Tour of the Historical Lacock Abbey. The Hadwins Tour the +800-Year-old Abbey that is tucked away in the Parish of Lacock, 3 miles South of Chippenham.
Built in 1232 and now owned by the National Trust, the amazing Abbey has had a very colourful history.
It has been home to Augustinian nuns, home to the Fox Talbot Family and the site that the first photographic negative was produced. But it is now famously known as being the location seen by millions of cinema goers in the Harry Potter Films. The cloisters are often represented as the Hallways in Hogwarts, in no less than 3 of the Harry Potter films.
The main part of the Abbey has been transformed by the Fox Talbot family and now resembles a luxurious 18th Century Manor, but the outer Cloisters and wings still keep their true 12th Century feel and looks. We spent a day walking around the Beautiful Abbey and its garden and then toured the Fox Talbot Museum. The Museum highlights the many chapters that have occurred in the world of photography. And it shows you how far we have advanced since 1835, when William Henry Fox Talbot captured the first negative in the South Room of the house.
The Abbey Tour lets you see many of the original housewares, from books, to chairs and portraits and due to the sensitivity of these artefacts, you are actually prohibited from taking photos when using a flash! Amazing antiques to see and a great story from our history, but when you have children with you, Harry Potter is always going to take centre stage...
