Beautiful film. I picked up the DVD at Sainsburys and wasn't really expecting much more than a little period drama to pass a rainy day...but it's a powerful work of art.

People focusing on the age/looks of the main actors etc are really missing the point and have probably become too engrossed in Hollywood ideals. The original book and the film are about the very REAL sensual desires and needs within us ALL, i.e. normal people (warts and all) - primal needs and feelings that always win out and are as natural as the turn of the seasons. Notice how in the film the changing seasons are the backdrop to the awakening of the female lead.
