Good design. You could make it really good by feeding the water that comes out into a large 'bog filter' area that consumes the nutrients. This would be an area that bubbles the water up through gravel to wetland plants and lets it gradually work its way back into the lake. That would be a really exciting combination. You could drive the pump with solar panels and windmill. Then take the excess algae skimmed off away from the area for feed or dry and burn it. 👍

Good solution my friend! I had a terrible water meal problem on my pond a few years ago and it actually made a fish kill from lack of oxygen. Lost most of my fish😢 I made a similar skimmer from a 3inch trash pump, but it was so powerful i had to hold it underwater or it would suck itself dry...worked really well though. However after fighting the watermeal this way for 2 years i realized i was being reactive to the real problem of why the watermeal was coming in the first. So, last year i got a pond water test kit and started taking readings of the water. I found my pond was high in phosphates, so i started treating with a phosphate eliminator and muck tablets. I also added an areator system. Now, this year i have some watermeal, but considerably less and much easier to manage. You got to fix your water issue or you will be sucking out watermeal forever. I definitely feel your pain, it was a nightmare for me! Best of luck!

I love this concept. I had pretty much the same idea and found your video through searching for clearing duck week on a lake. I've just bought a property with a 1 acre fishing lake. I have virtually zero DIY skills but want to make something like this powered by 2 or 3 solar panels.

My project is now underway. Pipework and gasoline 750litre per minute dirty water pump now purchased. Can't help thinking I might completely rethink with a new design on the basis that it duckweed floats. With this in mind, a catch tank with an output at the bottom back into the lake might do the same thing but without the need for finer gauge filters.

A round collector would improve the vortex effect ( think tornado cone ) also some battery powered 12v system charged by solar perhaps. Next job ... Upscale ? Looking good

Here it is, Spring of 2020, I have the watermeal/duckweed problem, last 3 years. I have a system similar to yours, but trying to find that perfect filter system. where can we find the "wire" you use for the filter?

It's very unique wire that is used in the papermill industry....I would think that Aluminum window screen would be very similar....Thanks for subscribing to my channel....

I have a pond in south central Florida that is getting the same film on top and I found your vid while searching for a solution. Yours looks like a great way to go. What kind of pump handles that water without clogging up? I would only recommend a larger catch skimmer to handle the volume.
