Lake Toba Is Bloody Beautiful! 🇮🇩

Today we got ourselves some wheels and explored around Lake Toba - the world's biggest volcanic lake!
First we had a nice local Indonesian breakfast before checking out some batak villages where a kind local batak man invited us into his home.
We then drove around the beautiful Samosir Island checking out some of the most incredible viewpoints.
Then we headed back to Tuk Tuk village and on the way ate some super spicy local batak food before drinking some homemade palm wine to end the day.
I've only got one thing to say and that is Lake Toba is bloody beautiful 🇮🇩

Love it - your adventures look a lot like ours - constantly stopping for puppy cuddles, checking out churches, falling in love with the Batak houses, ogling buffalo and being blown away at the views. Two years on and we are still besotted with this place. Thank you for the reality check about different perceptions of what "can" and "can't" be eaten. Right with you on that! :)

I stayed in a traditional batak house when i was there. And the locals were carving + selling the most beautiful wood art pieces in front of their homes. I brought my mum a carved soup ladle that she loves.

I need to remind people that Lake Toba is almost three times the size of Singapore and the island of Samosir in the middle of the lake is bigger than Singapore. 35:26 it’s the andaliman or Batak pepper which imparts prickly sensation, just like Sichuan pepper. 41:34 because you’ve been to all the other places in Indonesia? 😅 Every part of Indonesia is different from each other. The country covers an area from London to Tehran, that’s a lot of cultures, with more than 300 ethnic groups. You’ve met two so far: Minangkabau and Batak. Good that you were able to make your way to North Sumatra to see how different the province is from West Sumatra. Please note that terms like horas ᯂᯬᯒᯘ᯲ and mauliate ᯔᯥᯞᯪᯀᯖᯩ are only used by ethnic Toba Batak, there are several dialects of other Batak sub-ethnics. They might not understand each other but all Batak subethnics are patrilineal and very patriarchal, the opposite of the Minangkabau who are matrilineal where women rule the roost. Add that to the mostly Christian Batak and the devout Muslim Minangkabau. Many foreigners misunderstand that Indonesian ethnic groups like Minangkabau or Batak are tribal people that can only be found in their villages. The truth is they can be found all over Indonesia in all walks of life. We’ve had Batak ministers since the birth of this nation and the in-laws of the current president are also Batak.

I spent a few days there in 1985 during an extended backpacking trip in Asia when I was just 20 years old. Had the time of my life in Lake Toba, arrived on a cargo ship from Java. Looking at this video, relieved to see the place doesn't look like it's been totally commercialized after all these years. Lovely place. Great vibe. I recall going to a church where the whole assembly sang in the most beautiful harmony. And then a couple of dogs started humping next to the alter, and the whole place busted out laughing. I would give anything to go back 40 years and hang out there again.

Bnyak rum4h tr4disional yg tdak t3rawat pdahal itu adalah asset b3sar bila diperbaiki dan ditata dengan baik. Mgkin krena itu juga pngunjung internsion4l tidak terlalu bnyak dtang. D4n klau dib4nding danau di erop4 jelas kalah dalam kebersih4an dan kerapian. Pdahal dstin4si supper prioritas itu h4rusnya dikasih dana yg bsar, kmana sja dana yg bsar itu.
