I'm no expert, but here's my 2 cents (sometimes being a novice helps in scrutinizing the details) 1) the ladder should extend above the roof top by 3 feet. 2) you should step onto the roof BESIDE the ladder, not over it 3) when descending, while facing the roof, you should first place both hands on the ladder posts, then step onto the ladder from the side at the level/height of the roof, then 4) transfer your weight SIDEWAYS onto that foot (squarely on the ladder), then you can easily descend. That way, you never have to look down
@DigitalRoofingInnovations
@DigitalRoofingInnovations 4 жыл бұрын
That is a valid point and that is certainly a safe process on ascending on descending a ladder. There are no exact rules on that except it's preferred to have 3 points of contact and to have an extension above the roof.

100 percent agree. I am not an expert for sure but I was so shocked he is showing people to hop backwards over the top of the ladder to get yourself back on the ladder. A lot of people gonna try that maneuver and fall backwards off of the top of the ladder. Sorry but definitely unsafe to climb over the top of the ladder to get back on it from the roof.
@Cannon-Fodder
@Cannon-Fodder 2 жыл бұрын
I was always taught that it's three foot above roof line. But some circumstances can call for two feet. I have been working on ladders for 24 years, and stepping backwards over the top rung onto a ladder is definitely not the way I would recommend to do it. Too much of a trip hazard, or leaning back and falling. I know that each person has their own tried and trusted ways to use a ladder safely, so do what feels comfortable for you. Good advice though on if you don't feel comfortable, or safe on a ladder or roof, DO NOT go on it.

I noticed that most people who are new at home repairs can go up a ladder just fine, but then they have problems going down the ladder. Especially how to position themselves for that first upper rung of the ladder when they are just about to come down the roof. Which is why it's important to use a ladder that's high enough. It should extend at least 1 metre or 3 foot above the roof, so you can grab the handrails before bringing your body onto the ladder. I'd suggest he doesn't have his ladder high enough in this video.

Rule of thumb I've heard is to put your feet at the bottom of both legs of the ladder and reach your arms toward ladder. If you can extend your arms out and grab each side then it's set at right angle. If you can't it will slide out from under you or if your elbows are bent then your to close and ladder will fall backwards

Okay, I have a real problem with climbing onto a roof with these multi-use type ladders. The problem is the widening of the ladder at the top. Good ladder safety guidelines usually demand that the ladder extend 36” past the roof when climbing. These ladders widen significantly at the top, so you have to get around the wide part with tools, tool belts, etc. This does not feel safe when I do it, so I only use an extension ladder for going onto the roof. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Same concept applies to a low roof as a high roof, do recommend securing Ladder on top and bottom if you plan on getting on a high roof. Also make sure your ladder is 3 rungs above your stepping point onto roof to you can step on ladder standing and from the side. Do not recommend how he gets on and off roof in this vid for low or high roofs

Great information! Thank you! I have a 2 story house that’s about 20’ high to the top. I’m a 67 year old female trying to get a cat down that has been up there for 1 week. He’s afraid to jump ~ 8ft to one of the lower level eaves. I’ve tried coaxing him with everything. I’ve stacked boxes on top of an extended ironing board sticking out of my window (LOLOL neighbors probably think I’m crazy, I don’t care). Then I stacked boxes on top of the ironing board that isn’t very far away from the roof but he’s still scared. The reason cats can access the top roof is because the next door neighbor’s tree hangs way over our roof and causes many problems including insects dropping all over our deck and branches scraping our shingles. Good grief! He’s not the only cat that has been up there.☹️

I've never been a mad fan of heights, but currently learning Maintenance stuff at my job. Changing air filters on the roof isn't actually that hard of a task but, they wanted me to carry about 8 of them (lightweight) but its enough to fit into a big cardboard box. My trainer wanted me to carry the box in one hand and climb up the ladder one handed which i feel very uncomfortable doing as its an older building and not the most sturdy of roofing ladders. Do you suggest maybe buying like a rope with a hook on the end to just pull the box up once i reach the top? I've started a new position at work and I know this may seem very silly but this one thing is making me feel unable to perform this task even though I know what to do once on the roof. I commented because you seem down to earth and know what you're talking about. I understand if its a silly question but I was trying to think of safer ways to accomplish this task while minimizing risk to myself

