My #1 fashion rule is, clothing doesn’t belong in a dryer. Nothing shortens the life of a piece of clothing faster than throwing it in the dryer. I have fast fashion clothing items that last years due to this.

My fashion rule is to experiment as much as I can with the clothes I already have. I also try not get swayed by trends but instead think about how that trend can fit in my closet and if it actually fits
@RedPandaNinja6886Ай бұрын
Perhaps this is controversial, but I will never buy anything pleather ever again (including jackets, purses, and shoes). Everything that I've owned that's made of PVC leather has disintegrated and had to be thrown away. Most of the leather I own is second-hand, but I would even still much prefer to dish out the money for real leather and have it last me the rest of my life.
@topiesponjaАй бұрын
100% agree! Pleather is also marketed as “vegan leather” which gives it a connotation of being sustainable/better, but it’s actually sooo wasteful if you consider that it will desintegrate after a couple of months/years + generating a ton of microplastics. It just suckssss
@hazar2354Ай бұрын
"Pvc leather" aka plastic
@avioletseaАй бұрын
all of my previous pvc leather jackets started to break at the collar, now i'm waiting to buy an actual leather jacket second-hand instead of getting another one
@BlueyedmetaphoreАй бұрын
Agree on the pleather, but there are some incredible faux leathers emerging made from cactus and other materials that are incredible, my purse from Matt and Nat is now 5 years old and in great condition. After watching the documentary Slay, I don't think I could ever buy leather again.
@smhfroegАй бұрын
same, I always regret buying fake leather. my second hand jacket desintergrated within only a year of active wear and my vegan doc martens aren't as sturdy as the leather boots I had for almost a decade. I would never buy leather new since I am vegan, overallI think it is much more eco friendly this way, the poeces stay sooo much longer. remember to take care for all of your leather goods :)

Everybody is sooo casual now. I go to a fancy restaurant and the men are in tshirts and the women are in cardigans and jeans. It's much easier to be overdressed relative to everyone else and street style is here to stay so I think your mom's rule just doesn't work today, unless you're going to a wedding.
@tressamarie6509Ай бұрын
Honestly I would much rather be overdressed than to appear too casual. Life is my runway and I wear whatever I want, all the time, no matter what… and I basically always want to wear a dress and heels. 😂
@sammiranda516Ай бұрын
I’ve been buying soooo much less clothing recently because these rules: 1. stop buying multiples of the same piece. If I already have x item (say its a white halter top) I ask myself if I like the one I am looking more and if so then I have to get rid of the other one. It’s a really good way to expand your wardrobe without doing huge clean outs and shopping sprees! 2. if its a “maybe” its a no 3. If I want to buy something I have to name multiple items it goes with and the (realistic!) occasion I would wear it. If I can’t do either its a no 4. I ask myself if the item is cute or if its cute for *me*. I think when I was younger I would see an item and recognize it was cute and buy it - and then later realize it’s not even my style. Recognize something can be sooooo cute but cute for someone else lol
@assatuh2582Ай бұрын
These are great ones! If it’s a maybe it’s a no! Def don’t need it that bad. I also like to think “what’s the rush, all the clothes are already here, I can probably find something similar or more me if I keep looking. 🙂↕️

I've been being conscious when buying a new thing, especially proud of myself because if i do come home with 1 rockstar item i get rid of at least 2 things im not wearing at home. Its my way of slowly downsizing my current wardrobe and occasionally getting a new piece im really excited about
@abbyagАй бұрын
Lmao it's so interesting to hear people's perspectives on personal fashion advice. It depends on the age, and even the climate. I dress less cute in the summer than winter months because I'm in Florida and it is so hot all the time I can't be bothered to look cute 😭 But I agree with a ton of these rules
@sanxsana3270Ай бұрын
My fashion rule, if this even counts is I never leave the house in wrinkly clothes. No matter how much time I have I will always make sure to iron everything. I feel like it genuinely ruins your outfit esp if you're wearing like a nice blouse or something. I would think this is common but more often I see ppl not minding that their clothes are wrinkly, which is fine obv but I feel so sad when I see someone wear a nice pair of pants but they're all wrinkled up and just look like they've been chewed :') it just throws off the whole vibe for me EDIT: also to add on I don't buy clothes that I know get wrinkled super easy, I hate that fabric
@tessarose8430Ай бұрын
ooh this is fun, please do more! i feel like the being overdressed thing is something i actually agree with. i'd rather look more put together than everyone around me than feel sloppier than every one around me. but you're so right, i see kids these days at the bus stop in straight up pjs and hoodies in 90 degree weather and it blows my mind. i get dressing comfy but i think i would feel depressed and unproductive in pjs every single day. just me though!

