I thought about doing that, I live on a lake. But I did start my tanks with the water from the lake. It has been a great help with starting my tanks.

I am jealous! It is kind of neat to just see what you end up with. Even to keep a small tank outdoors in the summer so if you get any fly larvae they can emerge and go on their way. But it is so cool to see how much life there is in a little bit of water and detritus!
