Hello Pete, I must say that was the most enjoying and informative series on building a chicken coop. I learned a lot , you explained everything in such an easy to understand manner. Thank you and God Bless you and family.

Very neat system there! Thanks for taking the time to explain your thought process throughout the build. I went through similar gyrations when I thought I would be building a goat shed, but the family decided not to go with goats.

I know you already have your chickens. But when you made this video. The easiest way I found to program the light setting for when the door to close. Is let the chickens do it for you. When I built my chicken coop I made an Arduino powered door. At first I had my close setting to early and the chickens weren't ready to go inside. So what I did was wait until dusk and watch them for when they were going in on their own. At that point I took a light level reading then set my arduino to that setting. Chickens naturally will go to the roost when they believe it is getting dark. It was a learning curve for me. I wanted to make sure they were safe and secure. But believe it or not chickens aren't as stupid as people think. But also I really like your coop. The next time I'm building one I might steal your plans.
@petebeasttexashomesteading6 жыл бұрын
THE MARK'S FAMILY HOMESTEAD Yep they know when to go to bed, unlike me ☺ My chickens seem to go in the coop at sunset and the door closes about 20 minutes later, that seems to work good for them.
@rawrsalot5 жыл бұрын
That's pretty sweet. I have an automatic door openener in my chicken house in the winter called a goat. Unfortunately she busted the door when it was locked so I'm working on a spring shutting door so it can be opened from the inside when she pushes it with her head. But I may end up using one of those slow closing storm door devices if the spring shuts too hard.

Nice .. i dono but i think the wire on the inside should be inside some sort of conduit or old garden hose Because Chickens will peck at the wire it may take a bit for them to find it or maybe not but once they do i think they will eventually cause it to go bad & you will probably be wondering why it don't work any more..IMHO but you may have already figured this out or you may get lucky Who knows ..But Them Auto Doors Are Very Cool & I Must Say I Like the kind you got A Lot Better than the junk with the string ! It Should Last For Years

Wondering if you think it would last longer if it was mounted inside? Or maybe it wouldn't work that way?
@petebeasttexashomesteading6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess you could mount it from the inside if you have the room to do it. If you do, you would have to put a piece of electrical tap over the blinking green LED light telling you that the door is closed or it will irritate the heck out of the birds at night. 🙂

If a passing car's headlights hit the solar panel in the middle of the night, will the door open? I also have a couple security lights around the property. Will these lights prematurely open the door?
@petebeasttexashomesteading6 жыл бұрын
It won't open with headlights shinning on it. Just make sure the solar panel is facing the sky.
Thanks for the video. I have one of the automatic door openers with the string you mentioned. It has worked well for me however I do not like that it does not have a solar option like this one. My questions are: how solid does the obstruction have to be to stop the door. After it stops does it wait a bit and start again or just stay there? I would worry about it leaving my coop open all night.
@petebeasttexashomesteading5 жыл бұрын

Now you need an automatic opener for that window instead of having to go into the chicken run and scratch yourself on the wire unlocking it. A simple screw drive can do the job for you by attaching it to the window or a brace.

It's really not necessary. there's 6 spaces available for the hens, but they only use 4. But I might put something that looks like nesting box on the other side and use it as storage.

The biggest downfall seems to be warranty. If only 12 months they don't feel comfortable it will last beyond a couple of years if that. That's not to say it won't last more but when they don't trust that it will it doesn't say much for the product. And they are $219.00 now. Quite a bit more than run-chicken which I think was the first to come out with the concept. They too only have 12 month warranty which is sad.

@johnmaxwell52476 жыл бұрын
I don't care for it . Way too noisy and very slow. I would like to believe the tiny solar panels will last, but I have my doubts ( same as the sensor ) That unit is straining to work under the solar power it operates on. If they ever " perfect" it, I would reconsider , as it would be great for an off grid set up .
@petebeasttexashomesteading6 жыл бұрын
John Maxwell Yeah it's a little noisy but it's not because it's straining. The noise is because of the sheet metal the motor is mounted too. But it's been working great.
