Ladoga Fortress in Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), Russia FULL WALKING TOUR

Ladoga Fortress is located in the confluence of Volkhov river and Ladozhka river in Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), one of the oldest settlements founded in 753.
According to Chronicles, the first wooden fortress was founded in 862 by Rurik and his squad when they came there and founded Russia (Old Rus).
The stone fortress was built on the border of 9th and 10th centuries.
Ladoga Fortress had a very significant strategic meaning for the control of the water way from the Baltic Sea through Volkhov river deeper inside Russia.

Thank you Sergey, you have outdone yourself with this one!!! I don't know if it was because I was enjoying this video 🎥 while listening to Russian Guitar and eating a REALLY delicious meal that I made (like seriously... 😁🥢🍷humus & spinach ravioli in a creamy tomato sauce, topped with fried mushrooms and sprouts tossed in oyster sauce, and eaten with chopsticks - to make it last longer... - Dear God it was GOOD❕❕❕ ) but I ABSOLUTELY savoured it 🎥!!! I was wondering the whole time watching this; Who WERE these people, and; what was it like 🤷‍♂ when they were building this place and living here❔ The scenes across the river are so beautiful, they make you want to cry. And the shape of the Church, it's as if they raised it right out of the ground❕ Stunning. Thank you SO much.

Yes, and a very Nordic one, yet unmistakably Russian. I'm from Sweden myself (like Rurik!) and I recognize these kinds of settings and wooded landscapes from here...The fortress looks great - we have many medieval and renaissance castles in Sweden too, but few that look this starkly, early medieval... The romantic ruin of Borgholm Castle, on Öland, is perhaps the best one - it was hit by a fire in 1806 but the walls are in great condition.
