My how times change. I taught a course similar to this at Broward Community College in Dania FL. It was called Sailing “Broward to the Bahamas”. I didn’t know how popular the class would be but had to end up moving it to a lecture hall with 75 people! No plotters, no GPS, no good weather or gulf stream info. Just paper charts and one radio station in Bimini to try to home in on. Ha ha. Taught them how do draw current vectors etc. this was back in 1974. I also taught Celestial nav in the planetarium there. Man how times change. (I was in line to buy the first GPS available). Just a little box that gave you two numbers. Lat and Lon. Even though you had to plot everything on paper charts, it was a game changer. Nice job on the video!

@@randyfryling641 that is awesome! I'm 45 now and the plan is to retire and get a boat by 55. Kids should be out of college by then so I'm doing everything I can for the next decade to keep the dream alive. Sailing lessons, chartering, and anything else I can do. Thanks for the inspiration and all the best in your upcoming adventures.

Nicely done but I do take exception with your description of the Lake Worth Inlet West Palm Beach area. Besides many great anchorage's around the inlet including up and down the icw, all around Peanut Island and of course just northbound past the icw bridge from Riviera Beach to Singer Island. Not to mention there are a few wonderful marinas that Supply fuel, water and food there are also many great grocery stores along with plenty of places to dock at such Maria's. Additionally the Lake Worth Inlet is extremely wide and usually very calm. The traffic does very but the great thing about it is that many many boats leave from this port going to the Bahamas so that you can leave in a large group making it safer. Lastly you failed to mention that if you go to West End directly which does have accommodations for docking and Bahamian entry. That route is approximately 60 miles instead of the 74.

Very nicely done. The crossing from Florida to the Bahamas is something the Macgregor 26x/26m is really good at. You can "skoot" across at 12 - 20 mph, then sail and anchor normally. 26X/26M draft is 20 inches. with the keel up - opens up lots of anchoring spots. ;)

Wow,, Bimini blue water is only charging $1.00 per ft.? That’s great to know , we’ll be heading over to Bimini next month and usually rent a slip at Bimini sands marina on south Bimini, but I hear that the property is up for sale and there’s no one taking dock reservations at this point plus there not pumping fuel either. So we’re thinking either Bimini big game or Bimini blue water👍🇧🇸🇧🇸⚓️⚓️⚓️, safe trip back to Florida .

Having made thus trip dozens of times I suggest you leave from Cape Florida or points south. Leave around 8pm and sail all night to Bimini! In a 34 ft sloop, we would get in S the sun was just coming over the horizon for an easy entry into Bimini harbor! As the man says, pick your weather window when the winds are predominantly southerly so as not to kick up the Gulfstream! Do not attempt in northerly conditions unless you really like 10 to 12 ft seas.

Great video. I was there in 1981 so it was cool to see what it looks like now. We called customs the cop shop but never a problem. Music was blaring from certain bars even early in the morning, Such a great spot including both the north and south island via water taxi. Nothing but great memories and wish I could turn back the clock.
