TheOtherWhiteBread0 Here in Michigan 5grand is a lot to spend on a dock. A lot of the docks are pre made modular sections that are removed every fall because otherwise they would be ripped apart and sent downstream when the ice breaks up or during spring flooding. This isn't Florida. Aluminum docks with wheels are popular on wixom. Easy in, easy out. Same with boat lifts.

@Donald Kasper that's not how dams work, the lake would be deeper, yes, but its normal level would be at the same spot the shallow version had, meaning - increase inflow would still make it run over the dam, they need to increase the bank height (and/or more flood area) if you want more capacity to handle more than usual inflow

@Preston Hanson All the money that should have been spent in America has been paid to Lockheed Martin etc and then offshored. Same in the UK, the roads are appalling, cheap patches on top of cheap patches - we welcome the water board digging anywhere as their's are the best patches. No, they warned Lee Mueller, the private owner of these dams, not "county officials". Mueller, has been warned about these dams for years, and actually wanted the lakefront property owners to pay for the near 100 grand repair(back in 2011, it was probably far more than that now since he neglected them for so long) to the dam, even though he owns them, and was making money hand over fist from them.

Most deeds probably read that the lot boundary runs to the lake's edge. So, all those lakefront lots have now tripled in size. A weird exception to such a setup is the boundary between Maryland & Virginia, along the Potomac, where the Maryland boundary is the _Virginia_ shoreline. Yeah, that's mixing apples & oranges, but it's a neat fact.

Wixom Lake is a reservoir in the U.S. state of Michigan.[1] It is named after Frank Wixom, who was instrumental in building the Edenville Dam.[2] Unusually for its size, Wixom Lake boasts a lighthouse.[3] Since 2019, it has been owned by the Four Lakes Task Force,[4][5] a "county-delegated authority", under the State of Michigan.[6] Since 2018, the impoundment is regulated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).[7] The lake typically has a surface area of 1,980 acres (8.0 km2), a shoreline of more than 84 miles (135 km), a maximum capacity of 66,200 acre feet (81,700,000 m3), a normal capacity of 36,000 acre feet (44,000,000 m3),[8] and a maximum depth of 40 feet (12 m).[1] Normal Elevation, in feet, of Tittabawassee River reservoirs Lake Name Summer Winter Secord 750.8 747.8 Smallwood 704.8 701.8 Wixom 675.8 672.8 Sanford 630.8 627.8 Wixom Lake is the third in a series of four reservoirs along the Tittabawassee River. Each is controlled to a lower elevation during the winter flood control season and a higher elevation during the summer recreation season.[9] In May 2020, due to flooding on the Tittabawassee River, the Edenville Dam failed, releasing much of the water and requiring evacuations downstream. Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency.[10]

@Syclone0044
@Syclone0044 4 жыл бұрын
This exact thing happened to Lake Delton in Wisconsin Dells around 2008. The dam failed and the entire man made lake drained into the river. It was a lot more spectacular than this, I remember 4 big houses collapsing and being sucked into the raging waters on video I’m sure it’s here in KZbin. There’s a Wikipedia page specifically on the flood. A few years later it’s all back as it was, and now there’s a nice historical plaque at the spot where it failed. It wasn’t as big a deal as people here are making it seem.

@WashingtonHoax

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel ignored growing concerns about the dam’s ability to withstand heavy rain and focused instead on environmental conservation. Just three weeks before the flood, AG Dana Nessel sued the owner of the dam, Boyce Hydro Power LLC, alleging it illegally killed thousands of freshwater mussels by lowering water levels. As a result of pressure from the Michigan AG to keep water levels high, and inaction on safety concerns, the dam did not have an adequate spillway capacity and collapsed. Days after feds revoked the dam’s license to generate power, the State (Fascists Whitmer regime under Nessel) assumed oversight, inspected the dam and declared it and its spillways to be in “fair structural condition" and not lower the water by 8 feet.

I was at my lakehouse following this story over the weekend. Heartbreaking stuff man. As I was reading on my dock , the lake level was 27 1/2 ft above normal pool. (Norfolk lake, north central Arkansas) For as strict as the Core of Engineers are you'd think things like this should be at the top of the priority list.

Who owns that dam? The reason I ask is I live in Maine on a lake that’s part of chain of lakes (14 lakes all connected) in West Grand Lake there is a dam that is owned by China. In years past the dam is monitored so water levels are maintained correctly. Last 2 years we’ve been told that they don’t have the resources to maintain the dam any longer & are thinking of just leaving the dam open, which would literally drain all those lakes. All the people who have lake front property will be screwed.
