This is fantastic. He's such an eloquent man, and to hear his stories and watch him play is wonderful.

32:00 They should have kept this version of the main titles for the final film! That theme is used way too infrequently as it is. Dammit, Yates, just let the man do his job!

@ 16:23 '14 versions of the same cue!' and he thinks Barbra is not obsessive!! John Barry was the original composer of The Prince Of Tides and left the project due to what appeared to be her OCD! Though John was a Yorshireman; slightly stubborn with a short temper; he may have been partially to blame?! James makes some good points. For anyone interested you can here John Barry's take on The Prince Of Tides on his Moviola album released in 1992 and it is the Moviola theme that is The Price Of Tides Main theme. I love James' score to TPOT but even more so to The Village - a real standout but too many of his scores sound generic. Nice man though!

He strikes me as a bit lazy in answering the students' questions. First of all, recommending that young composers spend more time with their sequencers instead of less seems very misguided to me, if the purpose is to learn composition. The Indian student had 2 questions but only the second was answered. Then the youngens are saying "we are songwriters" and I think what they mean is "I am not studying traditional composition techniques". If this is the case, then the right answer would certainly have been "just study composition, add techniques to your arsenal, this is what will make you flexible and adaptable". A question was even asked about how to learn instrumentation and orchestration -- but it has never been easier to learn these things. The most important bits are the "what not to do" items, e. g. starting a french horn phrase at the top fifth of its range. Writing without knowing what not to do results in parts that are impossible or frustrating to perform. Just ensure you are gradually studying composition, don't do everything at once, it takes a lifetime.