I would rather be overdressed than underdressed and about the bullying, that always happened to me ur it never bothered me. Sometimes it’s so funny, ole the other day I went to the pharmacy and the man checking me out was like “what’s with the fun outfit?” I looked at my outfit which felt so normal to me and I said “this is just my style” and the pharmacist there has an “out there” style too and we exchanged a laugh and a knowing look. It was such a cute moment that I needed that day.

I agree with the comfortable fashion rule. Unfortunately this means I'll never be able to buy off the shoulder items unless they're for like a wedding but still... having to constantly fix your outfit during the day is so annoying I cannot deal with that like I will flip
@senatorviewmasterАй бұрын
if i can't cook or do the dishes in it, i can't wear it. this eliminates big floppy sleeves for me and also fancy fibers that need to be hand washed or dry cleaned, because i don't want to deal with a high maintenance item.

i have a few fashion/shopping rules! the first is that if an item doesn’t fill a hole in my wardrobe then i don’t need it. cute dress but i have a similar style? don’t need it. also, i will never buy a dress or skirt if it doesn’t have pockets. i usually bring a purse with me whenever i go but i prefer to have my phone in my pocket for easy access. im also a huge fan of mixing black and brown in an outfit. as well as mixing metals. i think it adds an interesting texture to the look when it’s not as cohesive. i also have weird proportions and prefer not to wear anything that isn’t visually interesting in some way. and i don’t like to wear anything that has a solid color or pattern from shoulder to foot because it makes me look even taller than i already am
@mistakenlymidwest2460Ай бұрын
I spend a lot more time in professional settings, and it would be hugely detrimental to show up too casual lol. But I had the same experience when I was in school with my classmates making fun of me when I dressed up or showed any personal style lol

Amen! Actually I love those satin padded hangers, so I buy them whenever I find any (thrifted). And I have wooden hangers for coats and jackets. But apart from that, it's only felt hangers for me.

My fashion rule is that if im unsure of an item ill "sleep it over" and come back for it the next day if i still want it. In 90 percent of cases i realize i dont actually like or need the item that much and i dont bother going back for it (but i still have a few thrift store pieces that i regret not buying!!!).

A lot of my rules have evolved over time. The older I get, the more rules I have. I have a long list of things I will not wear and so many are things that have been trendy in recent years. They're fine for others, but not me. For example, I don't wear denim jackets, cowboy boots, ballet flats, animal print, etc--just to name a few. But my main rule is that I know what colors look good on me--so I don't wear unflattering colors next to my face.

actually my parents claimed dressing up or dressing well is a show of respect to whoever you are meeting or just wherever you are headed for the day, to show they ( even if just society) are worthy of your respect. They would be horrified if anyone greeted them at the airport in sweats 😂

Am I the only person who is extremely lazy when it comes to my bag? I have a lot of bags, but I don't change them out often! I'll carry the same bag for at least a month before I switch to another one. So this notion of your shoes either matching or not matching your bag takes up zero space in my head.

I disagree with the shoes from fashion brands thing!! Generally I definitely see where it's coming from and would normally think the same, but my loafers from Mango and boots from Pull&Bear I wear allll the time, are good quality and are comfy! Whereas my pair of Steve Madden heels are SO painfully uncomfy after I wore them to a wedding my feet were numb for days 🥲 So I think its just a discernment thing!
