Lada's on fire at Rally Legend!! - Always Sideways, Show & Jumps (Lada VFTS, 2101 & 2107)

During the last few years at San Marino Rally Legend events there were a group of Lada-Vaz cars which were literally stealing the show driving always sideways and powersliding just to entertain the crowd.
These three little cars are part of a family of car sold by the russian company Lada-Vaz from 1970 known with the appellative Žiguli and born as a modified license copy of the Fiat 124. The first one was called Lada 2101 and it was followed by numerous upgraded versions (2102, 2103, etc untill the 2107).
In this video you can see a Lada 2101 (the red and yellow one, #90, driven by Istvan Marton Dudas), a 2107 (white/sky blue/green, #85, driven by Gabor Hodosi) and a Lada VFTS (the most "extreme" one, #91, driven by Karoli Vizelli).
The Lada VFTS is a proper rally car based on a Lada 2105 powered by a 1.6-liter engine which produces around 170hp on a car that weighs aroun 950 Kg.

Us Hungarians love racing with Ladas. There's a whole community around these cars, and they are popular in the rally scene. A few years back they were popular on the streets too. Nowdays you can rarely see them on the streets, but the fans and meets still keep these cars popular here. Lightweight, easy and reliable construction makes for a fun RWD car.

What engines or setups to these cars have that makes them so good? I'm really curious. The Fiat's were good but for what I know, the Lada's weren't really... well, "good". So I'm curious to know what magic was/is being done to these seemingly unreliable, badly built cars. Please enlighten me, seriously 😂 Greeting from Portugal 🇵🇹

@@TiagoFerreira20930 Well.. This is really hard to answer. It all depends on the budget of the team. Some are running less modified engines, others are custom built. They were made somewhat reliable by trial and error over a really long time. There are different tuning companies that specialize in Lada engines, many develop their own parts. One of the biggest is Havassy Motorsport. They even have a price calculator on their website. A custom built engine could cost as much as 8.000 €, some even more. Changing the original pistons for Lada Niva ones, using carburetors, custom exhausts are a few examples of starting mods. Power output however is typically under 200 hp.

1:04 this is how real masters of RWD attack curves. They pull the center of weight left - right, so can ride through easily than entering the curve without that masterpiece. RESPECT!

@ДубоLomm Для заметки : само название VFTS вышло как первые буквы из полного названия експериментального цеха, который в советское время находился в Вилнюсе ( Литовское ССР ). Полное название : "Вильнюсская фабрика транспортных средств". Сокращённо : "ВФТС" а на латыне "VFTS". И все что связано с этими четырмя магическимы буквами, так это то, что там ( в VFTS ) в восемьдесятые года был разработан отличный дизайн раллийной пятёрки 2105, который был назван как LADA VFTS. Вот и данный дизайн так и до сих пор остался узнаваем как LADA VFTS. И до сих пор, многие раллийные мастерские продолжают создавать с нуля (с уличных 2105 жигулей) в таком-же историческом виде раллийные пятёрки. И в той же Венгрии и во многих других странах везде к ним прекрепляют те самые четыре буквы - VFTS. Как то так, по мне....

Hi Bozzy.👋 Well, I'm arriving to the comment section about a day late, so it's quite obvious I wasn't driving a Lada.😆 Until your videos, I don't believe I had ever heard of them. The profile of these cars looks nearly the same coming or going,🚗 but we have to be careful judging by looks alone . These are well tuned, proper rally cars and appear to be a blast to drive!👍 I'd venture to say the Lada would make a great drift car as well. I've just purchased an old Russian Lada Riva ( 1990) I'm preparing, struggling a bit to get the bits, i.e., LSD Roll cage etc. Can only purchase off eBay, and the roll cage looks like I'll have to get one bespoke build as you can only get a 6 point bolt in cage off net. Exhaust is nothing bespoke build which eats up money. Great vid.👍

I have to say, the VFTS is no longer Russian. Who gives them bigger respect than Hungarians? In my days, those boys who couldn't recognize every bolts and nuts from a Lada, they were called girls. :D

I can't remember any rally Lada on youtube without HU numberplates. All of them were Hungarian, it's crazy. Nowadays in Russia these cars mostly used in winter drift.

Basically, in Russia this car is the cheapest platform to build any crazy stuff you want. Can be a drift car, low-budget rally car. You can easily put JZ in it. Costs from 20 000 to 50 000 roubles. And there are thousands of these
