tank is cold top element begins heating hot water rises top element will satisfy bottom of tank still cold Switch to bottom element to continue heating. Tank is hot Cold water enters at bottom Bottom element heats incoming water Can't keep up Top starts to get cold Switch to heating from top The intent is to provide as much hot water as possible. By doing this you can get something like an additional 25% of the rated capacity, so a 40 gallon tank can actually deliver 50 gallons of hot water before running cold. Technology Connections has a video explaining it in better detail.
@Torchedini2 ай бұрын
Also, in vertical stacks of water there will be temperature layers. So top of tank can be way hotter than bottom part. There is no stirring so to say. The elements are each roughly 4500 watts. Single phase electric water heaters only run either the top or bottom element never both at once. the top thermostat has a NC contact on it that feeds the bottom element when the top element is on it opens the contact to the bottom so both don't turn on and draw too much current.

WHEW yeah he's got a 20 amp breaker (at least that's the one he energized at the end - he shut off that 2 pole 40 first). At 4.5 kW he's pulling 18.75 amperes and that's 13.75% over what NEC in the US calls for. Wonder what the rating on that pig actually is. Even at 9 kW you're pulling 37.5 amperes which also exceeds that 80% loading rule. I digress. This is why I quit the trades. Trust issues.
@user-dj1hy6zc6q2 ай бұрын
Yup. Only one heats at a time, and if the water is all cold, it heats the top water first. Once the top water is heated, the bottom water is heated. Once up to temperature, with normal use, usually just the bottom element needs to cycle on. It fills from the bottom, empties from the top, and heat rises.

I told him what to do with his quote.

Yeah, new water heaters are garbage and are designed to fail after about 8 - 10 years. I'd keep the one you got, though I'd definitely drain and flush it out and maybe put new fittings and/or a new pressure relief valve on it every so many years. They can get pretty gunky with sediment even after 10 years, and I'd hate to see what yours would look like after near 40 if it's never been done.

Thankfully it was just a shit thermistor and they sent me a replacement. Their tech support, unlike most manufacturers, is actually very knowledgeable and pretty great. I guess they need that to carry the weight of shit quality manufacturing. The old thermistors were copper and all seem to be corroding from being wrapped up tight in an an environment that rapidly goes from hot to cold quickly (trapped moisture). The new ones they send appear to be brass and not as prone to the same corrosion.

6:10 the hot water heater has two elements. Hot water rises, but the water doesn't mix very much in the tank. Technology Connections has a great video explaining, how these two-element heaters work. Quite ingenious actually, they use the fact that warm water rises to the top, so they start heating the top layer of water first, so that you can have some hot water ASAP. Once the upper half of the boiler got to temp, the bottom element kicks on, heating the rest up. To heat all the water at the same time at once would need twice the power, which the grid cannot supply (not in the US at least), so this arrangement halves your time to hot water without doubling the power demand.

Great to "see" you again!! More tool reviews needed! Here's my somewhat educated guess about the lights and what elements are running. Since the tank is full of cold water, the top element comes on first because 1) heat rises and 2) the water exits the water heater from the top. So, heat the water at the top first for faster delivery of some hot water. After the water at the top gets hot enough to turn off the element, the bottom element will come on to heat the water at the bottom of the tank to give more hot water use duration. The water in the tank doesn't mix well. The hottest water is going to be at the top and the coldest at the bottom. During normal use, the bottom element does most of the work because that's where the cold water enters and the coldest water is there. The top element typically just comes on when you've used a lot of hot water and the entire tank needs to reheat again.

Its a little late but remove that plastic drain valve and replace with a ball valve and galvanized pipe. The next guy to work on it (you of course) will thank past you for it. They're alot lighter when you drain them.

Replace the anode rod with an electric anode rod it'll last 20 years.

Love your video. If you check, you will see it produce more hot water then the take holds. That is the two elements working. Normally it is only the bottom element on. As you use the hot water, cold water fills the bottom and gets a bit of heat from the lower element. As you keep draining the hot water out that now warm water comes to the top. The hot water heater will switch on the top element to step up the warm water to almost hot. It is 100% power to one element.

Most important part of pulling out the old leaky water heater is taking out the old anode and kicking yourself for not paying attention to the one maintenance item that matters...

You have to give them leeway on the sticker. The Chinese are not tall enough to reach the top of the water heater😂😂

funny to hear insults to the engineers from someone who can't figure out what the purpose of the drain is for at the bottom of the tank... and instead uses a vacuum to suck water up the dip tube to drain the tank 3 gallons at a time LOL

😂 hush , it was hilarious watch . Even my wife ( third year plumbing apprentice) was laughing her buns off.

Because maybe it’s not in a location that makes that an easy task 😑 my tank is in the basement the drain is not helpful
@texasslingleadsomtingwong87512 ай бұрын
@peterad1529 it had a pan drain . So hooking a hose up and running it to the location the pan drain terminates at would be somewhat logical. But don't get to hung up on AVE being all knowing. He's a very intelligent fella who has occasional human overnights. Lord knows we all do 😁

Probably doesn’t have a gas line near his house, he’d have to go propane which is a pain in the buttski. Electric water heaters are pretty common in isolated parts of the country like up north. You can go propane, but if you have electricity it’s just less hassle to do that, probably costs about the same too due to transporting and storage costs of propane.

I just replaced that same tank, had the identical rust leaking out, but mine was only 4 years young so they replaced it no questions asked.

I recently put in a hybrid water heater, it's skookum as frig. Doesn't cost as much to run. Even cheaper than gas, since gas shot up a few years ago.

Just a word of advice. When one is putting a water heater in a drain pan , set that heater on 3 3 inch coupling. Buy 5 total. 2 for setting in front to get the height and the other 3 in the pan to put the heater on. Saves the back when installing and taking it out. From a bad back turd herder.

I had the same water heater. It was 6 years old in 2021 when it gave up and flodded the basement. Gosh darn thing rusted right the heck out. The electric on. Mine was just used as a backup. My real hot water came from an indirect heat exchanger off the main boiler.

Our hot water heater (Solar thermal) had gone 13 years so far. Replaced the sacrificial anodes and back-up heating element last year and gave it a good clean out of the old decomposed anode. Enamel liner still completely intact. Also put it on a Shelly smart switch to control when the element can come on, so that only on cloudy days the element comes on and only during the middle of the day when our electricity provider offers free electricity.

That vacuuming out the water trick is gold! Yeah there’s the drain cock, but…on my old W/H in my condo, it was plugged with minerals and wouldn’t drain enough, if at all. The guy I hired to replace it had to wheel it outside, full of water, hoping not to tip it over in the hallway. Luckily I had a single-story condo. Now I have a house and the W/H is below ground level, so I’m not really sure how it will drain. It’s also about 15 years old so who knows if it’s drain would actually work, or if the floor drain can actually handle a full 49 gallons. I have a 12-gallon (Freedom Units! 🇺🇸) wet/dry vac; so when the time comes, I could just suck out the water, carry it up and dump it out, lather rinse repeat.
