Looking forward to following along. Great subject matter and well presented. Hopefully newer divers will understand the importance of knowing versus assuming. Very important to understand ppo and ppn when doing several dives a day and how it relates to saturation

Okay okay not that I particularly need to know but I know somebody is bound to ask what happens if you have a dual tank configuration bonded with a manifold and you are partial pressure feeling the tanks to 02 clean standards lol... Do you calculate total volume in PSI for both cylinders or isolate them and calculate them individually

Great question!!! So I get asked this question every time I teach a Gas Blender Course or even a normal Nitrox course. In short, with doubles we consider them as one cylinder instead of 2 during the filling process. Manifolded cylinders are much easier to calculate and fill as one, instead of two. For the obvious reasons, it would take too much effort to try to fill them separately, and at the same time, guarantee that they both had the exact same blend. If they were off, even by 1%, as soon as the manifold was open, the two cylinders would mix, causing the blend to be off. As far as the total volume (2 steel 100's totaling 200 cubic feet or a manifolded system still being considered 100 cubic feet) the math is done with the assumption that the 2 cylinders are only 1 cylinder, and considering the fact that a gauge would only read the maximum of 3442 psi and not 6884 psi (or the maximum you filled the cylinders too), we would consider them once again as 1 cylinder during the calculation process. The biggest hiccup that comes with partial pressure blending cylinders, as far as doubles goes, is when the cylinders begin to cool, and a diver is diving un-manifolded singles in a sidemount configuration. The biggest concern to the fill operator is to make sure both cylinders are identical. Even with single cylinders (un-manifolded) in sidemount, systems like the UTD Z-System institutes a manifold back into the system, thus if the cylinders were not filled identically, the desired blend could change, once manifolded together.

Presented well, Bryan, as usual. I assume in the next video you will explain "why" it is important to know that if I have a 3000# cylinder with 32% nitrox that equates to 960# of oxygen. As I watched I kept asking myself, "yea, but why would I care?"

You would correct, in the next couple of videos, we will be using these calculations to help in the partial pressure blending process. We decided to break the videos up into smaller sessions, to help others grasp the concept. Stay tuned.

Why would you need to know partial pressure? What applications would you use different gasses and partial pressure

There are many reasons, whether we are concerned with Oxygen Toxicity, Nitrogen Narcosis, calculation our Maximum Operating Depth, or even blending a specific mixture via partial pressure blending.
