Luis is 78 years old and has worked as a shoe shiner for 38 years at the same spot. He started at the young age of 10 and learned by watching other shoe shiners.
Luis works outside the offices of Telefonos de Mexico, a Mexican Telephone Company. The area is full of street food stalls and vendors, as well as office spaces. His shoe shine stall is located right next to a food stall in the corner of Sullivan Street and Manuel Maria Contreras.
Luis works with a mix of a traditional shoe shine box and a shoe shine stand. Since he started shoe shining he used a shoe shine box, and as he prefers to focus on one shoe at the time.
My Skater Vans Sneakers looked old and dirty. Luis took the time to clean the soles and apply some grease to hydrate the leather. These Leather Sk8-Hi Slim Zip Vans are one of my favourite sneakers. They're so comfy and have a zipper at the back that helps to put them on easily. I think the leopard print lining gives them some style.
