My first summer performing in Ibiza in 2000 I wasn’t really a DJ yet, but did live shows with my own tracks, played some keys on top of prepared background “tape” (was two CDs with drums + bass & synths + rest layers of my tracks), brought in & filtered stuff and triggered loops and effects from a sampler and I sort of knew what to do there. What I didn’t know how to do was DJ with whatever players and mixers when Dave Pearce kindly asked me to DJ at his day party at Savannah. I took the slot, though, and fucked up beautifully in not one but TWO ways: First, it was a sunny day and the CD players were the Pioneer 100s, the silver ones with effects on it. Dave I guess had used the Jet (flange) effect, which DOES have a flashing blue light when engaged, but I didn’t see it in the bright Ibiza sun. When I was trying to beatmatch, I ended up trainwrecking the first couple of tracks, bad, on that side, because nudging with the wheel didn’t do anything and any effect on the sound it would’ve had was so little that I didn’t hear and realize the effect was on, until several wrecks later. Man I felt small. 🤦🏻‍♂️ So I figured it out at some point, then was ok for a while except that Dave’s mixer was a Urei or a Rane, and I only knew Pioneer 500/600 at that point. I had learned to mix in my headphones and the big difference was that you couldn’t listen to master channel and cue channel at the same time, like on the Pio mixer I had, so I had cues pressed down on both incoming & outgoing tracks. That was all fine and dandy until I turned around to my CD case to pick the next track… Turned back, saw the crowd looking at me weird… I had a party in my headphones, full blast, but taking off the headphones I heard almost crickets: My headphone cable had pulled the master down really low, I heard people chat with normal voice… 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Suffice to say I though that was it, messing up that bad in the Mecca of dance music, my career had just ended before it started. I can laugh about it today, then I just wanted to disappear, was soooo embarrassed.

I once played a house set to an RnB and hip-hop crowd at a party (of course at this point still had no idea what music they wanted despite asking the owner multiple times) . Anyway, they decided to tell me to stop playing and asked if they could play their Spotify playlist instead.

One of my biggest fails that hit me hard was when I started to do clubs and I played all the hype and new tracks in the beginning of my set. That was a huge lessons learned. Ever since then, I mastered the opening set before going into the main set.

Wow, studying a club's genre is definitely something I often forget. One more tip could be if you can then keep your don't produce and DJ on the same laptop, get 2 separate laptops. A friend of mine once lost all his productions because some drunk person crashed into his laptop while performing.

I know you covered this in an older vlog, but getting booked at the wrong party hurts af. Back in 2017 I got booked to play a club in a different city, and the promoter that booked me did not research the genre that I was playing ( I was an EDM, Future House kinda of DJ), and the party was an afrobeats party, with the headliner being a pretty big name in France in this genre. Fast forward 15 minutes into the set I had to go off the both, because the crowd didn't respond well to the music I was playing. Fortunately, I still got paid for the hotel and travel expenses, but that hurt me on so many different levels tho 🤣🤣

Nice. Same here ... afro house / organic / progressive / melodic house / techno dj booked for an afro beat event ..... thankfully I was doing a b2b with a friend of mine..... I only played 2 hours out of a 7 hour event. But the client was cool, and we still got paid. He never called me back for any other event tho 😂😂😂 And yeah, it's easy to get discouraged and start questioning ur life choices when u get requests that only the other dj can grant ... but I kept my cool . My mind set was pretty much this: this is not ur crowd. Don't worry about it . Stay cool, stay professional, keep smiling

Great tips Luke, thank you for sharing! One DJ fail I will never forget is walking through the airport in Toronto with my bright red vinyl flight case in tow which had a bunch of blatant counter culture stickers all over it, which screamed to the customs officials and airport security to pull me aside and search through absolutely everything I was carrying. This made my airport experience quite negative, and last a lot longer than it should have. On top of this I did not get a temporary work permit to let me DJ in Canada over the weekend, and on my way back through the airport a few days later, the custom's official said I could have been arrested and fined for not having a work permit. In retrospect I was not thinking clearly enough how to make my DJ travel a lot more comfortable and expedient for me.

