We just fished this technique with Seth two days ago, and everything he says we did. Not only do they work exceptionally well, but on some incredible fish! The waters are as described, the behaviors of a hooked fish are spot on, and the gear, flies, and playing techniques helped us land some of the largest browns we've ever caught.

@@darkwaters5217 i use a 7.5' 3wt and a size 14 egg whenthe water gets skinny. If as long as you can keep the hook in em you can stear em to the net. 😉

Level taper is completely useless when you can just get a tapered euro line that does the same and adds to accuracy and the capability to throw dries/soft hackles. Level taper should never be recommended. Just try a dry or soft hackle on your nymph rod with a tapered euro nymph line. You can bomb it out there and mend like no other, or very accurately cast close quarters if a hatch pops up. You’ll never use level taper again.

Thank for the comment Jay. We use tapered lines all the time for other styles of fishing, but in this application it does nothing other than hinder catching fish. We’ve been dialing in this method for years now and it puts a lot of large fish in the net, consistently.

@@darkwaters5217 I’ll take your word for it. If numbers and efficiency are your goal, and actual fly line is a hindrance, why not just use a spin or float rod? Kind of a stretch as far as fly fishing goes. Great catches though!

You should do a google search for “euro nymphing or tight lining.” It’s a thing. Once you understand the premise, all your questions will be answered. 99% of fly rod and reel companies have all catered to this side of the industry. The level taper lines allow for drag-free drift of nymphs and streamers in a way that is impossible to achieve with other presentations because it’s micromanaging variables that aren’t manageable with other lines. No one single element of fly fishing (rod, reel, or line) make it “fly fishing.” Each way of fishing has its strengths and weaknesses, this is also true with tight lining. Some people don’t like it because it’s different than traditional fly fishing. But I don’t think those people have as much fun as we do. 😉

Seth, just found your site. Of course, I subscribed. I live in Florida and have fished fresh and salt water from Terra Del Fuego South America, to Barrow Alaska. I tie my own flies and am considered a good fisherman. However, when I return to the U.P. and Munising, the place of my birth, I am a 12 year old kid with sensory overload and I've been skunked more than I care to admit. I'm 78 now. I mostly fish from a kayak. My best friend and fishing buddy is in his early 70's. We are pretty much running the clock out regarding adventures, but I would certainly love to have an exploratory fly fishing trip to top off our U.P. experiences. Please reply when you find it convenient. Congratulations on the UTube site. Keep teaching. Your sincerity comes through.

Hey Seth, Andy here from Germany🤗 I absolutely love this Video!! We emailed a couple days ago about a Trip to the UP in October 2024 with my Brother, and I can’t wait to get there and finally meet you. I‘ve been Fishing that set-up for years here in Germany in a small stream that I often go too. I Fish a Rod called Guideline Tactical Nymph, not sure if you have those Stateside? Danish Rod Company. It‘s a 10‘2ft 3wt, Super Sweet!! Excited to see what you think of it, you will see it in October!!🎣 I‘m pretty sure my Brother and I gave up the idea of floating at least for longer then a Day, due to the amount of logjams, not my idea of vacation!! We talked about getting with you for a day🎣 and then going from there. Very good video. There is a lot of crossover here with rigging for "nymphing" heavy streamers. Question: I still haven't bought a nymphing line. I started experimenting with nymphing heavy streamers with a straight mono rig, and now I'm using the back end of a traditional floating weight forward line as my main line before leader/tippet. So it's still a long section of level small diameter line, but I'm not sure how that compares to an actual nymphing specific line. Do you have any thoughts about that?

I’ve often considered this. I think you’d just have to compare the diameter of the wf running line to the diameter of a euro line and see if they are close.
