I've heard people try this song over the years even Whitney. Jennifer Hudson did come the closets but this one is Hollidays FOREVER. The only thing that had this much power to sing this song like THIS, is a freight train. Even Holliday herSELF can't do it as good anymore but she knows how to maneuver her way through the register to pass it off with ALMOST the same vigor. Hudson was a baby trying to do a MAMA'S job. Whitney didn't have the power to pull this off even though she was ok. Whitney tried too much to make it hers where it didnt even sound like the same song. Jennifer Holliday WAS the amalgamation of the greats. She had the SOUL of Aretha, the agility like Streisand, the power of LaBelle and the softness of Ross. She is actually my favorite singer it's just the problem is when you sing as hard as she does, your vocal cords gets torn up so bad that you prematurely lose all of your upper register. Chaka Khan is another who has the total VOCAL package of all of these but I can't see her singing this song even though she probably has more range than Holliday does without the HEFT.

Agreed its Holidays song hands down nobody can throw the same level of emotion in... although I have to disagree with Hudson as second, when Whitney covered it in one of her legendary Medley performances at the AMAs in 1994 ... she killed it. Even attempting Holidays song let alone 10 seconds after already performing a Nina Simone classic, and not running short on breath is absolutely astonishing, only to transition into one of her own classics and finish out stronger than she started. Hudson can go up there sure enough but range doesn't make up for emotion, tone, power ect.

When I look back, Jennifer and Whitney, ironically play a real-life version of "Dream Girls" Jennifer is just like Effie..... she isn't doing so well in the 80s / 90s after she's done with the Broadway show. On the other hand, WH debut after Jenn. came to fame. WH actually was sangin Jenn's swongs, like "I'm changing" "And I'm telling you", before she had her own album. WH was singing at Clive's pre-grammy's in 83 after she signed a contract with Arista. Meanwhile Jenn, tried to release her music but nothing become a big hit, and started to suffer clinical depression and blame herself for being a large woman and that led to her failure, so she had an operation to slim down, so she could be thin and beautiful like WH. WH passed away, Jenn is still here. She returned to broadway singing in "Color purple". Though Jenn never achieved any major/significant success, she continues to have her following, doing small gigs here and there. Healthy and still singing /sounding the way she does here on the video. Fame and success has taken away the life of WH after all. Money and fame don't always make people live happily ever after. In real life dream girls, Effie don't get to have huge success but get to live longer / healthy life.
