it was overpriced because they were cramming ps1/ps2 emulation into it and giving you a decent hard drive, if you owned xbox360 you had to spring for the model with a hard drive

I went with Xbox for that console generation mainly because the ps4 controller felt wonky, and I was used to the 360 at that point, but I'm glad I didn't go ps4. And I still get use out of my ps3 from time to time, so I wasn't about to give up on what I had purchased.

The sad reality is Playstation moved their HQ to America being geared towards more AAA western market. It's partly why Nintendo Switch has completely taken over in Japan besides being a hybrid system in huge handheld marketplace. I just hope Nintendo doesn't follow in their footsteps :-)

Hearing that the company moved from Tokyo, Japan to L.A., the grounds of corporation greed and, sometimes, bs business says enough. I haven't invested in Playstation until they change the way they handle business, but I doubt that's to come. Money is all that company cares about nowadays. Really sad to see what has become of the company that was once loved. And, yes, being inclusive is a money tactic for these companies, for those who don't understand what I was getting at. Games are games, not a damn a political tool to use to get to people about shii majority gamers don't give a damn about. Too many games to keep up with the political ish.

If we had a perfect system until about 10 years ago and *suddenly* companies started making recruitment decisions that patronised and pitied many new workers, or made them feel like victims due to the colour of their skin and/or gender, then I'd be as disgusted as Lady D is here, but that's simply not been the case in reality. The issue is historical and systemic. It remains a fact that non-whites and women are underrepresented in the workforce, and especially in upper management roles, so it doesn't seem unreasonable for companies to try to redress that balance (although it seems many are only paying lip service to the idea). And even from a selfish point of view, I may be a straight white male but I'm also disabled and we're way below average in terms of the proportion of us who are employed compared to the national and global average, so I'm all for being given a chance to prove myself for that reason too, even if it's through a "diversity hire".

In my opinion they should be more concerned with diversity of games than diversity of staff. Take a look at the PS1 and PS2 there was such a wide array of games available. There were so many different types of games and they all looked so bright and colorful. But since the PS3 it seems to me that all games are just dark, dull and violent. That's what's wrong with Playstation. And that's why Nintendo on the other hand is doing so well. Nintendo seems to be the only one who knows what gamers want these days.

Nintendo and Sony don't even consider translating games to Brazilian Portuguese, even when considering the 200 million possible consumers. But they translate to Korean and even . The last game where I've seen some sort of cultural awareness for Brazilian people was "Samba de Amigo", in 2000. The issue here is that the majority of game developers consider "culture" and/or the world itself to end at the Equator's line.

When Sony launched the PS1 the industry was so very different. There was so much innovation, experimentation, proprietary technologies etc. These days game engines and hardware architectures are very unified. There's no real difference between console and PC versions of games like it used to be. Also with focus on big blockbuster games Sony and most big companies play it safe. Innovation still exists though and its with indies and some AA smaller studios.

But outside that, I don't dwell too long on the behind-the-scenes corporate stuff, and I enjoy my PS5 the same way I did ALL my past consoles- I buy games that interest me, avoid ones that don't, and wait for upcoming games while working on my backlog ( ^_^)b Suggestion if you don't mind. Title seemed vague+clickbaity IMO. I would've rather see a more descriptive headline mentioning Sony DEI or 'hiring practices' etc. Anyway thanks for your game documentaries and industry commentary.

For the record I've been gaming since the early 80's. The old slogan "games for gamers' is long gone. Wokeisum, distortion ideology, identity politics and social media. Yes, a lot of it is corporate fitting in rubbish. I work in a corporate role in consulting engineer, unless we are making a profit, no one really cares about diversity and saving the world. Now, I work with a very diverse work force, not because it is a goal, but because I'm in an Australian city and we just have many nationalities and identities.

I stopped buying new games after GTA V and game consoles after PS3.Gaming just didn't feel the same anymore. Playability was gone and the games just felt like a movie. Like a really long boring movie without much if any challenge. Lucky for me I have a large library of NES, Sega Genesis/SegaCD, Game Gear, PS 1,2 and 3 titles I can fall back on. This is just my opinion and I'm sure I'm biased cause of when I grew up and came into gaming but the NES-PS3 was really the golden years. Excellent content as always Ms. Decade. I’m all for equality but when it comes to the work place you need hard working and passionate people; not a mix up of various ethnicities, genders or sexual orientations. Bit that’s business now, businesses believe that if they have one of each, they’ll receive the consumers of each. Every dollar and every second spent on DEI stuff, is a dollar or a second compromised on the quality of the product. Nobody was being stopped from gaming besides their own choice, and you don't need ANY policy to hire a diverse team, just continue to hire the best for the job and do it without any form of discrimination or any consideration whatsoever for the person's attributes outside of their skills and experience. The diversity will apply when and if it wants to.

you mentioned that PS was the 'counter culture' in some ways (being marketed for adult and such), and i'm not disputing that but to me the PS1 was the only console to truly go head to head against nintendo.. ps1 had many different 'nintendo style' (family friendly) games, such as crash bandicoot and spyro.. i think that even changed a little bit with the ps2 where it double down on the 'adults' and the 'family friendly' games took the backseat (and every new 'mascot platformer' and such was now a shooter)

