Doug, the work you did here on your engine house area is outstanding and something to be proud of. It takes a lot of work and patient to achieve that level of detail and realism. Great work! My favorite scene is when you have the roundhouse in the foreground and the UP photograph backdrop in the background. Its hard to tell if its real or a model scene. Again great job and thanks for sharing.

I am fascinated by your maintenance area. I have a turntable and some features but not entirely sure how to place them or what they do specifically. Thanks for sharing your layout. I am building in HO scale. Also could you show your sand transfer set up again a little closer? I may have to do something similar on my layout.
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man I used a lot of books to figure out whereto place all the stuff, but when it came down to it, they had to go where they fit. I wish we had 6'-8' of straight track leading to the TT, but we don't, and what we do have is on a curve. That made it tough. It's not the way I would have like to do it, but we got it all in there, so you just have to use your imagination a bit. I will do the delivery of sand and coal in another video so you can see what I'm talking about.

You have an incredible layout! I'm about to start an expansion to my layout with a turntable and your video gave me some great ideas. I look forward to seeing more of your layout updates. Take a look at my layout when you have a few minutes I would love to get some of your advice.
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
I have seen your videos and had sub'd your channel awhile back. You have tons of detail on your layout.... love all the detail. If you're adding a TT, I assume the expansion will be in another room? You have some big engines so are you going to use a 34" TT? I can tell you it eats up a ton of space. We have an 8' x 8' space for the TT and RH and that is kinda cramped lol
@Building_America10 жыл бұрын
Laidoffsick Thank you for subbing, I'm sorry I didn't realize you did or I would have subbed back. Thank you for your kind words about my layout. Yes, I'm going into the adjacent room which is about 12 x 10. I bought the Ross 36 inch TT and I do plan on having a RH as well. I don't think it is cramped at all, I think it looks perfect! Do you think I will have enough room?
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
Yeah a 12' x 10' space will be perfect for an engine facility with a TT and RH. Just try to get at least a 4' - 6' lead into the TT for all the buildings and stuff. Ours is short and on a curve.... needed more room for that.

Very nicely done. Question: You and Norm Charbonneau use scale Kadee's, which look great, but how do you compensate on diesels for the non-fixed pilot gaps..?

We fill in those gaps and mount the pilots to the frame or shell depending on the engine

Richard Fernandez thank you. 2R never really crossed my mine because I grew up with 3R and there is so much more available in 3R w/o having to convert or kitbash. My dad and I already had too much 3R stuff when we started building the layout. It will be in the next issue of Classic Toy Trains.

In watching all of your layout updates I have one question if you wouldn’t mind. I currently own a Legacy Cab Forward and I really enjoy it. So much so I’m considering multiple articulated’s as my space will allow it. Considering Lionels latest offerings, how do you like that AC-9. The last offering is almost 5 years old from implementation; what is your opinion of that offering? Thank you.
@Laidoffsick4 жыл бұрын
I would buy the Legacy version hands down but their quality control has taken a dump in the last 5 years
@kenmunozatmmrrailroad68534 жыл бұрын
@@Laidoffsick I keep hearing that, and fortunately out of luck my Vegas dealer has had mostly old (new stock) so my Legacy locomotives have been of that iteration. Thanks, I’ll be more open minded of the older equipment as I see prices driven down by interest in the latest tech offerings. Thanks you again, your work at your fathers was amazing.

Thanks for your earlier reply !, also the update on the roundhouse kits you mentioned in this video. You have made EXCELLENT progress on your layout ! How long has the layout been under construction ? Like the Christmas setup & the trains running ! Great shot of that caution mrr at play sign ! Where did you get it ? What is the longest consist of cars you have run on a train ?
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
pjasyl Thank you. We started 2 years and 8 months ago, March 2012. My parents got that sign at a hobby shop somewhere I think, don't remember for sure. You can run 20-30 cars if you want to but that's kind of extreme for this layout, it's really not that big. I would say 10-15 cars is good because you can park them in a siding and run other trains by them.

Dennis Brennan makes the plaster roundhouse kit, and Millhouse River Studios makes the turntables in various sizes. ours is 34" with a 3 stall RH, 4 add on stalls, and the full width extension kit to hold a big boy in every stall.
@buddybenak44388 жыл бұрын
What was the track spacing off the wall on the end of the layout?
@Laidoffsick8 жыл бұрын
track center is 4 1/2" from the wall, and mainlines have 6" center to center so 21" passenger cars and articulated engines have plenty of clearance.
@MsMadmolly10 жыл бұрын
nice job on scenery, who makes the black yard lights and what did you use for dirt? thanks
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
Jessica Inch Those are the MTH flood light towers that I converted to high output LEDs and weathered them from the standard grey color. The dirt is real dirt, mixed with black paint powder to dirty it up.

When is the next update coming?
@Laidoffsick9 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Hartman Well we haven't done much to the layout since the last video. The back of the layout, down on the lower loop is finished now, with tunnels for the reverse loop, and the end that goes underneath the roundhouse.
@crazymanjnorcross110 жыл бұрын
how big is yr yard
@Laidoffsick10 жыл бұрын
Amie Norcross Don't have a yard. No room. It was more important to us to have a large engine facility to showcase all the locomotives, rather than a bunch of cars sitting around on straight track. The 3 tracks towards the front of the layout are just storage tracks in the service area for caboose(s),oil tank cars, water tanker cars, sand hoppers etc etc. Stuff that is needed to service the engines. The room is not big enough to have the appropriate sized yard.

doubleutubefan5 YES if you can find one....or the Lionel Legacy 4449, I have that one too. As far as the cars, Golden Gate Depot made the only accurate set of cars for O scale. I sold my set already and will probably sell the Sunset 4449 too.

Great track plan, attention to detail and beautiful engines. Totally jealous of the layout. By the way, where are the 2900 and 5000 Santa Fe steam engines. I love the UP and SP but, as you know, SF also had some great steam before going diesel. Even if you don't finish the other side, the maintenance yard is a wonder. Keep it going.

Hello Sir, My name is Allan and this is my 1st attempt in trying to give my comments, asking some questions and most of all I try my best to be very honest with the people I try to write to simply because that person could be a fellow member of a Railroad Club. I myself am what some of the people I've met last year would call me and that is a Newbie. That's OK I'm not offended by It In fact I guess they're right. It is true I haven't been around Model Trains since my 13th Birthday. Sir If you don't mind me asking with your layout being as big as It is, How often do you get the chance to dust off all of your Trains, Buildings and the Accessories? Also do you use a lightweight parachute to cover your entire layout from dust? Thank You Sir for taking the time to read my questions and comments. I hope to hear from you soon. My Apologies If I didn't mention to you that I enjoyed parts 1, 2, 4 and #6. Again Sir Thank You for your time Allan
