There was a slew of these "smart alec cop" pictures in the "60s, not least the 'Harper' ones with the ever-smirking Paul Newman.

Tony Rome was a one of my favorite O.I. movie series!😊 Also, Frank play a detective cop with Lee Remick as his wife that was great crime drama.😊

I do believe this is Frank Sinatra's grooviest movie. Who are the idiots that gave this wonderful period piece jewel, 2 and a half out of 5, stars ?

Fun fact: the role of Harry Callahan was offered to Paul Newman and then Frank Sinatra who both turned it down because they felt the script was too violent. The part was then offered to some guy named Clint What'shisname who jumped all over it and that same year rose to become the #1 box office star in America and maintained that overall position for the entire decade. Trivia question: name the film for which Sinatra was nominated for Best Actor WITHOUT looking it up. That would take all the fun out. Fun fact part II: Sinatra defeated Henry Silva hand-to-hand in "The Manchurian Candidate"(1963), which almost ranks alongside Patricia Arquette taking out James Gandolfini in "True Romance"(1993) on the unbelievability scale. But not quite. I think I'd sooner bet on Bambi defeating Godzilla

I have never heard of "Dirty Harry" being offered to Paul Newman. Frank Sinatra accepted the movie and it proceeded so far that the studio had posters printed up with Sinatra as Harry Callahan, but Sinatra injured his arm before filming commenced and had to drop out of the movie.

@@user-eu5ln2sn5s That's very interesting. I've never heard that account before. Wouldn't it be great to be able to get your hands on a copy of that Sinatra as Dirty Harry movie poster! I can only imagine how valuable that sucker would be! It'd be like finding a penny with Lincoln clean shaven. On the subject of castings that might have been, I've got a few nuggets you might find interesting. Gregory Peck turned down High Noon because he felt it was too similar to a film he had done a couple of years previously called The Gunfighter. Montgomery Clift turned down Sunset Boulevard because he felt it was too close to his own story. I believe Travolta turned down American Gigolo because of the character similarities to a film called Moment By Moment he made a year or so before. Peckinpah wanted Lee Marvin as Pike Bishop but Marvin was already contracted to Paint Your Wagon filming roughly concurrently. Lee Marvin also turned down Patton in favor of a movie called Monte Walsh released that same year. John Schlesinger wanted Michael Sarrazin for Joe Buck but they couldn't agree on contract details.A year later Robert Altman offered Hawkeye Pierce to James Caan who turned it down to make a picture called Rabbit Run. Sam Speigel wanted to sign Albert Finney to an exclusive contract in 1961,but Finney was too obstinate. The first film under said contract would've been a little picture called Lawrence of Arabia. David O Sleznick wanted Gary Cooper for a movie his studio was producing but Coop didn't want to do it because he thought it'd be a flop. Clarke Gable didn't want to do it for the same reason, but had he refused MGM(who was loaning him to Sleznick)would have suspended him without pay for as long as took for another actor to complete the project. The film that neither Cooper nor Gable wanted any part of was titled, let's see if memory serves, Gone With The somethingorother...............Wind.I think that's it, but don't quote me.
