The lake may have raised a few inches from the hurricane and this weekend's monsoon rains. The real source of water is from the Rocky Mountain snow melt. Rain is nice but won't make a huge difference.

Look for “Sin City Outdoors”. I believe it’s a father and son that do weekly updates on lake mead while they fish. The son usually does the narrative in the videos. If you want to know. The lake has risen tremendously with all the snow pack from this past winter. Just heads up.

Living in Vegas when I was younger, I can recall one year we had a weird weather system that dumped a lot of rain for a long while. Anyway, that was the only time I saw the desert green and lush. Including the surrounding moutains and hills. It was quite something to see.

All this rain is probly because of the climate change we all hear about ,and the result is as @dannyfrog said the desert blooms green ,acting as a carbon trap ,because that’s what plants need ,water and carbon ,just shows we don’t need to worry about it,nature takes care of all that excess carbon just fine.

A great video especially the side-by-side before and after pictures. Really wonderful to see how the water level has risen but we've got a long way to go. Seeing the abandoned Echo Bay Resort is really sad to see. I am 62 now but remember staying there with a group of friends on a ski trip in about 1980. About eight cases of Bud talls, a 5 pound can of Rosarita refried beans, a bunch of tortillas, and a big bag of cheese. oh, and we crammed about eight guys in one room. Young and dumb but so much fun!

This is what I found from an article in 2022. "Echo Bay Hotel (actually formally known as Echo Bay Motel) was a small resort on Lake Mead that closed its doors in 2010 thanks to a rapidly receding water level greatly affecting tourism. As Lake Mead disappeared, so too did the recreation on the lake - as well as the infrastructure that once thrived there."@@ronwilken5219

During last years rains it was hilarious. Being an Oregonian rain isn't feared. Me and my buddy casually walked around the linq promenade or whatever it is next to it it and got a full pizza from the pizza place there and took it to the beer bar across the street bringing food for anyone that wanted. Great time was had in the rain.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Lake is shaped like a funnel or a martini glass. You will get a lot of change for a little rain right now. But as the water level increases, you will see slower results. But another factor is that runoff from Las Vegas will never come close to the runoff from the snowy mountains in Colorado. Any increase from now until the end of the year is gravy.

Sounds like you confirmed the LV rain was only .55 inches (and were also surprised by it). How could that little rain cause so much accumulation? Is it because the city is totally cemented over w no place for absorption? Thanks for interesting post

The soil in Las Vegas does not absorb water. The rain just bounces off the dirt.

The desert flooding is amazing. The sun baked ground doesn't absorb water quickly so it all just runs off to the low land. During the 2014 flooding in Maricopa County AZ, my zip code got 6.25" in a 24 hour period. That was a lot of water.

Weather is CYCLICAL. These floods were an annual event when I first moved to Vegas, it's why you see million of dollars spent on man made "wash basins" around Southern LV, that collect rain runoff. We are in a drought cycle that is hopefully coming to an end. The record amount of snowfall in Utah/Colorado last winter, is a great sign that things might be changing and hopefully lake Mead, Lake Powell, et. al., fills back up to full capacity.

When the water levels are that low, the Bureau of land management should be getting rid of all those old boats and motors. They can be very dangerous when the water levels rise.

That doesn’t look like half an inch of rain, that looks more like several inches of rain. My guess is that the rain gauge that was used was in an area that got much less rain.

It’s weird to see that 0.5 inches of rain can cause so much flooding there. Where I live in south Louisiana we regularly get 1+ inch storms but we don’t get any flooding.

@telordesuvage3072 SAME in northeast. The bushes & grass & trees absorb the water & hold it. But in the desert vegetation doesn’t exist to do that. So the water just flows like a river

I just checked, the lake is 0.00 change since this time yesterday. However, the lake is up about 18 inches from about 10 days ago. And from January 1st, it's up about 22ft. That's about 528 billion gallons of water. Fortunately, we're headed into cooler weather (less evaporation)and hopefully a productive wet winter.

This happened about 10 years ago, too. We had a couple of really light winters in a row, the news were all lamenting about the level of Lake Powell, and the tree-huggers at my work were saying that it will never return to a normal level. One hard winter later and levels were right back up.

Typhoons and Hurricanes have all the same wind speed categories, the only difference is Location, Typhoons are in the Pacific Ocean and Hurricanes are in the Atlantic Ocean. So, Hillary was a Typhoon. From a 30+years retired US Navy Veteran.
@christopherfortineux6937
@christopherfortineux6937 Жыл бұрын
It has to be West of the international timezone to be considered a typhoon. There is a reason for this. Anything heading towards the East is a Hurricane. Anything to the West is a Typhoon. The winds that cause Typhoons are seperate. Typhoons are more common because the wind is not coming from Africa. But central and south america. The winds from Africa Turn north when approaching and meeting the Americas. The air coming from Central and South America are West to North West. The cause of typhoons can never make a typhoon hit America.
