FROM THE VAULT: Back in June of 2016, we traveled to Flagstaff, Arizona to catch Bernard Lagat, Sam Chelanga, Abdi Abdirahman and Stephen Sambu get after 400m repeats at 7,000ft. Marcellus Jones I did a 9 x 400 at 80 seconds with 15 second rest before. Then like a week after I could barely do it at 90, I don’t know how I did it at 80.

Andy Zamfir yeah it’s mainly for sprinting endurance like if you want to run the 800 and the 1600. For track it could be more like 6 x 400 at 70 with 15 seconds rest. Also for cross country you could do 20 x 400 at 95 but continuous.

@@pandachong7942 ah i kinda getchu, for speed endurance i usually do 300 @ 48sec, 200 @ 48 sec then 300 @ 48 as one 800 rep, the have like a 5 min recovery haha

On the same altitude in Kenya, we did 7 by 600m at 1:36 and 10 by 400m at 63s. We would walk for a 100m m and jog the remaining 100m. Between the 600m and the 400m, we had a lap jog. This was in late Feb 2020. Just that ours is a dirt track. The last lap was 59 seconds. It is unfortunate that most of the runners in the group haven't got the opportunity.

Lagat damn near old enough to be their father, and he's still putting that work in!

Did you know that Lagat would still have to keep himself in shape till his 70's or 80's in order to beat the sub 253 marathon record for a 78 year old male. Some people just refuse to grow old. It is all in the mind as they say.

Lagat is the BOSS! He's 44 and running sub-60 400s at altitude. Setting age world records like 2:12 for M40-45 at the marathon a couple of months ago!

I'm wondering what the purpose of this particular workout is. Even at altitude, 65 second quarter miles, and 62 second quarter miles, are pretty pedestrian paces for these guys. What is the physiological aim of repeats at a relatively slow but still Up Tempo Pace with a short rest?

cause you don’t have to overwork yourself all the time, this pace is perfect for a mid-long distance track workout. This is how they do it in East African countries as well, and that’s exactly ehy they’re the best. This is what the West has to realize if they’re to ever catch up

The purpose is to beat the next mf in a race 65 second 400 is a lot of ppls sprint pace. They are at 70 percent... and 8 times is a lot and that's not even the full day they probably did core after

A 3:38 1500m Runner I used to train with ran 12x400 off 45 seconds in around 60s. He also ran 7:58 for 3k. He probably could have run 3:33 though. He was super talented.

Ry Cooder he could have gone faster there too but didn’t race much over that distance. I was impressed by the time because I was a 400/800 runner so it was otherworldly to me. This was 15 years ago in Australia so you wouldn’t recognize the name. He won the 2005 Melbourne 1500m Track classic. So you could look up the name if you’re curious.

@@zber9043 sure..tell me name! I ran in early '80s....my training partner was a 13:19 5k guy...Duncan Macdonald...Hawaii (or kenya if you are Trump). I knew Kevin Ryan if that rings bell. 3:38 1500 is great n so are your 400s. You say you were a 400m 800m runner? Gteat 1500 for a 400m runner! My fav workout was 300m...something fast about them. I was training at UC Berkeley once...and John Walker was training there one day..2 yrs after his gold medal...watched him run 4:05 mile in workout....track was busy w all college guys but I did 300 n 400s alone..Walker was watching so he asked if I could pace him thru 4:20 mile.....with 70m to go (after even 65 pace) he comes even w my shoulder and just blasted!!! Not being a gold medalist all I could do is think "wow"! He was a very nice guy..and came up after to talk a bit. Good memory....

Wait a minute....this workout was in Arizona...not 7500ft....at start of film they list location n "two sets of 400m" in 65 then 64(?).... With 45 sec rest.... I have done 20 X 300 w 100jog but dont know how long 100jog took. Cant say I understand purpose of close times w break.... Ovett would run 400s at pace but try n get pace down to 57sec...meaning he could pace 57 w idea he could keep going
