Monday, a buddy showed up out of the blue from pennsylvania (I'm in Texas) we found this at a hole in the wall store around the corner from my house. It's spectacular! A surprise visit from one of my favorite people in the world and a bottle of distillers edition... Best day I've had in years. Thanks Steven!

I have to thank you Magnificent Bastards for helping me explore the world of whiskey more and more. I am more of a bourbon guy myself with a modest collection of around 15 bottles or so. Recently the Mrs. has poured me a small pour of a bourbon at random to see if I can guess the bottle. Just a few years ago I could barely get passed the alcohol taste to find any tasting notes of substance, but now with regularity I can pick out many of my standard pours by nose alone.

In terms of availability, every MAJOR liquor store chain I’ve been to carries this, and every other one can easily get it. However... where Lagavulin 16 can be had for $55-65, Distillers Edition is usually around $105-130. I think it’s worth the price jump, but I’m not sure everyone will.

Flagrant ommission! Admittedly Lagavulin 16 is the only Islay Scotch I have ever tasted, but to leave out the primary tasting note of iodine and bandaid seems to be bordering on malpractice. When I first tried it, I tasted the wonderful smoke, which I enjoyed, followed by the lingering iodine and rubber that I couldn't scrub out of my mouth for the next few hours. Is this something that just goes away after you get accustomed to peaty whiskys? I loved the smoke but hated the iodine and rubber. Is there a smokey whiskey that doesn't have these things? If not, I will be content with my bourbon and enjoy watching you guys enjoy the peaty spirits from across the pond.

I detect distinct differences in Daniel's behavior, first he seems happier than a pig in slop, rolling in the mud, second he scuttles about the vault like a meth'd up Hobbit searching for his precious all the while suddenly able to produce a comparison as easily as Dumbledore as Rex mugs it up having successfully mooched his way back. Then watching Rex frantically try to keep the segment on a coherent arc with places for elegant cuts is of course Gold! Transitions and segways sometimes are in desperate need of Basil Exposition such as the transition of Mary Sue Rex to Rex American Samuri, but I digress. The size of the vault making it difficult for Rex to exploit Daniel's personal safe space issues, perhaps a set piece behind Daniel so it would restrict his tendency to break into interpretive hobbit folk dance, but taste is subjective. That is not to say the segment was in way anything, but great, always enjoy learning something and laughing as I do, life is too short, the world is hard and mean, so never pass on a chance to laugh and remember we got each other you bastards. Balls busted! It is the way! I have spoken!

I also really like the Michter's American. The only problem I have is finding it (in PA in the USA). Shops are more miss than hit, and bars, ever one's with a good selection, are usually a miss as well. Everyone has the rye, and some have the bourbon. The whiskey is annoyingly hard to find. Need to get more into the Lagavulin eventually.

And? What notes did you get?
@jimdgrousedogs5 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsitaud9743 I got spearmint, light sweet honey, black pepper, and briny peat more like Talisker rather than smokey peat like Ardbeg or Laphroaig. I can also tell with the finish that it was matured in sherry casks. Earlier this year I was in a honey store and tried about 10 different honeys. This whisky reminded me of the lighter tasting honey compared to clover honey I find around here. The first time I tried Lagavulin 16 I loved it. Once I got past the peat there was so much complexity. The Distillers Edition has all the complexity, plus sweet notes from the sherry cask.
