but he was using lathe. he made body of the gear from that bigger chunk of round stock.

@@oorangejuce true! But if you have the cylinder you can grind the shape with a file. The most difficult thing there is to make teeth at the gear. And he made it without using milling machine. That is an extraordinary thing 👌

Just a heads up (machinist here) the jaws on the lathe chuck can be turned to handle larger pieces, back them all out, the jaws should be numbered, turn them around and start at "1" once you catch the first thread insert jaw "2" then "3",make sure you insert all of them on the first rotation or your jaws will be off. Stopped to comment on the jaws, after watching the rest I have to admit, making that gear was impressive, hopefully one day soon you will run across a nice milling machine (heavy duty), indexing heads are a little expensive but well worth it for cutting gears.

I love your restorations, it's always great to see hand tools used as much as possible. And with your lathe, I believe the teeth for the chuck can be flipped around to hold bigger pieces.

I don’t think so as the teeth on the back of the jaws are curved so they can engage with the scroll. My lathe has two sets of jaws that look identical except for the teeth on the back, they curve in opposite directions on each set for just this purpose. I hope this helps. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Just a heads up, the jaws on your lathe can be turned around. Make sure to replace them in the same position (jaws should be marked by factory). Concentricity may vary.

I came here to say this. Your lathe CAN handle that big stock! Just flip the jaws. You can see how they are stepped and have grooves/teeth on the "outside"...

Be careful when using oak in contact with food, the tannic acids in it can ruin flavours. Beech wood (like the original) is safe, as well as most woods from edible fruit trees (cherry, pear, ...). Another awesome restoration btw, love your channel!

You're correct but in that case i'd like to think that the oak is not in contact long enough with the food to have an actual impact on the taste, and plus, those guys are French, they are particular about stuff like that :)

I have never seen anyone make a new gear before! Restoration videos are often what I watch when I can't sleep. I find them fascinating but I'm sensitive to certain sounds so these are always perfect to watch when I don't want to wake the husband. Thanks for keeping this insomniac entertained. Side note: I think this is a grandfather/son duo, just guessing from the hands seen

My favorite activity as a kid was making sausages with a stuffer just like this one. It was a once a year affair when the Christmas pig was slaughtered. That all ended in 1970 when Castro abolished Christmas in Cuba and made it punishable to even put up a Christmas tree. Christmas was only reinstated in 1998 after Pope John Paul ll visited Cuba. I doubt this tradition was ever picked up again, but it was a lot of fun doing it as a kid while the entire family had its own tasks to make a fantastic Christmas eve dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed this video so, thanks a million!