I have been a professional painter for just on 50 years and this demonstration could easily have been titled everything NOT to do when climbing a ladder on to a roof. First off it is far safer to have the ladder on the section of the roof that has the gutter...because the ladder is making solid contact with a straight line of roof and not an angled line (This would tend to make the ladder more prone to slip) And if you are climbing the ladder correctly your weight is all on the ladder and not pushing on the gutter and damaging it. Also the there should have been far more of the ladder above the roof line....at least another 2ft....this makes it easier to step directly on to the roof and so avoid the potential of "Burning your hand on a hot roof" (Had to chuckle about that!) Sure wear them AFTER your are on the roof it you want..but wearing gloves when climbing a ladder only makes the average person have a far less secure grip on the ladder) Also I have never seen a professional put a leg over the top of a ladder when stepping on or off a roof....doing this makes the risk of the ladder or worse you ending up on the ground far greater. You have enough of the ladder above the roof line so that you can easily step around the side and on to the ladder. Look around on Utube for other videos on ladder safety...because this is not even remotely a safe way to tackle climbing a ladder or getting on to a roof! But hey, don't take my word for it, you'll have plenty of time to regret the advice in this video when your in the ambulance on the way to the hospital!

Good looking video : ) Most deaths or paralysis occur on 6' step ladders as the break point is between the second and third vertebrae where the average neck line contacts the ground If you're going to fall, jump of vertically they say, then you land in your feet, hit your knees then with elbows protecting your head you roll into a ball then roll and turn impact force into kinetic rolling energy, but better off being tied off on a life line, it's simple anchor bracket and rope, takes 5 minutes, Say you have a roof tie down anchor 25' from where you're working at a roof edge, it's 65' from the ground, 70' from the bottom of the elevator shaft, hook your rope around a roof truss right where you're working, so maybe an 8' straight fall would occur if you fell off a wall, however, if you didn't wrap your rope around a close framing member you might be in for a 20 foot fall at the point of drop in only to swing 15' back into a block wall and then your 6' lanyard, so, a 170 lb guy falls, he's at the end of his rope perspective to his fall location, but the anchor point is 25 feet back, he falls for 20 feet in a swing and smashes full velocity 15 feet away into a cmu wall, nominally, but the lanyard or rope with a built in lanyard system (which should then be only connected to your harness D ring and not your 6 foot lanyard) unleashes, so then a 20' swing drop becomes 26 feet of properly connected, or, if improperly connected becomes 6' on the rope with built in fall arrest plus the 20' of rope plus the additional 6' lanyard you're talking a 15' lateral positional fall at the drop point away from Anchorage, and a 32' drop to take you smashing into a concrete stair it elevator shaft, this needs to be integrated in OSHA around the globe. It's sometimes impractical to move an anchor every ten minutes, but wrapping your rope around a close framing member plumb up from where you're working might be in order

I do not have this problem with an old 6 ft fold out wooden step ladder. The rungs on the Aluminum ladder are not flat like the wooden ladder but rather round. Additionally, I climb with tennis shoes but have been told that the soles might be too rubberly so that rubber might be too soft and suggested using hard sole "brogaine" dress shoe with good traction sole. I've spoken to my father about this and he says he even notices how the aluminum ladders cause more soreness that isn't experienced from the likes of the flat rung old wooden step ladders. There is less surface area that you have to put pressure on with the Aluminum ladder leading to foot pain ladder after the job. For those with past history of plantar fasciitis who have it under control day to day with high quality orthontics...I'm wondering if there are some specific recommended work shoes. I can't imagine everyone is soaking in epson salt after every ladder climb for even a simple 15-30min task.

I want to start cleaning my solar panels myself. Climbing up a ladder seems straightforward enough. Getting off and back on your ladder to come down is what has me spooked. I have a two story house that goes straight up on all sides pretty much. Thanks for the tips.

A ladder that extends about 3 or 4 ft higher than the roof and dismount from the SIDE of the ladder, not over the top of it.

I'm about to pickup a little giant 22 to work on the roof. I've always had a horrible feeling while using my current ladder, especially climbing down. Ive actually wedged the ladder on an angle between my house and my truck just in case.

spray non-slip on the bottom of your flip flops before you walk on the roof. reapply when needed , you can tell when you walk when you need to apply more.

The ladder should extend 3 feet about the roof, which would put the 4th rung even with the edge.

Ladder Safety Training begins at 7:42, never climb a ladder when you are distracted, keep your mind on your work! Don’t risk electrocution, when it’s time to move that heavy ladder, lower it first and carry it horizontally with a ladder mover.
