We've had a Bristol 43 for 11 years. This is the first center cockpit I have owned. A few things about them besides the kids and pets that need to be mentioned. The aft cabin with a center queen bed and head with a separate shower that I can stand in at 6'2" is awesome. The aft deck is also a big plus. We have friends with a Catalina 42 (one of your favorites and a great boat) and Hunter 40.5. We can carry a large ice chest and bikes while they a looking for places to put them. When grilling the chef is out of the way of the cockpit on our boat. I have sailed all kinds of boats. I can tell you through experience that a boat like a Bristol, Hinckley, Swan, Little harbor is much more comfortable offshore in a seaway than a lightweight boat such as a Beneteau, etc. Yes, they can all cross oceans, it's just a matter of how comfortable you want to be.

Love this reply you’ve made some great observations I especially like the point you make about having that shall we at extra deck at the back I especially like the Amels sentorini and Maramu as that have a rear bathing deck behind the cockpit. But can I ask do you think as a center cockpit owner that you loose the openness of a rear cockpit when you sitting in the sun ? It looks to me that possibly the Amels look so deep maybe it’s that difference ? I’d really appreciate your opinion Thanks 👍
@captainsview3303 Жыл бұрын
@@sailingyoumeandjosapea6770 No, you have the same sun as a rear cockpit, you just aren't in the rear of the boat. Also, many CC's now have stern swim platforms. The nice thing with them is when you get out of the water you don't get the cockpit wet.

With a U-shape galley, you can clip a seat belt on either side of the stove (or against the side counter top). That allows you to lean back into the sling and keep both hands free. Gravity and leverage will keep you from bouncing around.

Here's a possible video topic: If you spend X on a boat: What improvements, fixes, replacements will you need to do and spend to bring it up to 'standard?' And that 'standard' can be: weekend sail-er, a coastal (& Caribbean) cruiser, cross oceans. Even new boats need things. I'll bet there are some terrific $30k boats being offered for $50k that probably only need $5k work, while similar boats selling for $30k need $10 to 20k (I'm sure unless you just let the boat yard do it all you're going to save money with the cheaper boat. For the record I've got a $170k Hunter 45' with all the extras, watermaker, Hydrovane, etc...without hesitation, I passed on a $130k 45 footer. ) Is a B&R rig really that limited downwind? What I've noticed is that no one really likes to go straight down wind, Wing on wing seems to be a pain. Admittedly, I don't have that much experience, but I do have a B&R rig! and man that in mast furling sure makes life easy. And if the Selden and B&R don't sail as well as.... my 45' seems to make up for it. Ten days ago I annoyed my instructor, when we happened to be the only two boats off the coast at the same time. I didn't see much of his 38 footer and then not for long.) And yep the Selden really does make handling the main a lot easier. The real kicker is a power winch. I first thought, 'only one?' but I can run everything off of it and I do. Trying to unfurl/furl the main or even the jib by hand takes a long long time. So anyone who learns on a 22' then charters a 28 footer and thinks this is more work; then when they charter a 32 and it seems to be even more work? Just save up for a power winch. Key to livability is not just the saloon space and all those pretty couches, it's that there are at least two completely separate spaces onboard -- so you can get away from each other. (I was once sent on a long trip so my partner could see what it was like without me. Apparently it was good. But generally the problem may not be the other person (after all you did become a couple), it's the other person ALL the time. So bigger boats are not only faster they're more conducive to happiness at sea.)

I've never heard of B&R spars... Is B&R a brand of spars or is it a type of rig? Is it a Hunter only brand?
@WillN2Go12 жыл бұрын
@@EuroThrashDude I might not have this correct but a B&R rig [patented by Swedish aeronautical engineers Lars Bergström and Sven Ridder It employs swept spreaders that are usually angled aft] is common on catamarans. Fore stay - normal, no back stay, instead side stays are back a bit making it a 'tripod' of three 120 deg separation, instead of four stays (90 degrees). Used on cats it allows for a roached (wider squared top) main sail. And when I tried a wing on wing in a different boat it was way more trouble than it was worth. But I was a rookie. Instructors and other sources instead recommend a broad reach and occasional gybe. Looking for angled aft spreaders is a reliable way to find all the catamarans in a marina.

