A gorgeous scene that with excellent storytelling! Plus it’s nice for the people to be accepting and supportive of Kubo’s magic and stories compared to Coraline, Paranorman and The Boxtrolls.

Yeah, which is kind of a breath of fresh air. Most stories in Japan have the townsfolk killing or even burning people that show off this sort of magic unless they're protected by an emperor or feudal lord.

Animating origami so smooth, you'd think it was CG.

I'd say that about the entire film, honestly- the level of precision this studio has with movement and detail is mind boggling.

This kinda begs the question, if it's so smooth and clean that you can't tell whether it's CGI or stop motion, what is the advantage of doing it the hard way? It's not cheaper, it's not faster, it doesn't let you do things you wouldn't be able to do in CG… it's just the bragging rights and "knowing" that you did it the hard way, but the audience has to be told this extra bit of information that's not part of the story or visuals. Would the movie be less good if you didn't know how it was made? Would you be mad if they used CGI on some of these shots?
@tangytablets515011 күн бұрын
@@jobigoud I feel like there's some merit to marketing something as being able to move so smoothly despite being stop-motion. It's an elevation of an art. I don't think it necessarily has to just be a "bragging right" but also proof that something as smooth as this can be done with clay, wire, and paper. And I honestly do believe there is a good deal of charm to the textures and designs of the world when done in a physical medium. like the small fringes of the paper when "cut", the way the cloth looks, and even the shadows on the wrinkles on people. Also, if they did put in some CG to depict certain effects and movements, I honestly wouldn't be mad. Most of it is still dolls and sets, and lighting and the tiny doll/toy appreciator in me just gets tickled by the idea that a lot of these people and monsters and sets physically exist in the real world.

Not only this scene alone must've taken months to animate, but it also screams so much passion, ambition and creativity in the storytelling it almost makes me wanna shed a tear. It seriously pains my heart that both Laika and this movie remain underrated.
