It does hurt, but doesn't harm. The ear-piercing analogy is good - not pain free, but no harm done. The research community has been using satelite tracking of individuals now for a long time - they've got pretty good at it and have recovered enough devices to be confident it's not harming the tagged individuals. It's a lot better than the radio-collars traditionally used on land based tracking of wolves and similar species, which can be much more irritating to their skin and daily life.

@@lmlmd2714 I guess that it’s done for good reason and knowledge is a powerful thing in saving our wonderful wild species. I did wonder about if it affected them long term and the ear piercing analogy actually does ease my human conscience.
