Late 60s early 70s Maori youth were becoming more self aware, our parents trusted the white man when he told them their children would be better off living in the white world. Reggae struck a chord with Maori who identified with the pain and suffering of the rasta. Colonisation, language lost, cultural practices outlawed theft of homelands, lands that our ancestors fought and died for and many cases won we always maintain we were conquered by the pen not the gun. As was earlier shared Maori not only had physical connection to the land but spiritual connection Reggae carried the language of revolution, resist injustice fight for what is right and we still are God was in the message, sadly our youth use the beat to sing about phileo love and not the agape kind. The beat expresses the heart and emotion lyrics carry the message
