In Australia we use UHF radio's in our vehicles. We used Citizen Band years ago. Mounting antennas on the mirror frames is best. Sends/receives front and back of the truck/trailers. A good bit of length is handy. SWR it in.

Best talking antenna I ever used was a 108" stainless whip, mounted on a spring loaded base. Set it up with a SWR meter Second best was a base loaded Wilson with a little power behind it.

Hi Alice, being a cb'er for over 60 years, your antenna is only receiving where the antenna sticks above the trailer or the cab, which looks like about 2 feet. The reason why antennas are on each side of the mirrors is to have unobstructed receive front and rear. Your best bet is get your moms wilson 1000's ,there excellent antennas. Then have a shop tune them in. You will be able to hear about 15-20 miles in any direction on flat ground, and more when the skip comes in.

I don’t use a CB, instead I’m a licensed Amateur Radio geek, ie Ham operator. Radio propagation has many factors but as you have correctly surmised, that big metal box behind the antenna can definitely block the signal. You have two choices: get above it or get around it. The classic solution for trucks is co phased mirror mounts. This is an antenna on each mirror with a special coaxial cable setup that matches the two antennas together. The tricky point on this set up is that while it will get your signal around the reefer box, it will change the propagation pattern from roughly a circle to an elongated ellipse. So you will send more power to the front and back of your truck and less to the sides. Most of the time this is a bonus not an issue, but you will need to remember it. As others have stated you will need to tune your modified radio antennas for best performance. Although limited to 4 watts of AM signal or 12 watts of peak envelope power when in single side band mode, a properly tuned CB Radio has a range of five to twenty miles depending on terrain which is good for a short conversation while traveling along the highway. If you want to get out there further, you need to become an amateur operator so you can use different frequencies and more power. Well legally at least.
@mikealdrich7279Ай бұрын
I agree. Antenna on the mirror should help. I run a cab and a 2 meter/440 N3EOD

Ewwww, thanks Martin, now I'm going to have nightmares with that last scene. LOL Alice, yes if your antenna is at least the same height as the trailer, your signal will get over the trailer and the top of the trailer will act as a grounding plane so that will be better for you also. Another thing is I'm not sure if you mentioned it in a previous video but turn your Mic Gain dial all the way up. That is your sending and the squelch is the receiving side of the radio. Martin no more wigs brother and definitely no skirts. LOL

Either get a taller CB antenna or go co-phased on the mirrors. The advantage of co-phased antennas is there ability to perform where there is little reflective ground plane for the single antenna to radiate its energy from. Basically it avoids the trailer. The Wilson 2000 Trucker antenna work great. I use a Wilson 1000 magnetic mount on my car.. You do what's best for you.. Nice to see you and the pup on the road again. Sorry about the school board. That's politics for you. I love what you did with your hair. I mean you not Martin wearing a mop. LOL You kinda have the Taylor Swift look but without her money. Just wondering where Lady K is. @20truckАй бұрын
If you're antenna is no taller than the cab of your truck and it doesn't exceed over the top of your trailer and there's stainless steel back there especially from the reefer unit it will definitely block your radio signal. Your CBs probably only 1 or 2 watts at the most That's not a lot of power. You may need to move your antenna or talked on the electronics guy double check you don't have a short somewhere. Your coax could be coming loose from your antenna as well for it's got water in there and it's starting to corrode. Hey be careful if you're coming east of the Mississippi through Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina we've had some major flooding. In North Carolina I- 4 is completely gone in some spots I don't mean underwater I mean it no longer exists down near Newport Tennessee just below Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
@mitchwinder1204Ай бұрын
An SWR meter would show your signal output. Based on what you tell us your radio is doing I think you have a grounding issue. If it’s not with the power for the radio, it’s for the microphone. Just my .02. Remember, you paid nothing for it.
@gardnerkg5frq407Ай бұрын
Hello from a licensed radio operator first thing is you have a big null on your signal going out if it was me id move the antenna else where in front of the truck that way you have a lot more signal going out run 2 antennas on the front of your truck ex cb bace opeater now a ham radio oprater take my advice it well work wanders

You need to move the antenna out of that cage. the signal is just Going in to the back of the truck and trailer. Putting a taller one where you have it now could cause you some DOT issues
@phantomxterАй бұрын
Probably not the best location for the CB antenna. I only ran one back there center when I had a flattop. A top load antenna would be better in that location. Check SWR's and have radio peaked and tuned at a CB shop. Getting a mirror mount antenna would probably be better. Happy Trails ✌️