What utterly frustrates me about Sony is that they don't learn som every simple lessons. The PS1 was a happy accident as it turned out. Although they've always had the image of cutting but built to cost from their audio and walkman brands to their consoles and TVs. Walkmans being a prime example of constantly pushing the boundaries, making things smaller, less power hungry and still reliable and cheap enough. They built everything upon that - hell, I have a Minidisc walkman I still use a lot that uses 1 AA battry and will last about 8-10 hours at least on a single charge. Their PS1 was like this - a banger for £d, and yet undercutting Sega to the extent their announcement was just the price of 399. Come the PS2 they did the same and cleaned up again. It was for ages, the cheapest way to get a decent DVD player but also being a good console at a reasonable price. Come the PS3 they screwed up by thinking they were top dogs and could do no wrong, and they paid for it, and had to move the goalposts a bit. They also screwed up with the VIta - the PS3 was expensive while being decent, but the Vita had stupidly unnecessary memory cards that made the whole thing worthless. They learned from this and changed for the PS4. But now they're repeating the same mistakes yet again. And it's obviously worse because triple A publishers are wrecking things from their own end too. But having an expensive console with the addition of needing VERY expensive storage is a stupid endeavour. And of course moving the brand across to America with it's greedy corporate culture is obviously a wrong move.

I long for the days when video games was about video games. When I was slaying dragons with a line and a block in Atari Adventure. Eating power pellets and chasing or running from ghosts. Jumping with Mario. Beating up thugs in Double Dragon. Being welcomed to my doom in Altered Beast. Politicians were complaining about video game violence in the early 90’s. Politicians who have no morals or values. Politicians who are warmongers and criminals. See no value in life except their own. Now politics have destroyed everything. Not just video games. They want to control every aspect of our lives. Identity politics are meant to conquer and divide people so that the political establishment will have more power and control. I don’t want to see it in video games or anything else. I haven’t watched television in over 20 years. Movies don’t interest me at all. I’m a gamer and politics can suck it!

All consoles suck nowadays for a very simple reason. Games today in my opinion are not fun. The older consoles were awesome only because the games were awesome. Games today mostly suck... I avoided ps4 until there were a couple of keepers.. same applies today. Games today suck.

I've been saying this as well for a long time with alot of people disagreeing. Games now are all iterative (which isn't inherently bad) or void of any true creativity or innovation. They've regressed in alot of ways as well. People are starting to finally admit it now, though.

Playstation has certainly been doing better than Xbox in terms of sales numbers. But thats literally their only advantage right now because when it comes to creativity, they've been in the dumpster. I can NEVER forgive them for what they did to THE GETAWAY franchise by shutting down their developer SONY LONDON earlier this year. The Getaway series was a great competitor to GTA back in the PS2 days, and instead of Sony continuing to move the franchise forward, they straight up abandon it. Not to mention that other classic Playstation IP's like Socom, Sly Cooper, Killzone, Resistance, Syphon Philter, and many others have also been let out to rot in the sun. All Sony cares about now is mostly online live-service crap. We cant get another Getaway game but we can certainly count on live-service slop like Foamstars, SMH

Same applies to MS they still can destroy Xbox as a brand. But it will not hurt their overall business as much. And there is no such thing imo as too big to fail. Back in the day people were saying this about Nokia communication.

Great video, I’m a grown ass man now & as a kid in the 80’S, teen in the 90’s & an adult in the 2000’s I also disagree with the current ideology that’s being pushed around , especially in gaming at the moment. Everyone is aware of the dumpster fire Xbox has turned into, but PlayStation sadly is headed in the same direction at this rate. They are falling into the same issues and mistakes Microsoft has been making. Failing to cultivate their IPs, laying off too much staff for short-term gains, releasing fewer and fewer games with questionable quality and ridiculously long development times and expensive budgets. Making extremely consumer-unfriendly decisions that effect their reputation and bottom-line. Sony is in a much better position than Microsoft currently is though, there's no doubt about that. But at the same time, PlayStation isn't what it used to be, and if they aren't careful, they will very soon be right where Xbox is now.

I would say I agree with the start of this take, but it kind of undone itself when Lady D tried to speak on white male privilege. I was physically assaulted on a London bus from Sloane Square to Waterloo transporting students. Why ? Because the person refused to believe I belonged there and my London accent was obviously fake😑 "well, look at ya!" . That simply wouldn't have happened if I wasn't half Jamaican. It would be a "privilege" to be able to do my job and pay my taxes without being harassed, like everyone else. My dad has worked his **s off for 40 years on the railway, he's a manager sure, but he'll never get any higher and he told me why a few years back. This isn't a sob story, he wasn't bitter about it, it was more of a "that's just the way it is" . Everyone has lived experiences that are different so this video didn't need to go in so hard on the diversity angle, mindfulness of it is a good thing, the real issue is the pretending to give a shit with this BS exploitative marketing while closing studios down, ripping off European consumers entirely on price, crying "rising overheads" ....yet posting healthy profits and bonuses we could only dream of. THAT is the problem with PS and the industry as a whole, game quality is second fiddle to money, any money, black money, gay money, ...kids money! One of my younger students called their team "battle pass" in a class activity!, the horror was real.
