Lake MacDonnell is an incredible place to visit. The lake is surrounded by natural beauty, which makes for a great day of hiking and exploring. Known for its pink colour, Lake MacDonnell is divided by a drivable track sometimes called “Watermelon Avenue”. As you will see from our drone footage of Lake MacDonnell in South Australia, it's really an untouched paradise. No filters or effects were used to enhance the colours of the footage.

Is that water pink? It looks beautiful. What causes the colour change in the water? Nice video

Thank you! Absolutely. It is naturally pink and really amazing to see in person. The colour is caused by high salt concentrations, as well as a special algae and bacteria that secretes a red pigment. We actually decided not to use any filters/effects to enhance the colours of the footage in order to ensure it was as natural as possible. That said, it is essential to visit Lake MacDonnell on a sunny day as pictures under low light/clouds can show very little red/pink colour 😊 .

Wow - so gorgeous! What are the drone restrictions if any there? We find it difficult to fly our drone many places here due to these types of guidelines.

Thank you very much! Luckily we can fly at many scenic locations as long as safety and other precautions/requirements are adhered to. That said, each state in Australia has its own restrictions, which often includes national/local parks (So there are many places we would love to fly but are not allowed to as well! 😊).

Great question! It is generally considered 'safe' to swim in the Pink Lakes, although they are extremely salty and it is often discouraged. Mostly people appreciate the natural beauty - as it is possible human swimming could threaten the unique ecosystem. :)