My biggest DJ fail happened when I was playing my first house party and I kept pushing the controller further and further into the red so I could hear the speakers over peoples singing until my equipment shut down on me. I went outside to cool off while my equipment recovered and I came back about 15 or 20 minutes later and started playing again. The room had cleared out a bit by the time I got back but much to my surprise (and releif) as soon as I started tapping the cue button to test the volume people started cheering and before long the room filled up again and the party kept getting better as the night went on. But I learned a valuable lesson about audio that night hahaha. Great to hear you talk about your mistakes too. It's nice for us to hear the pros we look up to aren't perfect either

in my most recent liveset I forgot that the fader of the 2nd deck was still full open, (I faded out with a filter, and forgot to take the fader down) So when I was pre cueing the 2nd deck It went full blast trough the livemix 😮‍💨. I really wanted to end the recording there but I kept playing, because in a club you cant stop either.

Only halfway through the video, so I might repeat things you said. Just wanted to make a list of mistake I've made (mostly early in my career) that were huge lessons: - BRING AN EXTRA WIRE FOR EVERYTHING. Equipment will break. It's inevitable. - Scheduling and then forgetting about a meeting with a bride & groom. I did this one time, and never will again. An organized schedule is one of the most important parts of your job as a DJ. - Having mislabeled songs. Finding out you played the dirty version of a song can be a nightmare if you're in the wrong environment for that. - GET INSURANCE FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT. Drunk people are generally reckless idiots. - What you want to hear isn't always what they want to hear. - I show up psychotically early for gigs. About an hour and a half early. I like to be comfortable and take my time so I'm in the right headspace when I get the party started!

Such good tips! When ever I make mistakes I just laugh at it, own it and pretend I meant to do that and move on quickly. Smile and vibe with the crowd. Yea good idea to not out shine the headliner either especially if your a warm up or opening up Dj because you wanna leave the bangers for the headliner. That’s why I love to play the closing set, but yeah you wanna not double play songs. ✌️

Hi Luke! Totally can relate-when the track is running out….phrasing right? I use DJPRO as well and it works great for phrasing loops. I too was a Denon Dj and I use a stand alone my IPAD now I don’t use Traktor anymore, have been using Rekordbox for USB stuff but have a couple of gigs coming up that are like 5 or 6 hour sets. I have most of my music on my IPAD and am wanting to set this up on the club decks instead of using the usbs and I want to use Dj Pro because these are such long sets and I’ve gotten super comfortable with the software. Do you think it would be too much to ask the promoter if I could set up my I pad and use the decks as a controller? From what I’m seeing with the new technology in decks or standalones is the touch screen technology. And what better of a touch screen than the IPad and the M2 processor is the most amazing processor we know right now not to mention having 2 TB of storage for amazing wave files or even streaming if I feel so inclined or can’t find a song. I don’t usually stream while playing a gig but am not opposed to it. What do you do? Is that not a possibility? You use DJ PRO right?? Would greatly appreciate your advise! Congrats on the sobriety! One last note on that topic is: I think it’s ok to regularly check out the vibe at the club you wanna Dj at and get to know the other Djs promoters bartenders etc. but don’t get wasted there especially in front of the promoter or resident djay you’ll blow your chances of them calling you for another gig. ✌️

3:58 its so true. If the house or festival mixer is clipping youll sound bad and you'll be more quiet because the internal compressors are working that you won't have digital clipping... If the soundguy turns you up on his desk youll be much louder. But thanks for addressing this problem 👏🏽 on the pioneer mixers you can also enable a feature in de Club settings that 0db will be -6db on the master.

Ive been there. Just use these incidents to improve yourself. Just step back, think what happened. What can you do to make sure that doesnt happen again. I have a fixed process now. All Hot Cue types are colour coded. Ie Drops are Red. Vocals Yellow etc. And before i mix to the next track i sweep my hands down the channel looking at all filters to make sure Centered or where they need to be, then im Go for the mix. Talking in my head as i go through the process. Thats something i learned from Luke.

A friend of mine was djing before me one night and he had asked if he could play a certain track of mine and I was totally cool with it. I was in the crowd listening to his set and once it was about time to switch over I went up to the stage and he hadn't played my track yet, so I figured he had gone another direction. I was all set up and ready take over the decks, he just had one more track. I was bouncing with him up on stage and he was getting his applause and he signals to the crowd "1 more" and then he drops my track. It was such a surprise because at that point I was focused on beginning my set. It totally worked and I ended up mixing into that track myself and making an on the fly remix. It was an if you know you know moment and ending up being a really fun way to start. It all happened so quickly I didn't have time to think so my set ended up being really fresh and fun for me since I would have never started that way myself. Moments like that are really special and make it all worth while.

