy to have the full set of each now.

Very interesting video. I'm always intrigued to learn about new art supplies! Are you going to do one comparing the caran d'Ache and the the polychromos set? The caran d'ache are too expensive for me so im hoping to buy some polychromos around Christmas. Question though - is it better to invest a bit more in the 120 set for more colours or go for the 60 set - and blending more - and have more to spend on sketchbooks and things? Also have you had many problems with the polychromos fading at all? Also, how do you find your reference photos? I don't really know how selling art works but how do you find reference photos that are not going to be copyrighted etc. ? Sorry for alot of questions haha :) great video!

Enub eroo I am going to do a luminance vs polychromos in the next month or two. I always say to get the largest set you can afford. For my reference photos, sometimes I take them myself, sometimes I get them from friends who are photographers, sometimes I use reference cds I purchased from Jason Morgan ( www.jasonmorgan.co.uk ) and sometimes I get them from paintmyphoto.ning.com

Hm I got prisms color pencils earlier this year and have used them a fair amount, I've noticed cracks in the wood casing but no issue with the led breaking

Still don't get the enthusiasm for Prismacolor Premiers. Caran D'ache really do rule. Hands up I use the Prisma Verithin black and white over the Premiers for outline work, but I jut don't get the Primsa madness.

Great video Lisa. I would love to get the full set of luminance but it will require a bit of saving I fear! Lol. I have been trying to build up a full set of the Lyra Polycolor pencils. Have you tried those at all? Im quite liking them...mostly only used them with my prismas up to now but hope to try something soon with just them on their own. They have lovely rich colour, hold a point so nicely and dont break...plus they are quite affordable. They could be a good option for artists who want a better quality pencil than the prisma but cant afford the Luminance. Thanks so much again for the video! I have learned so much from you...I am always amazed at your generosity! :)

I've been in the art field (professionally) now since 1989 and have use Prismacolor pencils since I started, they are great pencils to work with and up until a few years ago I didn't have any problems. Now I notice about 10% of the pencils I get are just crap and no good, I am getting more and more disappointed with Prismacolor as the years go on, thanks for this video, I have been looking at alternatives to Prismacolor for my next purchase and think I'll give Luminance a try... It is a shame really, other than the poor quality control, I am pretty very with the other aspects of the Prismacolor pencils.

How do you sharpen your colored pencils? I'm just curious as to how to keep them sharp without wasting them. I just bought a set of Polychromos pencils and I'm scared to sharpen them lol

Eva Cobb I have a battery operated electric sharpener by derwent that I've been using for my wax based pencils. For my polychromos though I actually prefer my little hand held metal kum sharpener.

Have you tried Derwent Coloursoft? I've really been wanting them but I'm not sure if they compare well to luminance, I've already ordered the largest set of polychromos and they should be here in a week but i want a wax pencil to try too but dont have money for the luminance

Jee Studios I've not tried them. I've heard good and bad about the derwent ones. I definitely need to give them a try myself. With the luminance the only real bad I've heard is about the price. You may want to pick up a couple of white luminance pencils. You can buy them individually. They are on my must have list :)

Lachri Fine Art A little birdie told me the Luminance pencils are opaque, not as translucent and the Prismas and Polychromos. Have you found this to be the case? I'm used to doing very thin glazes in watercolor and want to get into layering with CP.

Faber castell are cheaper, but of high quality. Try their "watercolor pencils" They are really nice. If you want watercolors, I recommend Camel, they are cheap but underrated.

Arteza colored pencils. Set of 72 expert pencils for 30 euros. On amazon they have regular discounts for about half the price. They're good quality and don't break fasy.

***** I love them both to be honest and in my own work will continue to combine the two. There are things that the polychromos do better (detail work) and things that the luminance do better (the opaque white pencil and smooth blending). I really wouldn't want to have to choose just one to work with :)

I have a question. Im going to buy The Faber Castell polychromos set with 120 pencils. First i was going to buy The prisma colours but then i saw your Video when you Compared them so I think the polychromos are better. And back to my question I wanted to ask what I should also buy maybe something to blend or things like. Because I'm new to the coloured pencils I normally use markers from copic for my drawings . Caran D'ache Luminance & Faber Castell is the only color pencils,l will use Primascolor or overrated they wear down too fast,but you know the ole say you get what you pay for,but me personally,l recommend Luminance and the FC polychromos.😁🎨👍
