Great video of such special fish in a beautiful area, and I challenge you to a quicker release of these fish. Personally I unhook them, then briefly show them to the camera, and right into the water. We can all do better in handling these fish. Speed is important.

if you were spinning for brown trout would you use mono or flouro

Probably braid with a flouro leader depending if it was on a lake or river.

Some of those look like lake trout though. They didn't have the red spots with the purple halo around them and the worm like pattern on their backs. Are the coaster brook trout generally more plain looking than the ones youd catch in smaller lakes and rivers?

They look like normal spring brook trout to me, nothing like lakers at all.

Is it possible to find coasters anywhere on the MN north shore. Are they ever around Duluth?

Im sure there are a few around Duluth, but they would be hard to catch as Duluth lacks the structure one needs to effectively fish for them.

I do not personally study these fish yet (though I would like to) but I know scientists that do and I am aware of many of the issues that plague these fish. With that in mind, a couple of things: 1.) I do appreciate that you guys threw every fish back and did try to take care of them but there are seriously not very many coasters left and these populations are struggling (especially the southern coast populations) for a multitude of reasons- invasive salmonids, hybrid splake, and overfishing among them. 2.) If more fishermen start to want to catch these fish maybe less invasive salmonids would be planted (especially hybrid splake) HOWEVER their populations are critically low, some areas have strong populations, but it wont take much to change that. They can be fished for but for the sake of the ecotype people really shouldn't. Many of these populations are already below bottleneck thresholds and current regulations ARE helping, but there needs to be more. If the ecotype was considered a species they would be endangered. 3.) Splake and coasters can be REALLY hard to tell apart even with a trained eye (splake can exhibit multiple different phenotypes, I was trying to see if those were coasters- may have been lucustrine?). If you are catching a splake, 100% keep it and kill it. Splake are not completely infertile and populations are stocked in abhorrent amounts. They can then hybridize with coasters, lowering the populations' fitness and damaging their genetic biodiversity. Invasive salmonids in general are harming the ability for coasters to compete, making it more difficult for the ecotype to make a comeback. Some of these northern populations are doing better- but they really need to limit fishing them until these populations can more honestly compete. Please do not fish for them, and if you catch them for the love of god let them go.

They do limit fishing them, even if you wanted to keep them you're only allowed to keep 1 and it has to be over 22 inches(near the end of its lifecycle)