Hey, don't be embarrassed ever. That stuff happens. We live, we learn. And when you do this all the time, it's like, of course at times stuff happens. But being late, that's one that causes us all issues if we stick to that schedule. I try to go early to shows to support the other artists and feel relaxed. Like when you're about to fly somewhere. Being there early, you get bored, but being late, you stress. So I get it, but definitely get there early anytime you can. Vibing tracks, definitely necessary. Sometimes tracks don't hit the way we want for the crowd. But we observe, and change shit to be more appealing. Redlining, I handle it myself. I bring the individual gains down while bringing up the master. Clip free, and stays same volume with little notice about the change in decibels. I make sure any artists I play with, I look through and pull any stuff with their name on it. Cause that's an easy way to irritate another artist if they plan their sets very specifically and you play a track they are trying to play. When it comes to drops, if I mess up, I wait another bar or two, so I can drop it again, even if off, in a dramatic way. Never play with laptops, that can be a death sentence if you aren't thinking about all factors and if you don't have a purpose laptop for playing music. If you have to, just do your thing and do what you can. When you accidentally load a deck on the wrong one, I just immediately start the next track. I know everyone may hear it, and possibly notice, but a fast recovery can definitely save the set. I also turn off crossfaders because I'm not a scratch dj, so that avoids that issue. And yes, never be too intoxicated. You can enjoy yourself, but remember, you're there for a reason. You need to be able to perform to the abilities they expect, or better. If you can't, you done messed up. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, just totally relate to all this.

I think my biggest fail was when my needle skipped right before the best part of conjure one - tears from the moon (tiesto remix) on a festival stage. turns out putting my turntable on my snake case wasnt quite sturdy enough for skrillex levels of jumping around lol also, about talking to the sound guy (thats my main job, not djing) seriously just come ask us for a little more dynamic range. that shows us that you actually care about your sound quality and wont be trying to blow up our horns with redlining, and we are likely to give you all the volume we can legally muster. DJs have a reputation of being careless and blowing speakers, thats why we put limiters on you. show us you care, and we don't need to do that as much.

Two fails I recall from my "career", that I wrapped up a few years back to focus on production and live performance. The first: we were running a popular bi-weekly house night at Somewhere in Melbourne, building a growing, committed audience. I wasn't really a house DJ, so I usually opened up with downtempo, IDM and breaks, but at the end of each night, we'd often 1 or 2 track B2B2B with whoever the 3-4 DJs were for the night. This particular night was the peak of our series, with the dancefloor packed and excited, and the best of vibes. The B2B2B2 started well, but for my next turn, I heard something I thought worked in my headphones - almost amusingly - and I mixed it in. It was a disaster, the wrong genre, the wrong vibe, and the dancefloor emptied, as my DJ buddy hurriedly tried to mix out of it. The series was never quite the same after that - it seemed to turn a lot of the regular heads off from coming again. The other fail was at a warehouse party, also in Melbourne, a monthly series where I'd been a strong opener the past few of them. One month, I was rewarded with the prime time / peak set, and put weeks of effort into the set: buying new tracks, listening to them countless times, and practicing. On show night, packed house, it was my turn. I set up my USB with the new tracks on one CDJ, and prepared for an epic set. However, at the same time, this blonde girl near the front speaker, put her bulky bag down in a corner, and this action seemingly disconnected the CDJ's power cable. None of the promoters or sound crew were anywhere in sight, and with mere minutes remaining, I had to use my backup USB in the other CDJ - all old tracks, mostly dubstep. Suffice it to say, I lasted about 2-3 uninspired, frustrated and not well mixed tracks into my set, before I received the first and only hook of my life. Very embarrassing! Should have had the new tracks on another USB as a backup.

Few mistakes i made before: - Playing scratched CD-s, so the song is jumping all the time - Using only headphones to monitor the sound, and only i was hearing the next track, because i forget to put up the volume on the channel - puting the headphone on the play button, and the song stopped - one time i played a song twice, because i had the wrong tracklist on the wrong CD - MP3 playing deck freezed mid set - Laptop started lagging while using effects on the controller

I played a 2h set, can't remember one minute of it. Listened to it next day, mixing was "OK'ish" but I played the same track's several times within the 2 hours. Mind you, the crowd was probably drunker than I was, coz they did not care that much, but I haven't been drinking that heavy since. I literally can't remember a second of the set, I blacked out totally, so at the decks there was only my subconsciousness and muscle memory :D

Laidback Luke, thank you so much 😅😅😅 you make me laughing. I remember No.1 fail playing in the late 90s Klubbheads „Discohopping“ 3 times and yes man, I was to drunk too 😅

I never drink when mixing. It takes all control away. If something happens you need to improvise very quickly and think about what next. Scratch, loop, few words on mix with delay, whatever works. Some technical issues are beyond the control.

