I’m much more a Sega Saturn fan. The arcade ports, fighting games, and overlooked gems are all fantastic. Too many interesting gems never made it out of Japan unfortunately. Famous PlayStation titles are much more accessible and you can buy many of them on other systems. Saturn has a lot more titles you just can’t buy anymore anywhere at least at a price that won’t drive you crazy.

To be honest, the Saturn might probably have been the best console in its era. But it's also one of the first times Sega made one of its historical mistakes. This being the undocumented transparency effects for the software. Only very few ever figured it out, many developers quoted the Saturn was difficult to work on... The cause being the limited documented devkits.

It would be too expensive for them to manufacture these consoles let alone market and sell them plus the looming fear of not selling well and the risk factor that hardware generally do not generate revenue. What they should do is re-print their old games for Saturn and Dreamcast or bring them to modern consoles. This will at-least generate them revenue

I bought a Saturn the surprise day it came out here in the states. May something 1995. I had no business buying a $400 console and expensive games at the time (age 20 college student taking a semester off due to lack of tuition funds). But I did it anyway. Daytona, VF, Bug, Clockwork Knight, Panzer Dragoon. Not the best lineup but most were quite fun in their own way. I remember the free VF Remix disc. And then there was VF2. And lots of other great games. How times change. I'm 48 now and even with 28 years of inflation I'm now pretty shy about spending $400 on anything I don't have to. Back then though It felt like a losing cause especially when sega saturn collapsed. If you invest on a console that was at the near end then why go for it? It is not a smart logical decision to make. As for me, I went from SNES to PS1 to Xbox. No regrets here especially since I love the Halo games (Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3). My K/D online in multiplayer was 1.04 in Halo 2. Halo 3- 1.46 (Isolation map 1.91). Halo 4- 1.66 and Halo 5 - 1.87.

On paper the Saturn is superior to the Playstation but what truly made it fail was the games. Third party support was scarce and Sega made a big mistake by not making follow ups of its most popular games. No Sonic 4, no Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Outrun, Hang On and so many others. Another problem was the short gameplay of some games. For example, Sega Rally had 4 tracks, 3 cars and that was it. Sega also kinda disliked RPGs and kept pushing for somewhat average 3D games just to compete with the Playstation.

Only issue with the Saturn is it's unfriendly programmable languages, vdp1 including it's ram and framebuffer (the lack of alpha blending/transpericies without the vdp2 chip) and lighting sources/Luminosity. Here in the USA almost no one had a Saturn. Everyone I knew had a PlayStation or later a Nintendo 64. No one cared about the Saturn and the Dreamcast a great system lost out because of that here. Not that Saturn was a bad system. It cost too much and did not have enough games on it. They had to sell it with 3 free games you get to choose to get it to sell at a big loose and still did not. What hurt them most was there were not enough 3D games and the few that there were, were not well-made and glitchy. In Japan, it sold better then the PlayStation and did a bit better in Europe than the USA. After Sega CD and then 32X I and many here lost all interest in Sega. Saturn was The 2d King with it's 4MB cart, Sony had the 3d. There were 2 engineers that made the Saturn slightly more powerful than the PlayStation with they modded it back then.

If I remember, Saturn didn't destroy the Playstation. The PS killed the Saturn. And Sony did it again with the PS2 destroying the Dreamcast. They battered Sega so much, Sega pulled out of the hardware wars (especially with MS entering and Nintendo having amazing franchises). I don't remember anyone owning a Saturn. I knew a LOT of people who had Playstations though.

I hated Sony for destroying Sega, especially when PS2 finished them off by thrashing the Dreamcast in sales when I felt the Dreamcast was a brilliant console. I was always a Sega lad from 1986 with the Master System being my first real gaming system and I will always be a Sega fan.

As a kid i was a Genesis kid but when i saw the Saturn ads they didn't seem appealing and no one i knew had one. The Best Buy and Toy r us near by only had the Playstation and N64 and my Cousin got a Ps1 with CTR and i got a N64 with Smash Bros. The 1st time i seen a physical Saturn was my uncle gave me his that he got for free with the game Bug around 2005, i put it way for years and kept it, and years ago i got the retro bug and got a Mode, fram mod, recapped, Actionreplay cart and a 3d Controller and its one of my favorite retro consoles 😊

I dont think final fantasy was the reason why sony won. For my friends & I the main reason was the MOD CHIP. Being able to copy games and spread it around with friends was the main reason we all got ps1 & ps2. For a non- working high school student it was impossible to afford to buy games at the shop. But for the price of a blank cd/dvd $1 or $2 you could own those games.

