The “25% black” reminded me of what I said back in high school. Our teacher asked us what race we considered ourselves as, and as she pointed to each one of my peers, they all gave simple answers like “black” “white” “Hispanic” etc. I didn’t exactly know how to answer because even though I’m African American, I feel I’m too “light-skinned” to be considered as “black” by some people, or maybe they would say I act too “white” or whatever. So my great idea was to use percentages based on my grandparents, and I told the class “I’m 25% white and 75% black”. There was this brief pause, as if the class had collectively went “….ok weird but sure” before my teacher moved onto the next student. I was the only one who gave such a complicated answer and idk if I should feel proud or cringey about it. 😂

I’m from Mississippi and I can say that most parts that I have been in, I have mostly seen white people. I live in Mississippi until around 9 to 10 years old, and that is when me and my family started moving to different states. But while I was in Mississippi, as an elementary child, I was surrounded by white people in my formal school. I am a mixed girl, but my skin color is a light caramel. So I used to be the only black girl in an all white school. I was never discriminated against by other students, nor was I segregated. For the most part, I was treated equally, the only time that I dealt with racism was by my teachers. I had got along with almost any white student that I had met at that school. Everyone had loved me, I had tons of white friends, and I dont remember being Discriminated against by students. One day in that school, may be about a year before me and my family started traveling to other states, there was 3 new black girls, who joined the school, and we were almost all of the black students in the school. And I was totally fine with that, the white kids were also OK with that, of course, we were young, so we didn’t really care much about skin tone. But ever since I moved away from Mississippi, I have been living in different states, and I experienced a slow incline in meeting black students. And still again, I don’t remember ever being discriminated against because of my skin color in the other schools in other states, that I have lived in. But I definitely can’t say, in Mississippi, there are black people there, but in most part of Mississippi, you won’t see that many black people in one area.
