Bittersweet I’m still in disbelief. Lahaina town is where we would go when we didn’t go back to my island of Okinawa, about every other year or more, for many years. So many memories of surfing, eating, shopping and just walking around town. Luckily, we had the chance to take our three kids and their significant others the November before the fire and now, it’s gone. I hope it gets rebuilt with the same charm that it had, but that will be tough. My wife and I watched it burn while we were on our trip in Okinawa. Thank you for the updates.

Your videos are always uplifting despite what has taken place. Slowly but surely the Banyan Tree is coming back to life. Just like Lahaina will. They both are going to be different and I have a good feeling about what changes are coming. I'm curious about the sail boat that is sitting at a tilt. I'm surprised it hasn't been removed. Thank you as always for your inspired gift. 😎🦀🌺🙏🌴

Public Works and Army Corps of Engineers have been very concerned with runoff. BMPs (=best management practice) which are the long tube like objects surrounding clean ups have been instrumental in these efforts and the National Weather Service attends all of the debris removal meetings to alert the teams if any weather systems are approaching which could dump rain.

I was there shortly before the fire. We walked down those streets, went to the shopping area, ate at Captain Jack's and it was so fun, the people were kind, and the culture... it kills me to see it like this. It's the first time I've seen an area where I've been so devastated like this. Edit: *some months, before the fire.

So sad to see. We ate dinner there on the rooftop at Fleetwood in April of 2023 and shopped at all the shops along Front street. To see it all cleared away and vacant land now is hard to comprehend as it seems like we were just there.

My husband and I visited Lahaina a few years before the fire. Can you tell me where was the location of the Asian Museum, which we recall being on Front Street. We so much enjoyed going through the two-story building with the attached outside cooking area. The Asian lady, who was so kind to give us a tour, allowed us to go upstairs to see the beautiful offering table and artifacts. So sad to hear everything is gone...so thankful we took so many pictures and videos to be able to reflect on.

You beat it to it! I was trying to imagine what circumstances would have to happen for that vessel to still be there. Perhaps salvage companies are not yet allowed close enough to retrieve it. When a vessel runs aground, the owner/s are (usually) given a specific amount of time to retrieve the vessel before salvage companies are allowed to retrieve it.

Maui Mayor attends meetings with head of the planning department. They are requesting major shoreline management assessments and wanting buildings moved back from the ocean. This will now take 2 years if Lahaina Strong doesn’t try to delay further. Is the Mayor doing the bidding of Lahaina Strong so he doesn’t have to face resignation or getting voted out?The settlement deal could fail over this man’s actions. That puts Maui County at risk of bankruptcy. The above is why there isn’t a lot of new construction. Should the Mayor be charged with negligent manslaughter?

Consider how long the initial survey, demolishing a building or home, plus clearing and leveling ground can take on a single large residence or commercial structure (if you've never been in the industries, just consider how long you drove past some construction sites). Then consider this required clearing out nearly 1,400 structures including larger commercial ones, environmental remediation etc. and all of it using public dollars, which tends to take longer than private, and on an island with minimal infrastructure. Given all those facts I would say the army corps and everyone else did a pretty good job. Thinking it could all be rebuilt in a year is frankly not realistic. To be clear: I know people from Lahaina and consider this a tragedy. But we need to stay grounded in reality. I hope it's rebuilt as soon as possible

I can hardly look at this, so sad. I have been going there for 30 years. We have a family condo in the Mahana, on the other side. Everything is good over there, no guests. The condo is worth nothing now. My in-laws are very old now. I think 50 years. I guess folk's that lost their houses and businesses, stayed in the condo, until they we're thrown out. I went down to front street, every night. Fished out of that harbor so many times. Did the boat's all get out? does anyone know if a boat called the Exact got out of the harbor. Where did the boats move too. These people have been screwed. People in Maui are not rich, at all. Most of the residences were handed down. Hawaiians are super family oriented. They have really great get-togethers. Dig a whole out back and burry a pig. Good eats. Paradice beach. Hanna! I won't go Back. Sorry, just thoughts.