Did you know that the Hinchley 38 hulls were built in Canada? Hughes Boatworks built the S&S designed hulls for their 38 footer and sold bare hulls to Hinchley for their 38. We own a Bristol 41.1, the baby sister to the one you showed and can attest to the quality of the build. Very well thought out and executed perfectly by Bristol Yachts.

I have wondered for a while why you limit boat lengths to about 45 feet. I have single-handed boats up to 50 feet. Then, we were coming in to anchor at night on and Oyster 485 with a reef 150 feet to port, 4 boats at anchor in our path with no lights, and the anchor pin was bent to the point that 2 people with crowbar and sledge were forward to free the ROCNA. For 5 minutes, I would have preferred a 22 foot boat with a small anchor in a hold that could be thrown over the side. I mostly like larger boats. And I love the Swans. But the Swan 57 even has me thinking that it provides crew quarters for a reason. I am boat shopping. And I know that I will likely be solo sailing a lot. Also, I question my ability to handle the larger sails without electric winches. Oh the difficulty of the many compromises when choosing a boat.

Hate to disagree with you but those WW II landing craft were designed by Andrew Higgins. That's why they were called Higgins boats. Ike, himself, credited him with winning the Battle at Normandy Beach.
@jeffrobnc1971 Жыл бұрын
@cecilpacetti1491 You are correct in that the Higgins boats (which were water-only boats and *not* amphibious) were designed by Andrew Higgins. However, the DUKW (a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the 2+1⁄2-ton CCKW truck) pictured in this video was designed by Sparkman & Stephens. The Higgins boats, not DUKWs, were the boats shown in the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan". I cannot recall any movie featuring DUKWs, but they were re-purposed for city tours in recent years. Search the web for "DC Ducks", which used DUKWs for DC tours up about 2019, when the DUKWs were retired due to lack of spare parts and safety concerns.

For this price I’ve been looking at Amel Sentorin around 1996 But you’ve shown me some other really nice center cockpit boats. A BnR Rig on a Centre Cockpit boat seems like a stange thing to do. One of the things a Centre Cockpit doesn't have to compromise on is the location of a traveller in the ideal location, the end of the boom, behind and out of the cockpit. But, a Centre Cockpit in a boat that isn't intended to cross oceans is also strange to me too, especially if you're in hot climates 'island hopping' where you may want to spend most of your time in the cockpit; aft cockpit would provide a better experience. Makes sense if, as you pointed out, you want to maximize security, or really want to have a large aft cabin, and have A/C I guess. Swans are lovely boats, no question. Not sure what the crew compliment would need to be for that one!

The Bermuda 40 is considered (by many, not all) the most beautiful production boat of all time. The grace of its sheer is unmistakeable and its performance in the cruiser/racer segment is undeniable. Unfortunately, for the crowd looking for livability on long passages, the B-40 just doesn't meet modern standards of interior layout and space utilization. The reason this boat doesn't sell for a heck of a lot more is because the primary demographic is the Yacht Club Captain that does not live aboard and wants a design with pedigree that can give a spirited performance in club racing or regattas while also being big enough to make the Newport to Bermuda trip.

That Hinckley gives me the impression she should be owned by someone who could afford a 300k boat but wants this classy style. Like a classic Mercedes from the '70-s - you must be wealthy enough to give her what she takes to really shine. And just like the old Mercedes, if the point is really to live on it and go to places, her disadvantages start to show more. She is a beautiful vacation boat, even if she was designed to sail you around the world. At least, that's how I would use her.

Even the Hunter Passage 42 which clocks in at 26,000 pounds is rated by you and your sailing buddies as too light weight and all the other boats in that size range you rate as so good as they are nice and heavy even though they are in the 13,000-15,000 pound category.
