Great video Tim. I actually bought the jeanneau you show in your video (with the davits) in sep and sailed 1000 nm with a friend from brisbane to devonport in Tassie. Happy to report that it is an excelent cruiser and super solid in bad weather. I was doing an av 5 to 6 knots when sail motoring in low winds and 6 to 8 when powerup with 18+ knots and no engine. The crossing in Bass Strait was horrific with upwind sailing winds 30+ knots gusting above 40 and side waves 3 to 4m. The boat behaved crazy well in those conditions that lasted from 6pm to 5 am when we finally reached the shore. To anyone looking to buy one, go for it. Happy new year!

Don't hold your breath on that. Once sailing channels become popular, they drift away from the core base, and message that gained them the subscribers.. Now its all about appealing to the upper price point membership that can afford the overpriced gear that channel sponsors want them to subtly endorse or highlight ..

a good and interesting review/commentary. Well done. I have put many miles on several SO37's including my own. A great boat in MHO. You don't mention the 2 / 3 cabin layouts but mix in the pictures of each. You don't mention the classic main or furling main options. Most of these boats have the Yanmar 3GM30F, i don't know why you got into the Volvo saildrive discussion. The SO35 is also a similar boat, you show it in one of your clips. I have done work on both Catalina and Jeanneau interiors, I didn't find them much different in construction or quality. My Catalina had more squeaks than my Jeanneau however. Just my opinions.

Sail area is a compromise. I owned an "underpowered" cruiser racer. Think about where you are. My boat was designed for San Francisco Bay, no need for a lot of sail. Racing in northeast was limited to spring and fall but with a fresh breeze we sailed by boats bouncing into the wind. You also have to be less diligent about reefing, sail management in bad weather and more stable in seas (my 18,000 lbs 38 could power through anything).

I replaced the factory Volvo saildrive doughnut seal last May 2024 on my 2003 sailboat. Volvo recommends every 7 years but it is rarely done that frequently. The seal was still in fine shape but it's a Lake Michigan boat with less than 350 hours on the engine. I hear they age more out of the water subject to light and potentially higher temperatures. It was a full day project... mostly raising and separating the saildrive from the engine in a confined area....of course doing major work in your "living room". Glad I did it for peace of mind. My saildrive is smooth and avoids alignment/ stuffing box issues of conventional drives. It is well suited for freshwater with less potential for corrosion issues.

Super review comparing these two boats that covers all the hits and misses. I'll take the plug for practical sailor as I was a subscriber (well worth every dollar) for all my sailing years, which I donated to the local library and gratefully accepted, after I swallowed the anchor and moved 450 miles (391.5 nautical miles) inland. These posting bring back that old desire to go from point A to B weather permitting passage and sometimes ending up at C if not, under sail alone. ALL THE BEST IN THE NEW YEAR TO OUR HOST AND ALL VIEWING HERE!

The Catalina 36 may be a good bet, though I guess it's pretty old now. Found one for a friend in SoCal and sailed it between Ensenada and San Francisco over 20 years ago. 36 Mk.II and 375 succeeded it. Quite heavy (13,500 lb) and good sailer.

I do love our Catalina 380. We really lucked out on finding a one-owner, fresh water one in our back yard. Such a great boat for us! Not being long distance cruisers, the huge rear berth is a clear winner.

We're getting in the market shopping for a 36'-40' for CAD100K. The Catalina 380 is on our short list, but boats are scarce in the Northeast and pretty expensive. Tartan 372, Sabre 362, and even Oceanis 373 are on the radar, but I never thought of this Jeanneau. Food for thought. Thanks! And Happy New year!

Hi Tim. It may be different Stateside but in Europe Volvo recommend changing the saildrive seal every 7 years, not 10 as you suggest in your video. Personal choice to do it or not but I’m sure there would be insurance implications if the recommendation was not followed. Thanks for always interesting videos and HNY to you and your family.

Looks like a good coastal cruiser. Mast is possibly stepped to the deck with a compression tube below, not quite sure how they might integrate that with the hull. Would be interested how they constructed the backup plates for the standing rigging and stanchions.

Another great vid. We can share some direct experiance as we just closed on a 2001 SO37 in November. First, understand the other viewers looking at the 380 as we did as well. Decided against the 380 due to market pricing, and as nice as the aft cabin and weight was, the stairs down felt excessive and step. But it is a different boat and unfair comparrison to the SO37 at 5k lbs more weight and yes 75% more $. The SO40 or even SO39i would be more appropriate. We would consider the Catalina 36 mkii a realistic alternative. Which was actually our second place option. In this scenario the SO37 is better and the 36 was still 20k more $. Everything you have shared about the SO take care ofs is 100% on point. But the performance is less dismal than you report. With newer sails, slab refing, it accerlerates quickly after each tack or jibe. In 15kts of breeze at 30 she'll do 6.75 and at 150 7.75 no problem. We still have the 2 blade, and while a 3 blade feathering would be nicer under sail and heavy seas, it still will do 8 knts at 2500. The slightly undersized canvas I believe makes this design faster. The flatter bottom sails faster flatter. And the boat feels solid and comfortable with variying gusts. The 36 likes more heal and felt slower. The 380 takes longer to get up to a slightly higher speed. We agree that a low use SO37 or fully refitted is key. But the interior we felt is actually nicer than everything else under 95k right now. The 2 cabin is also another key. Electronics are also going to be a topic on all the options. Our solution is most likely going to be integrating the Seatalk1 devices to an Orca2. Want to say thanks for all you have done Tim. Have watched you for years and appreciate your view, modesty, and just real world average sailor vibe through all of LK, PS and the HS channels! Have an awesome happy new year🤙

My Baba 30 cutter has sail area/displacement of 15.02, hull speed of 6.63 + a very respectable capsize ratio of 1.77 so I’m happy with it. The boats that seem to be coming down in price are all the pre-90’s boats. Nobody wants cramped quarters + slower boats without modern amenities even if they are arguably the safer option like mine.

The 37 is an incredible value Jeanneau made it a perfect couples boat . Many have cruised the world successfully. Stiff enough and stable with a good turn of speed . The Catalina is a bay and near coastal only . She has cheap fittings and was always built to a price . But given the dire straits that is coming to the boating market perfect and cheap for protected waters cruising like the Chesapeake Bay or Narragansett Bay and over to the islands . She is Not offshore in any way .
@RulgertGhostalker4 күн бұрын
the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37 is pretty close to decent performance in an ocean goer though. but affording a top quality composter, ( so it gets lighter as it goes ), de-sal to reduce the passage loading water weight, and low stretch sails that remain at peak efficiency.....i guess de-sal weight you would have to think of as gallons less water....then how much less weight if just enough water to repair the de-sal.........but all that's completely out side my budget if I had one. but the first thing is up on the hard long enough to dry it out, and seal it up... more money past sale.....but, if one could afford it.