You are right. Sound guys hate it when dj's play in red and/or don't play at constant volume. You make big friends talking to them and know what you are doing.

Loaded a track into the wrong deck twice while I was playing a house party, so glad it was dark or everyone would have seen how red I turned. Feels a little better that even a pro makes those mistakes too. Thanks Luke :)

One time I had a b2b with a friend of mine, we got so drunk we mixed a track with the same track on the 2nd cdj... to top it off, we mixed the same track a third time 10m later. But hey, lesson learned! xD

My biggest blunders are forgetting to bring that bass back in, and accidentally moving that crossfader, since I'm in Canada a lot of times the event is outside and it's still kind of chilly so you got to have a jacket on and sometimes that cuff pushes the crossfader when you move your hand across the mixer.

Oh snap 😮😮😮 yeah that sux. I decided a long time ago never to use the crossfader (always kill it) on the hardware or the software) to prevent this from happening. Which works out fine for me, cuz being a deep house dj, I can manage without it

Hitting the wrong hotcue, and jumping back to the intro instead of the 2nd drop, or something like that. Gets me every time. Or when you mess up the gain completely, and you only recognise when you are mixing in the track, and turn up the bass, and you hit the limiter like crazy. That also doesn't sound too well, plus it also makes you look like an amateur :D

I just wanna add to the first tip- on top of having a spare channel/cdj I will try to have an aux channel with phone sound (or an analog device that plays music) as an emergency backup, because I’ve had the “3rd extra cdj” go bad, even then the 4th could glitch. So having something outside of all that makes it so you never have silence no matter what

I once drop my external hard drive at a gig setting up. The tracks would only play half the song. Quickly got the sound guy to put on a mix. Jumped in a taxi to go home a grab a two bags of wax to finish off the night. I ended up getting paid an extra tip on top of my fee from the manager.

I will never forget one night I ejected the wrong track, as soon as I hit that damn button I knew my mistake and immediately started laughing so loud it sounded like a witch'ss cackle.... so instead of a moment of silence the club was filled with my superhero villain laugh for a brief moment before I hit play on the CDJ and got the music back.

People read into things to much if your a professional dj (whatever that really means) or your good at mixing and talking to crowds that’s good for you..but me I’m happy with just having the decent equipment and the ability to select the tunes that can make most of the crowd happy..I’ve played music to large crowds plenty of times 300-500 over the years and observed many of them cheering and dancing and smiling ect ect..there’s always going to be the odd few that don’t like your selection but it’s one of those things you will very rarely please everyone..I don’t really mix I fade tunes into one another most of the time and try and keep it to the same bpm..I also use fx and my voice to vibe up the atmosphere..the feedback I’ve got from the crowds and promoters has usually been fine..and I play most genres depending on what the crowd is ..reggae, hip hop, soca, afrobeats, house, techno, rock, and funky jazz I think I’m a good and balanced music player and most people could be if they really wanted to..just follow your dreams and don’t get overly nervous...and don’t let professional disk jockey’s (whatever that is) try and make you think your skills are not up to the job..I’ve seen to much snobbery and egos out there.

My most embarrassing moment for me, I was playing a small festival to about 800-1000 people, it was a super late night set, about 40mins in, I dead dropped (loading a track on the deck thats playing). fair to say i was very embarrassed.

Not a DJ, but a Guy who works at Festivals/In the Club. The "Always Have a Backup" Rule works wonders. I can't tell you how often I lost something, because we didn't have a backup. I accidentally killed the Front of House (The Mixing and Lighting control Area) Once as well. Luckily, that was early enough, so that it wasn't too bad. But that reminded me of that "Always have a backup" Rule. Since then I always have at least a Idea of what to do if something fails. And there is nothing worse, than struggeling to fix some gear, while there is no Sound. Just play something. That is almost always better than nothing.
