Whenever you watch Lady Gaga sing, you’re not watching a set it and forget it kind of tonality. She has a multi faceted combination of resonances happening simultaneously. When she speaks, her voice is so husky and more focused in the mouth. But when she sings, Lady gaga allows some of her resonance to come forward into the mask which gives her a slightly brighter tone. She does this to allow the mask resonance to assist in lifting pressure off of her throat as the song progresses. She offsets the brightness of her tone by also introducing some backspace of resonance to give more depth to the overall sound.
In the chorus, Lady gaga becomes a master of paradox. The great paradox of singing is the sensation of holding on and letting go at the same time. The feeling of release is in allowing the breath to flow into the resonating space. Creating a consistent current of airflow. Once that release is established, you can introduce more muscle fiber into the sound which does in fact, slow the momentum of the breath down, giving the sound more grit and edge. There is always a ratio of both release of breath and introduction of muscle fiber into a sound She is masterful at establishing the flow in a way that’s congruent with her speech and is totally impulsed by her feelings.
Because her technique is so deeply seeded into her experience, she can allow her voice to be completely impulsed by her feelings. She trusts what she knows and it serves her well.
