Ladies Man S01E22 - Golden Girls Reunion

Betty White (Mitzi), Rue McClanahan (Aunt Lou) and Estelle Getty (Sophia Gates) briefly reunite in this CBS episode (15 May 2000) of Ladies Man titled Romance. Interesting that Estelle wore the same outfit in "It's Like, You Know..." and you wonder whether both shows were shot on the same day.

I then discovered the Mary Tyler Moore Show which Betty was in before the Golden Girls & Rhoda was a spin off show from. I don't watch tv at all. Modern tv is crap.

I remember this episode this was in 1999, and the show was on the bubble of getting axed. To have Rue and Estelle to be with Betty was a dream. At that time nobody knew it be the last time these [3] be together again. The other 2 would do appearance for Golden Girls. The show had potential, and it came on Monday Night's on CBS. You had to be around in the late 90s- 2000s.

Rue and Betty seemed similar to their characters from The Golden Girls, but they seemed different enough that you could tell they were different characters. Estelle however was 100 % Sophia.

Just to mention it: Since Blanche always thinks she's the prettiest on Golden Girls; while Rue is about 10 years younger than the other actors, this is about what the character Blanche would have looked like on The Golden girls if they all had an equal age.

On the Golden Girls, Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche were supposed to be about the same age. Their characters were born between 1930 and 1934 (although Betty and Bea were born in 1922). Rue may have looked older here because she had successfully battled breast cancer since 1997. It reminded me of The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy compared to I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball looked older and closer to Vivian Vance’s age in the later series.

I personally always thought that she was the same age as the others, while (when you look at close-ups) she downright had the most wrinkles among all of them..

@@cOcOmOo92 i understand. I believe Betty was prettiest. I love Rue, but Rue had health problems that detracted from her looks, especially later in life. She was married five times. She smoked. By 2000, she was no longer the sex pot she was in her fifties. It helped that Rue had written into her contract that all of Blanche’s clothes (the only one of the Golden Girls whose were custom made) would be given to her to keep.

@Jim Haggard on the Golden Girls Dorothy and Rose were nearing their middle 60s, Sophia was 80 and Blanche was in her mid 50s. So there was at least an 8 year age gap between Dorothy, Rose and Blanche.

I always like nostalgic reunions, but having a mother who recently died from Alzheimer’s, it was painful seeing Estelle here. She was clearly pretty far gone. Almost not worth the reunion, IMO. 😢

Maybe because she done her cameo as a different character, Bill Gates mother, not Dorothy's. The shell patterned handbag belonged to Sophia and was her trademark, as well as her legendary "Picture It". Viewers could get confused if she had the handbag. If you notice the dress was the same as the way Sophia dressed, but the hairstyle was slightly different.

Estelle does a tiny cameo at the very end. It only lasts about 5 seconds, blink and you would miss her. George Hamilton leads her in and introduces her as Bill Gates's mother. She looked very frail and also like she didn't really know what she was doing or where she was. It's very sad to see, but she must have insisted on doing it and I'm sure both Betty and Rue kept an eye on her and looked after her.

She had Lewy Body Dementia from 2000 to 2008 (until her death at age 84). This episode aired May 19, 2000. This could have been her last television appearance. I believe she was finally diagnosed in 2002 after being misdiagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease first.

@@popland1977 it’s possible. She was able to work until 1995. After The Golden Palace was cancelled in 1993 she co-starred as Sophia Petrillo on the last two seasons of Empty Nest (1988-1995). Unfortunately, I quit watching EN after Kristy McNichol left after season 5, so I never saw Estelle on Empty Nest. She ended up playing Sophia for ten years on three different shows over more than 250 episodes.