It seems as though most people forget this, but before Final Fantasy VII came out, the Saturn was outselling the PlayStation damn near week to week in Japan. Oh and, I didn't find this out until YEARS later into my collecting, but Mansion of Hidden Souls for Mega CD and Saturn are actually two different games. The Saturn version is the sequel, Sega just baffling names them both the same (the director of the games was even confused by this decision). Also, despite being a Super Famicom guy as a little kid from 1991 - 1997 (despite owning a MegaDrive since Christmas 1990), and a Sony guy from 1998 to present, I became a hardcore lifelong Sega fanboy in 2001. Looking back on things as a 20+ year Sega fanboy, everyone still talks about "$299" at E3 1995. But Do The Math people (Jaguar fanboy coming out right now). Saturn/Virtua Fighter/Internal Storage (limited mind you, but still there) = $400. PSX/Separate Game Purchase/Memory Card = $390. This was before the eventual Ridge Racer or Toshinden pack-ins months later. Not exactly a huge savings. Also, I have always felt that if the Saturn's FMV capabilites were better (depsite my Sega loyalty, I still admit the FMV quaity was trash), Final Fantasy VII would have been a Saturn title, as Squaresoft back then was still all about the Japaneae market, and the Saturn was killing it back then. Still breaks my heart that Squaresoft never made a single Sega game. In fact, it was heavily rumored back in late 1999 they were going to port Final Fantasy VIII to the Dreamcast.

SegaSaturn dominance is clear from 1994 to 1997. PlayStation became successful when Dreamcast arrived. Maybe that Sega should have delayed the release of the Dreamcast in Japan because the SegaSaturn was still a success in 1998.

To me, from the moment Sony announced they were entering the market as a manufacturer, Sega should have made an exclusive partnership with SNK. If the Saturn has had cartridge and CD rom compatibility with the Neo Geo/Neo Geo CD and backward compatibility with Megadrive games, things could have gone very differently....

I used to work with a guy who told me regularly about a "Dreamcast 2" project that was supposedly more powerful than the xbox which Sega was developing with Microsoft which he said that Microsoft nixed because it was too expensive. This all sounds like a little bit of nonsense rumors but you've found facts that seemed like nonsense rumors at first glance before so I wonder if there's any shred of truth to this.

It's possibly cutural, but Japanese launch games are just plain weird compared to what we had. I can't remember the Saturn's but the PlayStation's were: Ridge Racer, Destruction Derby, Battle Arena Toshinden, Lemmings 3D, Tekken, Cyber Sled, Air Combat and Wipeout. These were available at launch, as in the first week we saw plenty of others. In fact the reason some games had the double CD case, was because there wasn't enough of the Sony specific cases to meet sales.

I think the biggest reason for the PlayStation success can be seen in how Nintendo and SEGA tried to handle the market, specifically, their focus on taking control of specific smaller components of a much larger global market. SONY was able to leverage on multiple marketing venues SEGA and Nintendo never thought of targeting before, aiming for the young adults with cash via a nightclub presence bolstered by their SONY Music Group division and family units with better product placement in TV and Film by virtue of their media connections and ownership of Columbia Pictures. Then on top of that they continued with the standard advertising to children during cartoon blocks and an arcade presence via a deal with Namco that had games running on PS1 based hardware so SONY could claim 'Arcade Perfect', the gold standard term for games during that period and targeting the hardcore gamers of the time. SEGA and Nintendo just dropped the ball, SEGA by focusing on a specific region of the world, believing success in Japan was all that mattered and Nintendo by continuing to focus on a player base of young children who were more interested in what the 'cooler adults' (i.e. later teens and young adults) were playing on. SEGA and Nintendo were still running by the rules set during the late 70's/early 80's while SONY was already diving into full market saturation and not seeing the games consoles as toys but full entertainment systems everyone should own alongside a TV and VCR, a feat they truly achieved with the PlayStation 2 and it's ready to go DVD playback abilities with many people owning and even still using to this day a PS2 just for video.

That's because you focus on Western releases. Look at Japanese games and you'll see that there were TONS of RPGs. The Saturn would have been remembered completely differently if only these gamed had been released and translated for the Western gamers. Look it up, around 80% of Saturn games never got released in the West. Biggest waste in the history of gaming.
